Clean and organized with a wide selection of great genres of music. I enjoy listening to almost all music but I've been called an old soul since I was in my 20's. They have new and used in all sections ranging from $50 down to $4.00. Talk about something for every one. The staff were smiling when I complimented the store for not smelling like a musty basement. I love independent record shops. This place is more for vinyl afficionados, but there is a great selection of cassettes and CDs. I found a used CD at a great price from a blues artist I enjoy whose physical media is difficult to find, so I left the store happy. read more

Red Cat has done such a great job using their social media to showcase both their new and used records during the precautions and shutdowns. I have to confess. I mostly come into to this store just for fun. I have enough LPs at home that I don't need more. But...you'll never know. I might just have a craving after I hear that good old song on the radio (for the millennials​, that's a gadget in your car that plays tunes with DJs talking, and no, you cannot skip the commercials!). The staff is friendly and knowledgeable. The selection is just awesome, covering all the genres and decades. Most of them are in at least good condition if not better, unlike your thrift stores. I don't know much about records but this shop was recommended to me by someone who does. I liked that I wasn't bothered, there was plenty of staff who answered all the questions I did have but otherwise left me alone to browse. Music is so personal, and I really don't like when someone I'd breathing down your neck with advice (that was never asked for). Red cat is not huge but I found a lot of what I had come for and even so stuff I hadn't. This was my first record store experience and I will happily say it won't be my last as I may in fact have to aquire a turntable of my own. If you or someone you know is in the market for some great records and deals I highly suggest red cat, plus it's such a walkable and interesting neighborhood with loads to see and eat! I love Vinyl nerds. The proprietor of this music and DVD store is fully VERSED ;-} in all things music, then and now. Helpful and with well formed opinions about the music scene. I love the small music stores of Vancouver. Over priced, and pathetically thin "World" music sections... but where else are you going to find people to talk about the "Post Apocalyptic" music scene. When downloading music will be only a story you tell the children and you're making turntables out of copper wire and magnets. Yes. Damn -I have to take this call. Awesome shop if you're hunting for fresh wax. Oodles and oodles of it. No genres left out. I usually find the electronic/dance sections to be barren at non-specialty shops, but not here. Found a title I'd abandoned all hope of ever finding in the wild. The staff were really pleasant, giving recommendations on other shops to hit in the neighborhood and the city at large. Love this place. Fair pricing, amazing selection (in such a small space), and friendly/helpful staff. Everyone in the city seems to rave about Zulu but I find their vinyl selection overpriced and spotty, with the 'new releases' hardly new. After moving here and investigating some of my options, I was beginning to worry that I've have to schlep all the way to Audiopile (or Krazy Bob's in Langley) in order to find the selection, variety, and pricing I desired, but then I found Red Cat. I've never gone in here without walking out with at least eight new LPs, which isn't great for my bank account but satisfies my impeccable taste in music. ;) Staff are very friendly and helpful. I was in there today and a boy who couldn't have been older than 12 walked up to the counter and asked one of the guys working if they sold anything "heavy." The employee could've been condescending and dismissive, but he engaged the kid in an earnest conversation about what kind of "heavy" music he liked, then gave him a CD to listen to. Later, I heard the employee nicely talking with the kid about Metallica. The kid was loving it and you could tell that he felt about a hundred feet tall; everyone in the store was smiling to themselves listening to the conversation. That's nice! Red Cat occupies a couple of very specific niches in the record store ecosystem. In this age of itunes, pandora, and last.fm it's difficult for a thriving store not to cater to a niche or two. Firstly, this is the only record store I've ever seen with rockabilly and psychobilly separated out into a separate section. All your Carl Perkins, Reverend Horton Heat, Nekromatix, and Horror Pops all stacked next to each other in the back. Didn't see any rocket roll, though (for all of us, we should have a mission). They also highlight local artists. There's something of a wall of fame for their CDs and there's a bin of 7s strictly for locals. Second: vinyl. By my eye about half their stock is LPs. Mostly new, with a pretty nice, but smallish selection of used. (Who can compete with Zulu in that respect?) I was disappointed with the quantity of 7 and 10 inchers, but in browsing them I still found a few things I want. It's not just the media that's the focus here, though; this is the only spot in town where I've found adapters for 45s. They have cleaning kits for styluses and records too. Anything the record nerd wants to keep his equipment in top shape. Prices are a bit higher than I want to pay ($11 for a used Carl Perkins LP?), but Red Cat fills its niche very effectively. read more

