(He had a private tutor, who was a substitute teacher), who tutored him once and then quit because she didn't feel she was a good fit. I met with Ms. Gabrielle, the Center Director who was so welcoming and really understood a lot of my concerns. She addressed one of my concerns regarding my son needing accommodations to see and hear letters and sounds and she was able to make this accommodation for him and if not, it was a deal breaker for us. Second, Our private speech therapist had a 40 minute conversation with Ms. Gabrielle about how my son learns, where he's at with his language and what not to say because he honestly doesn't understand what that means. She has proven herself to be so instrumental in my sons ability to learn. She has also communicated this to my sons teachers. In about 4 months, my son has almost closed a years worth of learning. His teachers, Ms. Jen, Ms. Heather, Ms. Mimi And Ms. Rachel are treasures!! They really know how to teach and having them at sylvan is an asset and I'm hoping the directors notice this. The class itself was organized, professional, and helpful. My son took the SAT and did really well. Once we learned that the high school was going to give another SAT test to all of the juniors, my son was able to sit in on even more classes to help bone-up for the next test. I was really impressed with how accommodating they were...and how invested they are in trying to get the best test score out of your kid.

What stood out most was how quickly he thrived. In only two hours the staff managed to connect with him in a way that made him feel capable and motivated. One of the biggest gifts they gave him was self-discipline. It wasn't forced or punitive; it was taught in a way that helped him take ownership of his own behavior and focus. I am confident to say that without Gideon we would still be playing a bit of "catch-up." My personal opinion...you do have to put the work in at home. If you are expecting a "miracle" after a month or two, I honestly do not think any learning center will fit the bill. It takes time and dedication to make sure our son is doing the work at home and prepared for the next challenge at class. (Yes we do trade Gideon homework for electronics time!) I have tried kumon (multiple centers in Plano) before and was complete failure. Didn't like their curriculum, neither the way of teaching. The experience was terrible for the amount of money you pay. My daughter will be there for 5-10 minutes with many other kids per teacher without consistency or care about student progression and then will send her home with meaningless homeworks. So far we LOVE Gideon (although you have to be committed for the tremendous amount of work at home) so far we don't regret it!
