It's nice to know that it is still doing the quality meals it has always been known for as I haven't been for a couple of years now. This pub was originally a stop for us as it has a decent carpark and is difficult to miss on your way through Tarporley. It was a lucky find, as, at the time, it was one of the few friendly pubs in the area (to students that is!). I would recommend the Rising Sun to anybody, without reservation, but - they need to improve the choice of real ales a little.

Think country inn food and you're not far off, with all sorts of pub classics like steak and kidney pudding (which my wife had and was amazing), fish and chips and more. I went for the steakburger which was tasty but that was at the 2nd attempt - the first one that they brought out was stone cold (I'd asked for it medium but this looked like it had come straight out of the fridge and onto the plate. Thankfully the manager was very good and replaced it straightaway, giving us a couple of free soft drinks as an apology. Personally - I don't think this 2nd burger was cooked massively well (but I couldn't be arsed saying anything 2nd time around) and the chef could do with maybe hitting somewhere like Manchester's Filthy Cow burger joint to see how to cook it well but juicy and the pink in the middle... Besides the burger situ and my wife and myself having to eat our meals separately I'm still giving this place a 4 star as it was a great menu, surroundings and has friendly staff.

We didn't book a table and lucky to get a table as all the empty tables we saw when we walked in were all reserved. They sat us on a table for 6 which was free. Its a nice interior to the building, sort of Northern Quarter (Manchester) in feel with the vintage (I think called Edison) lightbulbs. The menu is split into different sections of: Little bits Little plates Little sides Little lunch We ordered from the Little bits and Little plates section and they were fairly similar in size. We had the Artisan bread and the Crispy Squid from the Little bits section. From the Little Plates we got the: Chicken kiev Tempura cod cheeks Lamb rump Crispy Belly Pork - we ordered 2 of these and good job! All the dishes were really good. Some delicious. In particular the cod cheeks and belly pork. The lamb was tasty and tender. The only thing which was not at least really good was the chicken kiev - it was OK, just not really good. The ham was good, but there wasn't much of it. The cheese was pretty standard mild supermarket fayre, and the salad wasn't up to much either. Robinsons is on tap, but again my first pint of bitter in about 4 weeks was a touch on the ropey side. Worth a look, but don't order the ploughmans. I should have had the gammon.

The menu gives the impression that they raided the local grocery store and put it all on the menu. When asking about the day's dessert options, you'll be overloaded with about 15 different cakes and then ice cream, of which they only carry Vanilla, Chocolate and Strawberry. No idea whether it could be local, such as from Cheshire Farms, or just some generic brand. I have been here on two occasions, both were beautiful days and a great chance to sit outdoors along the canal. However I have been underwhelmed by the service. If this place made an effort (landscaping, service and food-wise), they could be an excellent place for lunch or dinner, or even a drink.
