Please know that I really wanted to like this place! We were referred by another shop to take my son's imported BMW to Rays. We read the reviews and were excited to have found somewhere to take his car. The BMW had started running hot so we took it to Rays. We had it towed. We understood it would be a couple of days but about 4 days later they called my son and told him they would be fixing the issue and talked him into some wiring work. They told him it would be about $1400 dollars. A couple days later when I hadn't heard anything I called and was told they were waiting on a relay switch they had ordered and the price I was given was $1580. Again I went with it! Another few days of no communication go by I call back and I get a lady who tells me they are still waiting for a part , but not the relay switch. Now the price is at almost $1800 . I am told at this point this is the last time the price will change and will stay at this amount .Now the car has been at Rays for 2 +weeks, communication is not great, but we are finally told the car is ready for pick up. I realize that I probably won't be there before they close so trustingly pay over the phone and they say they will leave the keys under the mat. When my son and I get there, Rays is still open and a lady comes out to give my son his keys. My son attempts to start the car and it rumbles and trembles terribly and then stalls out. It can't be started after that. So we go inside where the owner is sitting and tell him what happened. He looks to a young mechanic who clearly doesn't feel comfortable looking at the car and says he should wait for whoever was working on it, but the owner makes him go outside to look. The young kid struggles but is able to start the car ,but it's definitely not idleing the way it use to. We go back inside where he tells the owner what happened and he couldn't tell what was going on but the car was running. We stupidly and regretfully were convinced that things were fine and took the car. 3 miles into our drive the car starts to over heat again. We immediately pull over and call Ray's and tell him the car is overheating again and we're on the side of the road. The owner asks if we think we could bring it back and drive it, I told him I didn't feel comfortable driving the car hot and instead of him offering to get it back, he says that we can have it towed back if we wanted to! Of course we wanted to ,we wanted our car fixed. We just paid $1800 to o have our car fixed and it's not! So out of our own pocket we pay for another tow truck and get it towed back. We are told that they would look at it first thing the following morning. The following day I call in the afternoon where the owner answers and sounds irritated that I have called. He said they haven't had a chance to look at it yet and he would call me when they did. Of course I didn't hear anything for 2 days I called back and again he's irritated. They still have not looked at my vehicle. Now don't get me wrong, I know not to cut in front of people however, we have already spent three weeks trying to get our car fixed here I would think that maybe we could take precedent. But very wrong! We finally get told they found out that it is unfortunately the master cylinder (they made sure it was known they did the diagnostic test for free!). I didn't really understand why this wasn't checked first ! We literally were told that because they did not check the master cylinder issue beforehand when they filled up the car with fluid and turned it on it literally drowned ! They estimated the new fix to be about 3,400. We had already spent 1, 800 and now we were being told another 3400 was needed. Unfortunately we don't have that money so now my kid is out $1,800 and his car! The absolute lack of communication and concern was really irritating. I know stuff happens, but I really feel we were taking advantage of. My son is a teenager, he's learning the ways of the world and he got a real dose of reality with this one. I wish we were just told it couldn't be fixed. I wish we hadn't paid until it was fixed, I wish a lot of things. But eventually a month later we got it towed back from the shop and now it sits in our driveway un drivable! . read more

Read the reviews first. I was referred by two people to come to this place so I tried... waited a week for an appointment. Was told initially by "George" he "guaranteed" a 24 hour turn around for my fiber optic audio problem. Dropped my car off and it sat in the same spot for two days where I had parked it. When I called the second day for an update and or to authorize any repairs needed, I was told it was more than they had anticipated.. I drive down their street multiple times a day for work.. the car hadn't moved at all so how is it more than they had anticipated if they hadn't even looked at the car? George lied over the phone instead of being up front and honest that they were backed up and busy.. if it was more than anticipated why was I not charged anything for a diagnostic? Seems to me the car wasn't touched and looked at haha. If he lied about that, what else would they have lied about on the repairs? Dude is a weasel that does not know how to communicate to customers. I'll be telling everyone I know in this area to stay away from this place. Gross and unprofessional shop. Go somewhere else haha. George is a joke read more