What a cool place- I don't usually spend much time on this area of Main. But there's a lot of neat places, and this tops the list. This is the place to get sold-out tickets. You still need to act fast- but after trying Scratch and Zulu, this is the place that had the tickets I was looking for. I got their last three! They let me reserve them on the phone as long I paid at the same time. Picking up the tickets was incredibly quick and easy. I browsed around the store for a few minutes before heading back to the counter. They have an amazing selection of vinyl here. Very nice shop! read more

I LOVE Red Cat. I wouldn't say they are the absolute best, but they do a damn good job and the staff are always really nice (not pretentious). I like the layout of the new shop and think it is fabulous that they have managed to stay open in this world of iTunes. I swear I am the only one of my friends who actually still buys my music, and enjoys the feel of the CD in my hand. I know all the rage these days is vinyl once again, but I just don't have a player, so I'll stick to CDs. They also play in my car. I really like the staff recommended selection that is always changing. There's usually something there I want. However, at their prices, I have to refrain from splurging, because a few CDs will quickly add up to $50 or more. They are happy to reserve concert tickets if you call and pay over the phone. Their prices for tickets are usually pretty reasonable (lower service charges). I always feel a little awkward buying albums from the bands that the staffers belong to, but hey, it's good for them if I like their music. Now if only The Buttless Chaps hadn't retired. Buy those hard to find concert tickets here, as they will most likely have it. Call ahead to make sure they have availability, and you can also get them to hold them for you on the phone. Street parking right outside the store, pick up is quick and easy, and they also accept major credit cards. Very nice staff here too. read more

While visiting Vancouver I felt I had to get to Red Cat Records given the glowing reviews here that deem it a must visit. For those seeking out the store, I highly recommend driving or taking a bus to get there. The TransLink will require a lengthy walk from the King Edward stop, but if it's a nice day, go for it. Red Cat Records is a cozy store that manages to pack in a lot of CDs and vinyl given its space. As I tend to buy CDs, my review focuses on that experience there. Unfortunately, Red Cat does fall victim in some instances as a pricey CD store like most of the rest of Vancouver. I was aghast when I pulled out a used Pretenders "Best of" album for $19.99 when it only had one disc. Some double discs went upwards of $25 to $30, which was surprising since they weren't rare or on an out of print label. Overall, older and used CDs proved to be quite avoidable given their price. Thankfully there were two other sections of CDs worth looking at. There was the collection of new CDs that were going for $8 as a kind of sale, and looking through those unearthed a few good albums from the past year or so. The other section was $5 per disc. Thumbing through the selection proved that there were a couple of good bands worth checking out, including a Rodrigo y Gabriela album I was surprised to find as well as a few old punk compilations. Red Cat truly is a nice record store in Vancouver and is worth looking through, but be prepared to overspend on something interesting to you if you decide to drop by. read more

