Awesome food. Would have got 5 stars if the waiter had smiled. Just saying.

The quiet midweek evening meant service was very speedy and I had a menu in my hand before I'd even had chance to wipe the drool from my chops. And what a menu it was, with starters ranging from pates and soups to fried mushrooms and whitebait, accompanying mouthwatering mains that would leave Gordon Ramsay's cookbook looking like a hobo's diet plan. For my starter, I chose the lemon prawn bruschetta and when the first mouthful hit my tongue, it released a taste so satisfying it could make the Antichrist praise the lord. Pan seared with garlic and chili, the prawns were a taste sensation and the chili gave it a distinct kick in the aftertaste for good measure. Served with a modest side salad, this starter got an immediate thumbs up of approval from the spotless state of my plate. For main, I put my love of steak to one side in favour of the pork cacciatore, which was absolutely gorgeous. Two slices of lean pork topped with a tomato and basil sauce was exactly what the doctor ordered, and I would happily OD on that prescription any day. The only downside of the whole experience was that the first two courses were so delicious that, by the time I saw the dessert menu, I was fit to burst. But after such a triumphant first impression, there will definitely be another opportunity to sample that.

La Calabria is probably the best restaurant I've been to since arriving in the United Kingdom…read more Nestled in the countryside of central Wales, La Calabria is one of those places you don't expect to find after having had so many fair-to-midland meals. This place prides itself on serving Calabrian cuisine, which the restaurant describes as "... primarily a diet of simple fresh pastas, homegrown vegetables cooked in a myriad of ways, and meats, particularly pork." Pasta, though important to all regions of Italy, in Calabria it is "... treated with an almost reverence." If I had read this about the restaurant prior to going there, I would definitely have had a pasta dish. But I didn't, and chose one of their house specialties instead, Pollo Marsala. Ironically, none of the restaurant's specialties includes pasta. The Marsala was like none I've had in the past, and it was excellent. The chicken wasn't overwhelmed by the Marsala. Overall it was a simple meal served with roasted potatoes and green beans. On this occasion I broke down and had their dessert, trying their homemade ice cream. One scoop of hazelnut and one scoop of Nutella, which may seem redundant to the hazelnut, but there truly is a distinctive difference just like true hazelnut and Nutella. Also, I sampled the Fruits of the World, a berry ice cream. Great care is taken in presenting the meal and making each patron feel welcome. If you arrive early, they invite you to sit down in the front bar area, where you can order drink, look over the menu, order your meal and get to know those sitting next to you. Once your table is ready, your waitress escorts you to your table. I have to admit that my first choice for that night's meal was at the Daffodil Inn, which is down the road in Penrhiwllan, but they didn't have any available tables for the night. In the end, it didn't matter, because La Calabria was excellent and truly exceeded all of my expectations in every way. It is highly recommended to call La Calabria for reservations at least the morning of your dinner plans.
