Ray's consistently serves great tasting, creamy hand dipped ice cream and in so many flavors. They use only the highest quality ingredients, particularly the cream, and it's easy to taste the difference compared to others especially grocery store brands. For over 15 years we've stopped into Ray's from time to time when we're in the area. It's been a trusted go-to in our family for ice cream we can always rely on. Love that they retained their indoor vintage winding counter and red stool seating - the kids love it too. Service is consistently polite and fast. Don't be daunted if you see a line out the door; it moves quickly.

It's summertime so of course I went to get ice cream. I have had more ice cream this summer than I have ever had in my life, and while on my annual Michigan vacation, I had the pleasure of stumbling upon Ray's! My fiance grew up in the area, but he'd never had it, so we were both trying it out for the first time. We were in the area for 2 weeks, and visited Ray's at least 5 times LOL. The ice cream is just that good! I got one with peanut butter in it, and another that was banana flavored. So yummy! My fiance got Mackinaw fudge every time, and his was just as good! The prices are way lower than they should be, and it's always so busy, but it makes sense! And you will definitely be overwhelmed by the flavor selection, but there are no wrong choices!! There is bar seating inside, and table and bench seating outside; it's very throwback. Visit! You won't regret it!
Rays is well known in the Ice cream and royal oak community formany years. Its atmosphere is that of an old fashioned ice cream shop. They have seasonal flavors and local Michigan flavors and their own combinations. Their ice creams are carried in specialty markets but you've got to try this original location. First time trying Ray's and it won't be last as I'm happy to see that have vegan flavors that are not sorbet and looking at some pictures of the menu from a week ago, they do rotate the flavors which is awesome! We definitely need more dairy free options. We both had size small and it was huge! You can also make two flavors in size small, which is super cool! I had the vegan butter pecan, and it was good, and it had a lot of pecans. Hubby tried two flavors of dairy ice cream, and he enjoyed it, too. Staff was quick and friendly despite long lines. We will definitely be back!
Line was out the door on a Friday night, so I knew this was the place to be! We waited for maybe 10 minutes which wasn't too bad. Loved that they gave samples here while deciding what to order! I'm a sucker for blue food and drinks so of course I had to try the Cookie Monster, which I ordered in a kiddie cup. They honestly gave a good amount in the kiddie cup, so if you're not too hungry I would recommend that size. The blue moon ice cream base had an interesting aftertaste to me, somewhat like strong almond extract, which I didn't like too much. The cookies incorporated in it were a fun touch though and made the aftertaste more subtle. I would love to come back here and try some of their other flavors, they had so many options that sounded so delish!
I love Ray's nostalgic ice cream polar and soda fountain vibe. Immediately when you step inside the doors you are taken back to the 1950's. You simply can't find that atmosphere anywhere else in the area which makes Ray's unique and fun! I've been coming here since i was a little kid and recently came for a Yelp Elite event. It was the perfect sweet treat on a hot summer day! I learned from a friend that they've been in business since 1958! There are over 40 flavors of ice cream including my dairy free sorbets and 2 different vegan ice creams. My favorites are Chocolate peanut butter and Fat Elvis. Their hand scooped ice cream is made on site and is so creamy and delicious! Portions are very generous and a small size is 2 scoops. Pints and quarts can be purchased at Rays or in specialty stores like Nino's Salvaggio or Papa Joe's. It gets very crowded and lines are almost always out the door at peak times but it's well worth the wait. It's no surprise that Ray's was voted best local ice cream parlor by Hour Detroit in 2022. I defiantly will be back this summer to try more of their seasonal flavors like Macinaw Island Fudge.
Small parking lot, but plentiful seating both inside and out. I love the vibe in here, it's retro with an updated twist. I love the old fashioned counter and the ice cream was delicious! The young lady behind the counter was super nice and made some great suggestions. My husband and I shared 2 scoops, the Fat Elvis and Peanut butter chocolate. The Fat Elvis was icy instead of creamy, but the chocolate peanut butter hit the spot! If Ray's was closer it would easily be our go to ice cream place.
Super cute old-school ice cream shop. This place has the old soda jerk diner look. The people behind the counter were very friendly. We tried the chocolate peanut butter and the Fat Elvis flavored ice cream. The ce cream was pretty good. I loved the chocolate peanut butter the best. The Fat Elvis was a little on the icy side. Overall, this is a great neighborhood ice cream shop.
Great experience, the ice cream was delicious I love chocolate chip cookie dough it had the perfect amount of cookie doughs mixed in. The service was fast and friendly. I will definitely be back
Ray's Ice Cream was a cute, 50's-style ice cream parlor with a relaxing tone and chill environment. When my friends and I hurriedly entered the establishment from the harsh winter cold, we were immediately greeted with a warm welcome by the staff. As a new customer, I browsed through the available selection of ice cream. Although I was given no assistance in my choice, the staff was very patient in my indecisiveness of the many available options from ice cream flavors to toppings. I ultimately settled for a beautiful, Double-Scoop Cookie Monster in a Cup. Upon first bite, I felt I was the Cookie Monster as I devoured the creamy deliciousness! It was a perfect blend of fulfilling texture and taste between a unique blue moon flavor and cookies & cream chunks. The experience was of the utmost quality and a fun memory with friends. I will definitely be making a second visit. Bring your spoon and join me!

