Don't expect world class service or top notch bikes but you do get an incredible deal on a rental that's in a very convenient location to the Venice to Santa Monica bike trail. $12.00 for an hour rental is great. They did put at $150 temporary hold on our card which we were refunded. The bikes we rode were older and didnt have hand brakes, they were basic cruisers. We did get a child seat for our toddler and it did its job! Been coming here whenever ever I come for a beach bike ride every few years and will continue doing so for the value and convenience. read more

Came here on a Friday morning and rented some bikes to cruise down by the beach. The process was super easy, you scan fill out the waiver and show your ID and credit card and that's it. The staff was super friendly they make sure that you are on your bike and comfortable before going out and about. The return was just as easy. Great way to see the beach and get some movement in! read more

Selection: We've rented roller blades twice from Rays Rentals so far and the experience was very good. Great value for money. Reserve online, come in pick them up. Service was Quick and easy. Blades came in a great quality and clean. Less than block away from the beach parking. They place a hold on your credit card on top of the rental fee when u pick them up and that's released the moment u return them, so that's understandable. Stopped in on a busy Saturday after not being able to reach anybody by phone. There was only one guy working and he was doing 10 things at once (a multitasking man!), checking people in for bike rentals, accepting bike returns and disinfecting the bikes for the new renters, basically running round like crazy. I now understood why the telephone doesn't get answered, no vm either but ah, what evs, it all l worked out! I waited for about 5 minutes and when it was my turn to step up to the counter I asked about pricing and was told $10 an hour for a one gear beach cruiser. Perfecto! That's just what I was lookin for! I also rented a basket for an additional $3 (it was VERY small), I wanted to put my little pooch in there but she didn't really fit, not comfortably anyway. Bummer! I kept the basket anyway, signed all the documents (details: they ask for a credit or debit card, address, and driver's license, all entered into an iPad, you have to sign some paper documents and they place $150 "hold" on your card until you return the bike. At that time you can either pay cash or charge it to the card). I chose a cruiser that was sitting on the floor, he disinfected it and off I went! I was able to ride the entire strand up to Santa Monica and stop at a store for a little shopping all in one hour. I rode back, Angel checked my bike in, I paid the $13 cash and bam! Dunzo! Angel was helpful, super friendly and efficient checking in and checking out the bikes. Other than that the store has some random beach stuff (see photos) as well as fun things to buy for your bike. Great experience over all, I'll definitely rent again from them in the future. read more

Came here a few months ago with my boyfriend, he asked a question and was being friendly as someone who is not from California. Not sure who it was but it was a man at the counter, but he gave off passive aggressive and not friendly vibes. He may not have done this intentionally but almost tried to make my boyfriend sound like he was not smart for asking a question, when he just asked if we were allowed to ride bikes in certain areas of Venice or if it was illegal because rules are different state to state. First and last time coming here and will not come here again, could have almost had new customers but because of his attitude we just walked away. There wasn't any arguing or yelling, was a quick casual conversation with a few questions with quick answers. Once we saw he was not in the mood we just turned away. The messed up thing about it though he was being friendlier to the people who were in line in front of us but they were the same race as him, but as soon as we walked up his demeanor changed. Thank god we didn't give any money to this business Venice in general I find that certain shops tend to treat you a certain way if you are a difference race and I think this is one of those shops. Neither me or my boyfriend are the same race as the people in the shop and this has happened to us in this area by nearby shops before so just keep an eye out if you are not from here. There can be a passive aggressiveness towards you from minorities in this area and surrounding cities, and this is coming from someone who is a minority who has been to this area many times. read more

I came in on my road bike for a repair to a bad flat on my rear tire. Unfortunately, I didn't have any spares w/me, so the girl in the shop had to hunt around to find a tube that was potentially suitable (the stem was really too short). She had me pre-pay for the tube and change out of the old tube - a shocking $38. I removed the tire from my bike, loosened the tire from the rim and handed it to her. 35 minutes later, she was still struggling with it; she couldn't seem to get air into it, so she finally put a schraeder adapter on it and used the compressor in the back to inflate. No sign of a tire gauge except on the conpressor which read 85lb (i inflate to 110) and insistance that the tube was going to pop. Finally ready to put the wheel with the under-inflated tube back on the bike, she then proceeded to remove the axel (why?????) from my wheel. I took over and finished putting on my own wheel - I can't even begin to understand why she would remove the axel as part of putting it back on the bike, what the heck?? Beyond annoyed. Long story short - that girl and her 2.5" fingernails has NO business touching any bikes, nevermind changing a tube and having the NERVE to charge almost $40 for the service. I just thanked my lucky stars that it held long enough for me to ride back to my car 10 miles or so north of the shop. I personally feel the shop should refund me at least half of the full amount, as it wasted almost 45 minutes of my time, I had to help (i should have done it myself) AND i had to replace the tube as soon as I got home. read more

