The park is not very clean as broken glass, smells of weed, and cigarette butts are normal around the park. This…read moreexpansive space acts like a potential Central Park of KC, equipped with Starlight, the Zoo, dog parks, hiking trails and golf courses. There have seen times there where I've been bullet casings littered around when I park, along with broken glass everywhere. It's too bad that is the case sometimes, because the potential here is a 5 out of 5 weekend park, but I have to dock it based on that. I like hiking and jogging the trails around here, they're surrounded by gigantic rocks, plenty of trees and even a good view or two as you make your way up. It's nice to have something like this that's not far from the city. I also love the Shawnee Mission Park trails, although they take some time to get out to for me.

If you're in the SM West area(s), then you're privy to some of the preserved gems of the early Kansas-side suburbs. Sure, things have migrated wayyyy out west and wayyyyyyyy out south, but these older neighborhoods are chock-full of charm. Maple Hills Park butts up against a Family Tree Nursery (yay! for Family Tree, because I met my wife at one!) and has been updated in several areas. The grass is cared for and mowed regularly, the ball field is free of clumps & divots that wreak havoc with a ground ball, and the path adds up to about 1/3 of a mile. The pickleball courts have been re-done from being tennis courts and they are a wonderful amenity. The play equipment is upgraded with soft landing areas so your littles can play safely. And there are even a pair of electric car charging ports for all you futuristic environmentalists. All of those items point right at the focus that the city/county have placed on re-energizing green spaces by adding a modern touch(es) to existing open space. If you're a JoCo denizen, then you know that we gots lots o' space out here, and it's a win to see those areas used and modernized. Like the cool kids say, 'touch some grass'!

They have a play area for the littles and for the bigger kids, a walking trail for walking and bicycling, tennis courts, baseball field, open yard space for both soccer and football, benches and shelter area, and when it's hot out...a water park! On top of multiple play areas, there is a splash park, over covers for picnics, a large walking trail with pavement, and exercise equipment. It also offers unique activities that you might not see at other parks. Lots of swinging options. Lots of parking as well. I love this park.

I believe there was also sporting fields that I wasn't paying that close of attention to it since my primary reason for going was the playground. The two-year-old grandchild enjoyed it and my six-year-old grandchild also enjoyed it. There was a sitting area that had a cover over it for shade. Most of the play area is in the sun, but the day that we went it was often on cloudy and windy so it was tolerable. It was not busy for a summer day. But around 4 PM two summer camps showed up so everyone left because that would've been a lot of kids on the playground.

A little PSA: the walking trail goes right by a small fishing pond and we just paid $1,200 to pull a fishing hook out of our dog's intenstines. Be super careful with your animals near there. Below you'll see photos of the pond. Notice that the nearest trash can is actually in a picnic shelter up the hill. There really should be a place to dispose of fishing line near the sign postings so that this has a lower chance of dropping on the trail and letting animals eat it.

Once upon a time I lived very close to this park and would enjoy the baby geese every spring, the vibrant fall leaves, the ice as it forms and breaks away each winter, and even the occasional bald eagle perched on a tree waiting for a snack to appear in the lake below. The playground here was recently renovated and is a wonderful place to bring the kids to play. The track around the lake is probably about a quarter mile so it's not a bad place to come for a quick jog either. I've seen folks fishing here, though, I'm not convinced it's the BEST fishing spot in town as the lake is fairly small and prone to algae issues as the temperatures rise. Overall, this is a great park that has a little something for everyone.
