Just been out to the Red Lion in Pendoylan. Live locally and thought we'd try the newly refurbished 'gastro pub'. Bit disappointed. Looking at an average price of £5 for a starter, £14 for a main. Add in dessert and drinks and it's a £30 per head gig. Therefore, the expectation is of good quality food and service.
Waiting staff were pleasant enough. Canadian general manager was polite enough. The other fella was a little dim, unprofessional and quite frankly annoying. I had the Red Lion's Cawl with braised lamb faggot, roasted baby onions & minted jelly. Cawl is the national dish of Wales. Welsh Cawl is a stew and made from bacon, Welsh lamb or beef, cabbage and leeks. What I was actually served was lamb meatballs (3 of the sizeof an average strawberry) with 6 small onions and no mint jelly. Some form of jus was provided in a jug.
I explained that I hadn't ordered meatballs / faggots but Cawl and I was told that this was the Chef's take / interpretation of Cawl. Bollocks!
I was then served with a very average rib-eye. Chips were fab.
Nice place for a pint but don't waste your money in the restaurant you'll be disappointed if you have the same experience as I did. read more
