I called at Masons Restaurant Bar to take advantage of the Eat Out To Help Out offer, located on the Ground Floor of the stunning Manchester Hall on Bridge Street, it offers a high-end dining experience in the Spinningfields area of the city centre.
The first thing which stood out to me at Mason's is the service, the staff were fantastic and I've never seen staff more well-prepared ahead of one of my visits, they had the lift ready to use which can often take a few minutes to set up, it's an impressive lift which involves the staircase forming a flat service - very cool! They also had the gluten-free menu ready for me with handwritten notes on what I could and couldn't eat, the selection was also really impressive as there was only one main course which I couldn't eat.
I was disappointed to find out the Fish and Chips was a sea-bream unbattered, rather than the traditional British fish and chips. I would have loved to have ordered the gnocchi, however, it is unique as it is made with sweet potato which I don't like, they do try to add a fancy twist onto most dishes, which I totally understand many people would enjoy but it made me want to consider another dish. I decided to opt for the guinea fowl, I wasn't too keen or excited with it being served on a bed of peas, I'd much prefer a nice sauce and some chips, which I did ask for.
I was pleasantly surprised with the peas, they had some flavour with the little pieces of onion which were cooked perfectly, the meat was also pretty good, this is the first time in a long time I've had guinea fowl and I did enjoy it, the main part of the meat was cooked beautifully and had some nice flavours, I didn't enjoy the leg part as much but I never tend to like this part of any meat anyway, so I can't judge them too much for that.
The chips were crispy which I really liked, but they were far too sickly, the garlic and parsley were far too overpowering for me, I had to put on a lot of pepper to try and take the taste out and I just couldn't, it was a shame too as the chips were again cooked perfectly, crisp in every bite but I couldn't stomach more than a small number due to how overpowering the garlic and parsley was.
3* - Pretty good food and service, the atmosphere of the place was good even though I was one of two tables in at the time, the staff were well prepared and friendly and I would consider returning here even if it isn't my favourite place for fine-dining in the city. read more
