My girlfriend and I were on our way to one of the other bars on Gloucester road, but couldn't walk passed Bootleger as it looked and sounded really cool from outside. The open front, tables on the street and electro-swing music were a perfect combo to draw us in. It is pretty unbelievable what they've done with the place. From being a pretty terrible club that was mainly used for birthday and drum and bass parties - it is unrecognisable and really cool! It is a really narrow space but every inch has been used really well. The staff were really friendly and you could tell try we're pretty excited to be working in the new bar on such an infamous party street! The draught options are pretty basic but good enough. They have a couple of really nice pale ales that they were happy to let me 'try before I buy'. We shared a Mac n cheese which was good. I'd say a little more seasoning was needed; it way lacking a little umph! But we demolished it in seconds! I'm really interested to try the rest of the menu coz it sounded great, if not a little familiar. Bristol seems to a breeding ground for pulled pork and American style dining/menus at the moment! All in all a great place and an incredible turn around from its former self. They should be proud and I can see them doing it well. It was busy enough when we were there, so it looks promising!

Fields, woods, a river and streams surround the pub, which has its own gardens and terrace seating, where you can eat and drink al fresco. The pub is Family-run and the main personality is the landlady, Sue, whose enthusiasm and high service ethic has rubbed off on all her young staff. A good menu offers local produce, supplemented by 3 or 4 daily specials; chef will endeavour to cook your special requirements where possible. There is a sensibly-priced wine list with many wines available by the glass. An altogether most agreeable and recommended destination.

The Sportsman pub in Peterston, is a lovely pretty little pub bin an idyllic country village (the drive down really is beautiful). Even better (in my opinion) is that's rather upmarket, so you never have to worry about it getting rowdy, plus kids are most welcome. They also serve some really nice food; the main courses cost between £8-10 and a lot of care is put into preparing the food (unlike many pubs). I'd highly recommend this place!

There's good reason for this: it's because it's that place next to the Fleece and Firkin. It's at its busiest when there's a gig next door, as people nip in for a pre-gig pint (my mate once saw Rik Witter playing pool in here; I'd just like to make it clear that I wasn't there and that I'd never pay to watch Shed 7). They also do free gigs of their own of the predominately acoustic nature on Sunday afternoons, sometimes with cheap beer offers thrown in. An old man's pub, the place itself is a little olde worlde with ales on tap, an aging clientele and a pool table around the back. Speed of service was passable - got my first drink promptly but for my second the barman was having a mare finding glasses and for a short period was then the only one serving both ends of the bar. However, that was probably a one-off, and both he and his barmaid were very friendly and welcoming. I was there on a Friday evening, but the clientele are civil enough; pretty much local working class, but no boneheads or intimidating glances etc. The layout inside is fairly compact, which some may find a little too close and restrictive for their liking. However, outdoor seating is provided at the front, as well as a roofed outdoor area with benches at the back. There's also a small beer garden further behind that. A weekly quiz night adds to the laid-back ambience. All in all, this is a good pub if you want a quiet drink and a chat in a relaxed setting! 7 out of 10