I saw that a Rays rentals opened near me and I was stoked! I used to live in San Diego where the original Ray's rental shop was. I used to love going there, so when I saw this new location I had to go in. The staff was professional and they helped us pick out the bikes we wanted. The family then went for a safe ride. I am very concerned about my experience in the Venice Beach branch today. My husband, myself and our 11y old son had rented bikes for 4h. We were advised by the only worker in the shop that we should take a lock (which would secure all 3 bikes) if we were going to leave them at any point. I agreed to do so. We paid $25 for each bike and a $120 depositfor each bike. It was expensive we thought but as it was an established company, we agreed. We cycled from Washington Boulevard to Santa Monica Pier and locked the bikes up. We had an hour on the pier and came back to the bikes and cycled back towards Venice Beach. We stopped and locked the bikes up by Perry's Cafe and went to the beach. I panicked as when we got to the sea, the key to the lock was missing off the elastic band to which it was attached. I walked back and forth to the beach and couldn't see it. So I phoned the shop on Washington Boulevard for advice. He said the walk would take 1.5h and there was no spare key and the only thing he could offer was that I came to the shop with ID to fetch bolt cutters. And he couldn't help as he was the only one in the shop so I needed to take a taxi. I did not want to leave the bikes unattended for that long so I decided to have one last look - and we found the key in the sand. We were so happy. Unfortunately as we were getting back to the bikes, a man was cutting the lock with a bolt cutter. My husband ran to the bikes but he rode off. My husband tried to chase him but he was gone. My husband and son cycled back to the store with the 2 remaining bikes and I walked back. It was 1.6 miles and 37 minutes. But the man in the shop was not sympathetic, not helpful, was not able to provide paperwork, not able to provide evidence of the cost of any lost property and would not let us leave without my agreeing to sign a receipt for $250. I had resolved myself to losing $120 as one bike had been stolen, but to lose $250 without evidence or paperwork made me feel sick and very upset. If I had been on my own and paid a deposit of $120 for a single bike and just hadn't brought it back, I would have been better off. I was blackmailed as I had signed a deposit for $360 and iF I hadn't agreed to pay $250, I would have lost $360. It feels like a complete scam, made worse by the fact that the shop worker was SO unhelpful. And worse still, 45 minutes before the bike was stolen, I had phoned the shop to tell him the problem about the lost key, exactly where the bike was and how long it would be unattended for. It seems almost as if the bike was stolen at the perfect time, with the instrument that was recommended to me, that the money taken from us was arbitary and that no paperwork could be produced. And he didn't want us to call the police as the bike was uninsured - despite the fact that the bike lock was very poor (only D-locks in San Francisco) and that bike thefts were (weirdly) very unusual. I am shocked this place only has 3 stars? Sounds like the New Yorker who left the one start review doesn't know how to ride a beach cruiser lol. Ray's Rentals is the BEST. This is their 5th or 6th location in SoCal and I'm so glad they're finally in LA. I always go to their locations in San Diego and OC. We used Ray's Rentals this past weekend with my husband and 15 month old. I've rented adult bikes many times with them, but this was my first time getting a child seat. They had everything we needed to make our toddler happy and comfortable. She had the ride of her life! The seats and helmets were clean and sanitized, and they take extra cleaning measures for COVID 19. The girl at the front desk was very helpful and efficient at her job, she managed several customers at once and everyone was well taken care of. Our bikes were in great condition and super comfortable. I can't wait to come back to this new location. Ray's is bringing Venice Beach back to life! some extra perks that I love about this place- they don't up-charge for accessories like helmets and baskets. Super friendly and helpful rental and repair shop near Venice Beach. I left my bike there overnight for some brake repair and overall gear check. They called me the next day when it was ready, and the work was done efficiently, perfectly, inexpensively. It can be tough to find shops like this with such great service, but Andy and Alex and this place get an A+++ from me. Highly recommend! read more

Update: Ray, the owner of the shop, kindly reached out. He apologized for what happened and has spoken with Alex. Ray offered a complimentary future repair. It seems we may have just had a run in with an employee that doesn't care or want to be there, and that isn't a true reflection of the rest of the team. I really appreciated that Ray took the time to make things right, and am willing to give them another shot. Original review: Stopped by last Tuesday and asked if I got to them by 6:30pm (the earliest I could get there after work) if they'd be able to install 2 new tubes (possibly tires too) on my bike. (They're open until 7:00pm now but haven't updated their hours anywhere online). The guy I spoke with said yes, so today my friend and I walked my bike 45 min to the shop, arriving a little early, at 6:20. Alex, the guy working, said he couldn't do it. I asked him why and he said because "I have plans and don't have enough time." I asked him how long it would take to replace the tires or tubes, and he said 10 minutes each... so it being 6:20pm we would have plenty of time before 7:00pm.. He kept arguing and said he had to bring in all the stuff from outside so he could close at 7. If you advertise that you close at a certain time, you don't turn customers away when they're there with plenty of time before closing. If you're not going to help anyone before 7:00, you should change your closing time to 6:30pm. Alex was very dismissive and didn't have an answer to my questions. He clearly didn't care, even though we were told to bring my bike there and that they could do it. All he offered was for me to leave my info for a manager to call me at a later time. So we ended up running down the street to J's Rentals and they hooked me up and fixed my bike in 15 minutes!! J's provided incredible service. I would highly recommend going to them instead. What a crappy way to treat your neighbors. I'll be sharing this with the rest of the Venice community and the bike parade crew as well. read more

Bike rental and service was all great but I was mischarged on my credit card. I called and asked for a refund. I was told to wait as they would get back to me but this was never followed up on; I called twice and was told twice to wait. I'm sure the mischarge was just a mistake but the lack of follow through is disappointing. read more

DO NOT RENT FROM THIS BUSINESS! It is INCREDIBLY UNSAFE - I regret bringing my nephew here. Rent from literally anyone else in the Venice or Marina area. They rented us three defective bikes (one had gears that did not work, one had misaligned brakes, and one had the gears on backwards/switched such that there was confusion between shifting). Somehow they went three for three on what were supposed to be brand new bikes! We brought the bikes back shortly after taking them out and discovering these issues and they REFUSED TO REFUND US OUR MONEY! Not only did they provide us with unsafe/potentially very dangerous bikes - when we requested the refund the gentleman at the front said we had already been charged for a full day rental and their policy was no refunds so nothing he could do. WHAT?! I write a review once every blue moon, but this. I cannot stress any more - keep your family safe and do not deal with these crooks. read more