This is my favourite record shop in the city. The staff are super friendly and incredibly helpful. Unlike some of the other shops, where some of the used vinyl can be in 'iffy' shape, Red Cat always seems to have good, clean records on hand. Everything is sleeved (inner and outer!), reasonably priced, and well organized. They've also likely got the best selection of new vinyl in the city- it's the only place I've been able to consistently find the Numero comps I'm looking for. Red Cat carries a fantastic selection of unique records and cd's, along with some classic new and used options. Obviously, the staff is extremely knowledgable and helpful and they welcome a challenge in finding a track or album that you cannot find anywhere else. This is a great local record shop I'm happy to frequent. It's nostalgic and one of the few older era music shops that have disappeared all too quickly. This is where I often buy tickets for local concerts, mostly indie and alternative bands. You can get them for a few bucks cheaper than online. It's a fairly small shop, but if you're looking for vinyl records or concert tickets, I highly recommend this spot. Also, the staff is friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. I've been trying to avoid this store and have finally succumbed. As a lot of people, I find it really hard to walk into a record shop and not spend, and they make this really difficult. I love this record shop: excellent cheap deals (.99 bins), really fair prices on everything else used and new, amazingly nice staff with no pretense and really well organized. The BEST thing is they get many new releases before anyone else in town. They also give a little extra care which counts: used records are cleaned really well and include a thick inner sleeve along with an outer one. They pack a lot into the shop and have great tote bags for records or other stuff, cartridges, record cleaning tools, turntables, high quality inner sleeves, etc. Whatever I've needed, they've had tucked away somewhere in the shop. If they don't have the record you're looking for, they're speedy at finding out how to get it and how much it'll cost. Customer service is the best here. Plenty of great reviews for this great store. I want to focus on the selling and trading of vinyl records with Red Cat. In short they do it the right way and are very honest which is very difficult to find these days. The staff can be trusted to give fair value for your records. Also they typically only take records they can use and pay you for those rather than others stores that take all your records but still only pay for those they want and usually don't pay much. I find most record stores in Vancouver to be extremely overpriced except Red Cat and Audiopile on Commercial Dr. Great new selection at great prices AND they have great used stuff to boot. They will also order anything for you so if you don't have a credit card or can't get someone to order your shiz for you off Discogs, I am pretty sure the guy at Red Cat uses discogs for special orders. I like decently priced records, great selections, knowledgable staff and cheap tickets. Red Cat gets 4 check marks there. Even if they started being dicks I'd shop there, but they're not dicks. My first foray into Vancouver's record stores was nothing short of disappointing. Poor selection, high prices, and poor quality used vinyl. Some names kept popping up as highly recommended; Zulu, Audiophile, and Red Cat. I chose to venture to Red Cat based on it's recommendations and they were selling some tickets I wanted. The tickets were sold out, unfortunately, but Red Cat's selection made the trip all worth while. I went in with three diverse albums in mind, and left with those three albums in my hand. Joy Division, Can, and Nick Cave, oh how I love thee. My friend also made away with a good haul of Daft Punk, Moonface and Black Mold. My most expensive album was a 180 gram vinyl for $21, so the prices were more than reasonable. Not only did we get exactly what we had wanted, but we saw so, so much more that was just asking to be in my collection. Looks like I'll have to make another trip next week. To help ease my vinyl addiction, after every 10 albums purchased, your 11th is $11 off. Finally, a card in my wallet worth carrying around! read more

This store is what record shopping is about, if I need a new release or something ordered I come here! My first visit I had Chemical Brothers "Exit Planet Dust" on my wish list, no other shop in Van had it - not only did they have it brand new - they had a mint used copy for only $11, for that visit alone 5 stars. Since then I have gone back time and time again, I casually inquired about Blur "Parklife" they said it had to be backordered as it was out of print - 3 weeks later I get a call saying it's in the store - brand new $25 awesome stuff! Picked up "The Harder They Come" soundtrack the other day used, great condition $5. Also have brought in used vinyl for store credit, they always give it a fair look and offer reasonable prices - highly recommend... read more

Red cat is alright for records, great for turntables, and has very friendly, unpretentious music nerds working the front desk. If you live nearby and have your own vinyl collection or turntable you've probably been here many times. If you don't fit any of the criteria you may not ever need to come in unless there's a small local show with presale tickets. I love strolling past this place to check out the latest shows that are coming to Vancouver. I hadn't heard of them before I moved to the area but they have an awesome selection of concert tickets without the Ticketmaster service fees! Also, a sweet selection of used vinyl at reasonable prices. The new vinyl is a tad pricey though (minus 1 star).
