Red Cliff Picnic Area of the Montana Custer Gallatin National Forest.
Small picnic area by a riverside, with an outhouse.
Off the east side of US-191 Gallatin Road, about 6.5 miles south of Big Sky's MT-64 Lone Mountain Trail, we saw a little turnoff for a campground. Instead of continuing across the bridge at that turnoff, we immediately turned right into a small gravelly looped parking lot.
There, the Red Cliff Picnic Area has a few picnic tables, a babbling river, potable water, and an outhouse. The website says fishing and day-hiking. All the comforts of outdoor life:-) (We didnt see anyone fishing, and we saw no fish in the river, but we didn't look under the bridge.)
There are some stepping stones going a few yards out into the stream. We balanced dramatically, as if the slow shallow river (Jul 2026) was risky, which it wasnt at the time. We did manage to get one shoe quite wet. But only that. Oh, somehow our huckleberry candy created a blue spot on a nice beige shirt, so we rinsed that pretty thoroughly in the river.
A few days later there were several intense rainstorms. We saw other gentle blue streams turn brown and rough. I don't know if the water is always calm at this place
The Red Cliff Picnic Area is about halfway between Bozeman and West Yellowstone, at the turnoff for the Red Cliff Campground of the Custer Gallatin National Forest. The campground address shows as 41120 US-191, in Gallatin Gateway or the outskirts of Big Sky. It's at Lat-Lon 45.1739722222, -111.2428611111 or Lat-Lon 45°10'26.3"N, 111°14'34.3"W . read more
