when the old cinema was closed down it wasnt much of a loss to the town, it had become so behind…read morethe times that not many people visited anyway. when the suggestion to put a new cinema in the chartre hall was announced there was outrage as the charter hall was home to the much loved market. now the cinema is here and has been up and running for sometime it is obvious what a huge benefit ti is to the town. it is a very comfortable cinema with 2 screens, the smaller of the screens is especially comfortable with leather chairs and sofas and is also licensed. the films they show are all new releases and theer is a nice assortment of snacks available to buy from the kiosk. price wise th ecarlton is aslo cheaper than going to a big multiplex too :)

The seating is extremely comfortable with some screens having sofas available as well as chairs so you can enjoy the cinema experience from the comfort of your own sofa! There is a licensed bar here and they also offer waiter service and will serve drinks to your table while you watch the film. Sound system also seemed good and I did not hear any noise coming from other screens. My main criticism is that the management clearly have no clue about anything digital. The website is poor, the online booking system and ticket collection system are terrible. They are not listed on Google cinema. But ignoring all that, there's a good chance you will enjoy the movie. I did grab my purse and bag but had to leave all our just purchased concessions behind. It was cold outside and a lot of customers were milling about but no one came out to give us instructions. Then someone said it was an electrical problem and we couldn't go back inside so my son in law went and got the car and we left, sadly leaving two buckets of popcorn, candy and drinks at our seats. Those things sure aren't cheap plus we now have to try and get reimbursed by a third party ticket agency.

Never was a new cinema anticipated as much as this one. after months of apparent inaction on the…read morebuilding site suddenly St Austell's long awaited cinema opened its doors just in time for Christmas, with hundreds of local people losing bets that it would never open in time. How wrong we were - the building is modern, crisp, a vast improvement on the old cinema. Sweets, ice-creams and popcorn are reassuringly expensive (so stock up beforehand in your local supermarket) and there is a social bar area where you can meet up with friends before seeing your chosen film. We found the seats comfortable, roomy, spacious - overall a surprise! The carpets are a bit 70s but can't have everything. There isn't any parking nearby yet but it means you have plenty of time to discuss the film on the way back to your car. In summary, a pleasant surprise, a real treat for St Austell, and one we will go to again and again!

Okay so slightly more mainstream than independent, but these films would have probably involved trips to either Exeter or Plymouth. Don't expect your average multiplex with their cheap popcorn and drinks, this is a more discerning cinema. Couple with a meal at the White Hart, this makes for a great night out at the movies.

All this is merely an inconvenience and doesn't ultimately ruin a cinema experience, what makes the experience is the film, if you can in fact hear it that is. For the 120 minutes I attempted to watch Keira Knightly pout her way through another corseted number (don't judge me), all I could hear was the dramatic music and explosions of the next door action film.