Wowow where do I start ! The establishment was nice, clean and very well lit. A blast from the past experience from the moment you walk in the door with an array of flavors that I guarantee will make your mouth water. The service was fantastic, we were between multiple flavors and before even having the idea, the workers asked if we would like to try any. The ice cream is well priced for the size of scoop you get. I thought this place made all of their ice cream on site, I asked for some reason I asked and the girl there told me they don't. Some flavors are made by Hudsonville and some other makers. A solid 4 stars for traditional hard hand packed ice cream served. Prices are reasonable and the portions are adequate. A classic and staple of the Royal Oak and surrounding cities area. This is the 2nd time going after they were on several news stations after the owner started a go fund me campaign, and of course I did my part there and went in to support as well. But what is up with no Chocolate with Peanut Butter? How can they not have it the 2 times I've gone? The girl told me they normally have it, but they are out. If you are out, then maybe you should make more or buy more from where you get it. Is understand you cant carry every flavor, but maybe lose some of the not selling flavors instead. read more

Always such a blast coming here! I only recently found this place as an adult, but the nostalgia is still so prevalent of a feeling for Ray's. I popped into Rays (still open in the winter!). I like the local, old school feel of the place. They have a U shaped counter to sit at inside as well as outdoor tables. I was there for an event, and had "pressed" ice cream, vanilla in the form of a snow man. It was my first time at Rays, and the vanilla was awesome. I plan going back in warmer months to try some other flavors. read more

I'm happy that a Yelp event introduced me to Rays! I've passed by countless times since moving to the area four years ago. I got their whiskey chocolate and peanut butter and apple cider mill donut ice cream and it was absolutely amazing. I'll definitely be paying more visits to rays in the future! read more

Visited Ray's for 1st time. Owners and staff were so friendly and really passionate about this business. Ice cream was top notch. Brought some home to my husband and he commented on the creaminess and quality. Interior was a fun vintage vibe with the antique soda counters. I can see why they have long term and multi generation customers coming in as regulars. Owners are completely open to suggestions for flavors or how to best promote the business. I was invited to attend a flight tasting of new ice cream flavors at Ray's from Yelp. First thing to know - I love ice cream. On vacation, I stop at various ice cream shops. I love finding something new. However, my main go-to is vanilla with sprinkles. Now, onto Ray's..... The new flavors were presented as a flight of four; then a mini-shake; and another flight of four. The first flight consisted of: Apple Cider; Cider Donut; Lemon Blueberry cookie; fudge Brownie Cookie. Apple Cider was cinnamon ice cream served with apple cider poured on top; Cider Donut was cinnamon ice cream with donut pieces inside and topped with a donut piece; Lemon Blueberry was lemon with crushed blueberries and topped with a cookie piece (for me not liking lemon, I found this delicious); and fudge Brownie Cookie topped with a brownie piece. My favorite here was the Lemon Blueberry. The mini-shake options were a Black Cherry Vernors Cooler or Apple Cider shake - I went with the Apple Cider shake. It was like drinking a donut - sounds gross, but it was just the opposite. The second flight I opted for the "boozy" flight consisting of Guinness; Bailey's; Chocolate Peanut Butter Whisky; and Butter Pecan Bourbon. I am not a beer fan -I didn't like the Guinness. The Butter Pecan and Bailey's were nice, but the Choco PB Whisky was amazing. My favorite here was the Choco PB Whisky. The owners are recently new and understand the impact of an institution like Ray's. They were polite and happy to have our group there, want to make new flavors and collaborate with other local businesses for exclusive flavors, and become a high-end ice cream/dessert. I purchased a quart of the lemon blueberry for my husband. My all time favorite from this experience would be the Choco PC Whisky, and I would get it again. I hope to stop in again and see what they have come up with in the future. read more

Always has been one of my go to ice cream places! I was invited by yelp for a snowman sundae which was a cute pressed vanilla snowman with 2 toppings! It seemed small at first but truthfully just the right size! Rays is my favorite with so many homemade ice cream flavor options and many dairy free options also! read more

Ray's is a classic old school ice cream parlor. About my only beef with the place is it could use more parking. I've never gone when the nail salon next door is open and usually end up parking in their lot. I see people on here griping the ice cream isn't *that* good and well, maybe I don't know what spectacular, gourmet ice cream is but the stuff Ray's serves seems mighty tasty and makes me happy. $3.50 isn't bad for a single scoop, shakes are a bit steep at $7, I think, not to obsess about it like Vincent Vega though. The last three times I was at Ray's I had Peppermint, Cinnamon and Blue Moon. All hit the spot. Nice to see the employees all following covid protocol with the masks, too, unlike another ice cream joint over in Macomb County. *cough cough* Miller Bros Creamery * cough cough* I dig the curvy counter inside for maximum seating space, even if it can't currently be used, as well as the old Ray's sign behind it. I've never been a bigger fan of rays than in the last couple months as a pregnant girl. I went in for cookie monster which is blue moon with oreo cookies and then when I walked in the friendly staff shared that they just brought back cotton candy. OMG. This flavor is insanely delicious and tasty. It literally tastes like cotton candy, and has cotton candy bits in it with a little cotton candy on top. The cotton candy on top is spun sugar detroit , a women owned business from South Lyon how cool ? These kids are going to be seeing a lot of me over the next couple weeks for that cotton candy. read more
I ordered two flavors on the small. I ordered birthday cake and Superman, yes I still eat like I'm 7. For two flavors I ordered the small and got it for $3.50! They had a huge selection of different flavors and a ton of Michigan flavors which made me automatically love this place. The Superman ice cream reminded me of my childhood and for some reason it was especially good from here! I love it and I can't wait to try other flavors! read more
