First things first, it is incredibly hard to find a surgical dermatologist. In this field it often seems like aesthetics over everything. Before the pandemic ruined everyone's life I was being seen at 2 practices in north jersey - the first one didn't seem to understand why I would be bothered that my alopecia spots weren't healing and the second practice stopped taking insurance after my second appointment. As each injection is hundreds of dollars lmao that promising relationship ended quickly. Healthcare for the rich indeed. For the last 5 years I've been managing the patchiness on my own to inconsistent effect. Recently, another unrelated issue requiring surgery kicked me into high gear to find a new provider. I sought recs from my local FB group, friends and family, etc but they all kept leading me down cottage skincare and other lanes. It was actually a good old-fashioned Google search that led me to Dr. Patel. Bravo on winning the SEO game! From the moment I called (and rescheduled thrice due to car trouble - dang it MINI), the office was welcoming, accommodating, and scheduling relatively quick appointments. On my first visit, Dr.Patel and his team were thorough, curious, and caring. I felt so comfortable with them and I felt like I mattered. In many ways women become "invisible" after age 40 - add race and body size to the mix and it can be difficult to get the care and compassion needed to navigate health challenges. Dr. Patel suggested I get a full blood work up - and actually caught my low iron and anemia. So many somatic mysteries cleared up just because someone listened and cared. I have a surgical procedure scheduled in a few weeks that will bring me immediate comfort and the topical meds and injections Dr. Patel is giving me have restarted hair growth in some persistent patchy spots. I'm very thankful I found this practice!

PLEASE do not go here. Doctor "thinks" a diagnosis but…read moreREFUSED to complete definitive testing (patch test, biopsy, blood work) as protocol required a four-week waiting period (insurance, assuming) before a test could be done. I attempted to advocate for myself and pay out of pocket for any of the tests to get a REAL understanding of what is going on with my skin. AN ACTUAL DIAGNOSIS not an "I think". She provided RX. Spent a lot of money on "hypothetical" treatments like the Rx and OTC aids for the "I think" diagnosis. At four-week BIOPSY appointment, Doctor REFUSED to do biopsy and asked ME what made HER think of the diagnosis. WHAT? Is this a prank? Does a Dr not read notes from prior visit. She handed me a phone number to see an allergist within the group to proceed with skin patch testing - she COULD do one of the types of skin patching tests THERE but it would be best for me to go to the recommended allergist because she no longer thinks I have what she said I had four weeks ago. Allergist within group would be more conclusive. FRUSTRATING. When I called Allergist Office, they expected me to do a consultation appointment prior to doing the testing the referral was for. RIDICULOUS and not helpful. Complete unempathetic. To top it off, 3 visits at Dermatologist, paid same co-pay at each visit. Received my EOB from insurance carrier; I overpaid every time. I had to call the Dermatologist Office to REQUEST a REFUND. They said there was a credit on my account for overpay which is hilarious since they never once offered it to me to pay for subsequent visits. RIDICULOUS - UNPROFESSIONAL - DO NOT GO TO THIS OFFICE! Oh, and one month later, still don't have refund.

I have not even once felt comfortable going here. although the doctor was decent (I say this even though my acne got worse after being seen here), this place is such a scam. every time I went and would pay a $50 fee in person and then they would later bombard me with emails and mail to AGAIN pay this $50. when I called to remedy this, they just made excuses without even apologizing for this mistake. extremely unorganized and unprofessional. if you value your money, time, and mental health, AVOID IT AT ALL COSTS.
