E.g I was looking for a Jo Downs bowl for a christmas present and they were more expensive here than on the website. Nice to see the real thing before I shopped online though. Would definitely recommend for a browse and possible unique purchase.

Concentrating on original prints, it has over the years brought some of the most exciting and distinguished images to this lovely town. I've always found the people at the Brook friendly, informed and committed to their part of the art market. Go there to just look: there's no hard-sell. Go there to buy and I've found the prices reasonable and the works well worth it.

The pebble beach is idyllic, and you can watch fishing boats coming back with their catch - which they also sell there and then. Back to the gallery: they have 2 outlets in the village, the Steam Gallery and the Marine House. Both display work from local artists, and the quality is very high (so are some prices). We found the most exquisite hand blown glass pieces, which would not be out of place in the most expensive shops in London. Beer itself is worth a visit for its quaint, quiet and authentic atmosphere; and whilst you are there, these two artshops should be on your list.

The gallery is housed in several rooms on the ground floor of what was once a house. It is the sister gallery to Marine House, which is situated further down the road towards the sea. The Steam Gallery has less traditional paintings than Marine House, although there is plenty on the walls often the emphasis is on sculpture and 3 dimensional work. Last time I visited there was a lot of glass sculpture on display, and there is usually jewellery and pottery too. Original artwork by local artists.

Possibly the most awkward experience I have had in any Plymouth shop. There are bright lights and…read morebig open windows showing off lots of modern artworks. i am interested in some current local artists and decided to take a look. There was a guy sitting at a table inside by the stairs. The door was locked and I pressed the buzzer. He just turned on his chair and ignored me. Eventually he pressed the release. I began to look around but was cross-examined as to my intentions and told that the four pictures I had looked at were all priced well in excess of £10k. The man went grumpily back to his chair and a little later appeared to take part in a remote art auction giving instructions to someone on the other end. I had barely been in the shop for ten minutes before I was gruffily told that he had to conduct business and would have to close the shop. Well how does he expect to sell anything. If he only takes customers by prior appountment only there should be a big warning notice on the front window.