TERRIBLE! HORRIBLE! AND SHAMEFUL! PLEASE READ THIS AND THE REVIEW BY Jeff S. in BBB BEFORE TAKING YOUR CAR TO THIS SHOP. This Auto shop is NOT anything to be trusted! Period! First, we made an appointment for ... On the day of the appointment, we dropped our Mercedes E500 car with the specific instruction that the trunk would not close wither with the remote or manually, nor could we open it either way. In fact, we taped the trunk to get the car to the repair shop. After dropping the car around 8:am, we expected a call by 11:am to learn of the diagnosis, no call. By 4:pm we called the shop and I was told that the technician was still diagnosing the car. On the 2nd day, no call from Ray's import. On the third day, we decided to drive there to talk face to face. That was the beginning of lies and scam manipulations. We were told that the remote unit was bad and the part would need to be ordered. And that the part would arrive within 5 business days. Five days went no parts. 7 days gone, bad weather. Ten days are gone; we got a promise of FedEx delivery by 10:am the following day. On the 11th day, the truck broke down! On and on, no end to lies! Disgusting! But Ray's import demanded the payment for the parts, so we gave our credit card, but instead of charging us for the parts only, Ray's import scammed us and charged the full payment of $715.68 for the repair instead of $345.60 for parts. When we challenged the guy, he said "Oh it is easier to do it that way, you just have to trust us". Well, we were fooled by the fake and paid-for reviews that rated Ray's import excellent over the year. Hope no one else will fall victim. But wait, we found one terrible review similar but worse than our experience on BBB. It was written by Jeff S in August of 2019. Actually, this was an eye-opener. Please read it before you take your car To Ray's import. His BMW X5 was in and out for 8 months at Ray's import at the cost of worthless $800.00 As it were, Ray's import played the game with us for almost three weeks, before we decided to pull our car out of their shop and now headed to a dealer where "Yes is Yes and No is No!" Thanks to Jeff. Lessons learned: 1. Ray's imports lie and cannot be trusted. They kept on moving the arrival date of the part with no solution in sight. As we went to take our can the owner told us to bring the car back for another two days of diagnosis. But he said: "It is not an exact science; it is a rolling trial and error". Really?? 2. They really don't care about customer service. We did all the calling, and they just put us on hold in the freezer! 3. Ray's import is extremely untrustworthy. Why will any repair shop charge customers for a job that is not yet done? SCAM! 4. The business has no integrity, otherwise, when we contested the charge with our credit card, they should have called us, instead of disputing it. But they will have to dispute that in court and tell the judge why they charged us for a job not done. A part of us suspected discriminatory treatment because we are black Americans, but that thought was quickly dispelled by the fact that we saw many cars laying waste in their shop for weeks, and of course Jeff. S review proofed something beyond racial discrimination. Notwithstanding: how can a smart company grossly misspell our last name even though, they copied it from a credit card. "MONAQUNGU" IS NOT EVEN CLOSE TO THE SPELLING OF OUR LAST NAME. What a Shame! A grade 2 kid would do much better. Hopefully, your conscience will pinch your chest and you will learn to treat all your customers equally with due respect and for the money, they will pay you! 5. Watch out for crooked repair shops. It does not matter how many 50 years they have been in business. We definitely go to court to get our money back! read more

Returned my car empty of oil & not repaired after paying $2,000 - they fired mechanic / did not refund my money. My vehicle overheated And was towed to the shop for evaluation. First report was no damage to engine other than temp sensor, ignition coil and spark plugs... $1400. Repair completed. Second report also has leaking thermostat housing... $630. Repair completed. Total of $2k repairs on my $4k car. After driving home I found the car 3qts low of oil (see photo) They had returned my car without properly refilling (or inspecting) the oil. I topped it off. Next day driving, it indicated elevated temperature again, so I had it towed (again). After Ray's inspection (by another tech) they informed me it was the head gasket all along. It had been missed by the same tech that also failed to tend to the basic need of oil. The additional repair ..$4,000. This would total $6k in my $4k car. They had since terminated the original mechanic. They apologized for the error but would not refund any of my $2k they wasted. Important to note is I requested specific inspection of the head before spending money on repairs. Also important to note is the engine was never cleaned which is required to do a thorough inspection and repair of the thermostat housing. I believe this shop generally produces great work but they hired a poor mechanic and their lack of quality assurance allowed him to harm a customer, and they chose to not stand behind it. All indicators are their interest in the bottom line is greater than a want to do the right thing. read more

Be VERY careful. My daughter is a scholarship student at MTSU. She called me (We live in another state) and told me that oil or something was dripping (2 drops in 2 days) on her foot when her foot was on the brake or the clutch. Her car is very well maintained. I tried to diagnose it over the phone. Nothing added up. But, I told her to bring it in just to be safe and find out the issue. (I don't recommend delaying when it comes to brake or clutch systems). Ray's had the car all day and told her that her master cylinder was leaking into the power brake booster and the repair would include replacing both the master cylinder and brake booster for $1,600. I asked her more questions about the circumstances. Her brakes were functioning as usual and pedal pressure was as it always is. Her brake light never came on and there was no change in brake performance. I told her to go pick it up and told George that I needed to look at it before okaying the repair. I travelled to Murfreesboro for a few days. Her brake fluid level was perfect, which doesn't add up if the MC was filling up the booster and leaking on her foot. I did a basic, easy brake booster check and it functioned as normal. I drove her car for 2 days with no drops and drops were never on her floor mats. Brakes never faded and operated as normal. Then, the next afternoon, I was driving in a typical afternoon thunderstorm, where it poured hard. Brakes worked fine. That evening, I took the car for anther check ride, and after about 10 minutes, I got fluid on my foot. I investigated and it turns out, water from the storm found its way through a rubber grommet on the firewall. That was the Brake fluid leak! For Ray's to make that diagnosis and planning to charge $1600.00 for unnecessary work and parts is either sloppy or a planned ripoff. Bottom line, If you bring your car in and the estimate is over $400.00, take it somewhere else for a second opinion. To ripoff local college kids is a quick way to go out of business. Social media spreads like wildfire and every student athlete at MTSU as well as the coaches at MTSU has heard her story. Stay away entirely or make sure you get a second opinion before you allow them to start any work. read more

