They have some of the best sweet pastries I've ever had! - First of all, their chocolate chip toffee cookie is among the best I've had in the city. - I also love their strawberry shortcake bar. It was decadent, had great texture and great strawberry flavor. - Their midnight banana bread was also delicious, with a subtle banana flavor coming through and pairing very nicely with the rich chocolate flavor. - The corn Oreo was a very interesting rendition of the classic treat and honestly worked pretty well. When I went, there was no line since they had just opened and the service moved efficiently through their small store. I've been following Red Gate Bakery for a while now, hoping to try one of their weekly rotating selection of cinnamon rolls. I went for the first time today, but since I was planning on walking home before trying the pastries (there is no seating at the bakery), and since it was a fairly warm day, I thought it might melt by the time I got home, so I ended up getting some smaller, more compact treats. Brown Butter Blondie: Personally, I didn't need the walnuts, but the texture and flavor of this were excellent -- it's gooey and chewy and tastes of rich brown butter / butterscotch. Choco-toffee cookies: This cookie sits squarely at the top of some NYC chocolate chip cookie rankings, so the expectations were high. I thought it was very good, but it doesn't quite top my personal list. The best parts are the crunchy exterior, which has a slightly over-baked, crisp flavor, along with the light dusting of salt flakes on top. The middle is more doughy but mostly consists of medium-dark chocolate chunks. I didn't really taste the toffee, which was too bad, because I love toffee. Malty lime bar: A key lime pie in bar form, this is a next-level pastry. The lime 'custard' is thick and creamy, and perfectly tart, with just enough sweetness to add balance. The graham cracker crust is buttery and lightly salty, and the sugary zest sprinkled on top makes it pretty and grounds the flavor a bit. Finally came in for a breakfast treat on my birthday! I've tried to come here many times, but have found them closed but had luck on a weekday morning (not sure if hours change around a lot or maybe I'm bad at planning?) The cinnamon bun is unbeatable. Soft and fresh and brown buttery and decadent. Correct frosting to bun ratio. Even better the next day after a few seconds in the microwave. I also tried the regular oreo, which was incredible, I want to try there other flavors (I think I saw a matcha oreo). There was an incredible variety of desserts in the case and the staff was very kind and it was cool to see all the baking going on right there behind the counter. I've had a few cinnamon rolls across town lately and this place ranks near the very top. The flavors change so look at their IG page before hand. The first and best bun I've had from here was a rhubarb custard cinnamon bun. The flavors change was unique and that alone made it stand out. It wasn't too sweet. Only note was it could have been a little more moist. But I've since come back and had other flavors that were also good. There isn't really room to sit or even stand around to take it to go or to a park near by. The service is fast and there is never a line. I was excited to try a bakery I haven't been to. On my way back home I made a stop at Red Gate. There was no wait and lots of options were available. The cookies looked a little dry to me so I opted for a rich and moist cake loaf. Two flavors - chocolate banana bread and pumpkin olive oil loaf. I tried the pumpkin first and it was insanely sweet. Ordered a cake for my birthday but they did not make it right. It was definitely a chocolate cake but you can even tell just by looking at it that the real one looks pretty sad compared to the website image. Back again! I had been thinking about the brown butter blondies since the last time I had come in and was really craving it. These truly were a dream. The nutty flavor from the brown butter paired with the pecans and brown sugar was truly to die for. It was easy to order ahead and schedule a delivery window - the goods showed up right in time and they were all packaged nicely. I tried each of the 4 bars currently offered. The brown butter bar was my favorite of the 4. The Pickled PBJ tasted like a PBJ sandwich - it was really good. The chocolate caramel brownie was too rich for my taste. Their cookies are thin but big. All of the flavors were a big hit except the bagel cookie which was hit & miss with our group - some people really liked it where as others were appalled. One of my all time favorite bakeries in NYC! I have tried most of their treats and you really can't go wrong with anything from here. Their treats range from classic to creative and are always executed to the highest degree. If I had to pick favorites though, I'd say the midnight banana bread, malted lime bar and caramel brownie. I recently worked with them on a custom birthday cake and the whole process was so easy and seamless. Greg was a pleasure to work with and really took my favorite flavors and ran with them. Together we decided on a brown butter banana cake, with salted caramel filling, cream cheese frosting and covered in cinnamon and sugar. It was oh so tasty! They also do a special cake flavor by the slice as well as a specialty cinnamon roll on the weekend. It's hard to resist going once I see the flavor - every week is better than the last. The chocolate they use is very good, not too sweet and not too bitter. I have not tried the layer cakes but they look incredible. I have tried the cinnamon roll, and also excellent. I finally stopped by right as they were opening on a Saturday morning specifically to try their weekend special bun, the Persian love bun. Pricey at $9.50 pre-tax, it is a hefty and extraordinarily decadent creation. I don't know why I was being conservative and giving these guys a 4 stars when I first reviewed RedGate because this spot is one of my favorite bakeries in New York and therefore with how often I've frequented them over the years and religiously kept up with their cinnamon bun and cakes of the day, they deserve a damn five stars! Buns are always so flavorful from the dough, the toppings and fillings, and freshly made every time, so pillowy and soft. I adore adore their creativity with flavor combos and that's precisely why it's a 5 for me. But guys I get such intense FOMO so please bring back flavors because I still think about the caramel coffee bun that I never got to try and it's been probably over a year maybe even two since that had been launched LOL. read more

This small, cute bakery in the East Village is a fun stop for a sweet treat but could use some improvement. The choco-toffee cookie was nicely chewy and not too sweet, but it could've used a bit more chocolate. The cannibal cookie was fun and also had the perfect amount of sweetness. I'd tried the everything bagel cookie in the past and found the flavor combo a bit too strange for me. What was disappointing recently was the blueberry lemon poppyseed loaf slice. It's loaded with blueberries and poppyseeds and has decent flavor but the texture was super dense and seemed underbaked (maybe because of too many blueberries?) so that it didn't really have a good crumb. Maybe I got a bad batch but I wouldn't recommend that loaf. I wouldn't go out of my way for this spot but their cakes do sound pretty interesting and that malty lime bar sounds good! read more
