The exterior and some of the interior is a little faded and shabby, but that could be said to add to its olde worlde charm (if we are kind, and the staff were so friendly that I'm feeling kind). The Full Monty: 2 eggs, bacon, 2 Cumberland sausages, 2 big slices of black pudding (prize Bury black pudding!), mushrooms, stewed tomatoes, and baked beans, with a side of toast. The perfect meal to help you recover from the hangover from drinking all their real ales. It was delicious and very filling. (Unfortunately my phone died just as I was about to snap a shot of this formidable meal.) It's a big space with darts and a pool table. Plus they have live music, usually blues or rock, on Friday and Saturday night, starting around 9. Back in the day, I went to some rollicking gigs here and I'm glad to see they're still going strong. Tables and glasses were dirty, and the whole place smells like urine, but I wasn't going to complain. However, the poor and rude service was the tipping point - being humiliated for not knowing about the 'Sam Smiths' brand and being ridiculed and spoken to like a naughty child by a rather large lady behind the bar. It baffles me why some people think they can behave like this AND ask people to pay for the pleasure! Avoid.

You can feel the history in the bones of the building, which has kept a lot of the old wood and stained glass to give it a traditional pub feel. There's also a lot of early 19th century photos to remind you of its place in the heart of old Altrincham. Another throwback feature is that it's a brewery pub not a free house. So the only draught beer is the cheap but excellent Sam Smiths range. No music in the background, no TVs, and all the better for it.

Nowadays being the wrong side of the busy Chester Road means that it doesn't get as much casual traffic as most pubs in central Altrincham. Good selection of draught beer and other booze. Food menu focuses on burgers with a few other standard pub options like shepherds pie and fish n chips. I've enjoyed meals here in the past but today (Friday lunchtime) the kitchen was closed due to lack of staff. I'd probably give it 5 stars for character and friendliness (and nostalgia, since it was my dad's local for decades) and 4 stars for food if it's still as good as I remember. But, no food means a 4 star rating overall with the benefit of some doubt. It's a centuries old building with several small snug rooms with low-beamed ceilings. Firstly, nobody batted and eyelid that I wandered in decked out in a cycling jersey and shorts - so either they're used to cyclists stopping in for a drink, or they had the good decency to take the piss once I'd gone outside again. The pub itself is quite small, but there's a decent amount of seating inside and there's a reasonable range of beer including a few hand-pull pumps - though I couldn't tell you what was on at the time. The staff were very friendly, the prices were reasonable, and I'd quite happily call in again regardless of whether I was on two wheels at the time. Well worth calling in if you're out that way.

I didn't get to try the food or even see the menu but there's an impressive looking kitchen so hope to return for that at some point (actually have now found menu online and as well as a grill they have a big sushi menu!!) Drinks wise, they had Antica Formula vermouth! The bartender had NO IDEA what it was or how to serve it but we quickly got the ice/lemon/appropriate glass sorted and although it might seem expensive at £4.50 for 50ml it's a good alternative to wine for an aperitif. Prosecco was £22 a bottle which wasn't bad either. I thought the ale selection was a little limited although and I couldn't work out what the microbrewery aspect was (curiously they only seem to have a wine menu even though they have an extensive amount of fancy sprits which you can't see properly). As the evening (Saturday) wore on it became increasingly busy and uncomfortable to sit at the bar with people bashing past you to get their order - they probably need to move some of those chairs on busy nights (/you might want to try another option - amazingly the market was actually quieter by that point!).