I drive a VW Beetle, and I had checked out 4 other mechanics when I stumbled upon Ray's 3 years ago. I have been going there ever since! The waiting area is a warm, clean "living room", and the employees there make everyone feel comfortable. Everyone is nice and helpful. They have always kept my best interest at heart. They have repaired everything from air conditioning to catalytic converters, not to mention a multitude of oil changes and basic services. You can have complete confidence that they know what they are doing. If you want reliable, reasonably priced service, don't waste your time on any other shop. Ray's is no doubt the best! My daughter, who is a MTSU student, had a problem with her 1999 Subaru Outback Legacy when she was leaving the grocery store one afternoon. The car wouldn't start and the horn/alarm was going off intermittently. She called me at that time, we live in Knoxville, and I told her to call AAA and I would find a garage to take it to. I came upon Ray's Imports and saw the good reviews. I called and explained our situation to the manager, Joe. He seemed very sympathetic to the situation and said that MTSU students got a 10% discount. We had the car towed to that shop. I was called the next day and was told that something had tripped her alarm system, that shut down the ability of the car to start. The battery was dead, it also needed new battery cables and ground wire. I wasn't clear about how this related to the alarm going off but, was told that the problem would be solved. I was given a quote of ~$500, that was with the discount. I thought it sounded high for what they were going to do but thought maybe there were things not mentioned that had to do with fixing alarm system. I really had no choice except to tell them to go ahead and fix it. My daughter picked her car a couple of days later. I had her email me a copy of the bill. The parts were $185, there was a $50 charge for battery installation, a $10 environmental fee, the rest were labor charges which were not broken down in per hour charges. She needed gas and stopped shortly after leaving the garage. The car wouldn't start, she called the garage and they had to send somebody to the gas station to get it to start again. In the following days it took her 7 to 8 key turns to start the car, it is slowly coming down to only having to try 2-3 times. Since then I found out that the battery in her car was 10 months old and had a 2 year full replacement warranty, and cost over $100. Batteries are dated, and often the receipt is in a plastic pouch on the side of the battery. None of this was mentioned to me, nor was I told that I had a battery that was still under warranty. Even if they couldn't return the battery we weren't given the option to take it ourselves and have it replaced. As far as we could tell they fixed the malfunctioning alarm was to disconnect the horn. When my daughter got back to Knoxville we took the car to our regular mechanic to have the horn reconnected and not have it going off again and shutting off the car. My husband called the garage on Friday, 8/19 to ask about the charges and battery. He was told the garage was busy and that they would call him back on Monday. He has not gotten called. We have several questions about the charges. Why is there a separate charge of $50 to install the battery, a 5 minute job. I know because I've done it myself. I do not believe that what was listed on our bill justified over $250 in labor charges. I feel that we were taken advantage of, maybe because I am in Knoxville, or because we were in a position of no other options. I would not recommend this business due to my experience. read more

I took my 1973 914 Porcshe to get it running again after sitting in my garage for 8 years. They refurbished my gas tank, repaired and relaced the complete fuel injection system along with checking everything else it needed to get it to run like new again. It also need a difficult floor welding project as well which they went out of their way to repair. Their shop is clean, organized and everything in its place which you don't see in other places. They communicated with me on every step of the way. No one else would work on this car so I'm very grateful I have a shop I can count on. Thank you George. read more

I originally went to eurofix to get work done and they are so impersonal and wanted to charge me $750 for one motor mount whereas to replace all three at Rays for the same price. This place is totally worth going to because they know what they're doing. I have a Volvo s40 and it's hard to find a garage I can trust, but now I have Rays to help me! I called this place in a panic after running over a chunk of concrete on the road. My car immediately started making a horrible noise and I was panicking. Got my car to them at 4pm, and they had looked at it and fixed it by 5:30pm. I can't think of any other shop experience I have had where I've gotten that quick of last minute service. The guys working there were incredibly nice and helpful. As a female, I've run into the condescending attitude from auto shops before, and got nothing of the sort here. I haven't been to Ray's in a very long time, so please excuse my ignorance of how this shop takes care of their customers these days. Back in the very late 80's I had a 1972 Volkswagen Beetle, and I would take my little VW Bug to him anytime I had a problem. They always treated me right and even went out of their way to make sure that they gave me a great price. I haven't been there in a long time but since reading this on Yelp I will be going again. I really like how they stood up and told that one guy that they would reimburse him if he came back. That means a lot these days! Thank you and have a great day. read more
