But after a full year with no complications whatsoever, I can very confidently say that Dr. Chan is an amazing oromaxillary surgeon. I was referred to Dr. Chan by my dentist for extraction of all 4 of my wisdom teeth. When I went to the office, the staff were very pleasant. Dr. Chan had amazing bedside manner. Many physicians and dentists can be very strict and intimidating when it comes to healthcare, and I was definitely nervous as I haven't been taking very good care of my teeth. But Dr. Chan was incredibly supportive. He was objective, told me what he needed to, and explained all the risks/benefits/alternatives in great detail. Any surgery has a potential risk of side effects and complications, and wisdom teeth extraction is no different. I had read about the most common complications of wisdom teeth extraction (e.g. dry socket, swelling, pain), and I was definitely a bit scared. But I knew, for the long term well being of my teeth, this was a necessary procedure. On the day of the procedure itself, my mom was my designated driver, as I would be under moderate sedation with Versed. The nurse who started my IV was very nice, she also put a blanket on me as I felt a bit cold in the office. Dr. Chan was very nice also. Once I got the IV push of Versed I was completely out, and then I woke up with gauze in my mouth and an ice pack wrapped around my jaw. I had no swelling, no dry socket, and minimal pain that was easily controlled with Tylenol. Some of my colleagues said it didn't even look like I had any surgery done. As someone who is on the older side to get this procedure, to recover in such a straightforward manner is just proof of Dr. Chan's technique. I would highly recommend Dr. Chan to anyone needing wisdom tooth extraction. He has great bedside manner and I had no complications from having all 4 wisdom teeth removed.

However after a little while it seemed I would need a root canal as that tooth started decaying. The next dentist I was recommended to by a family friend performed the root canal and filling. This solved my tooth woes for a small period of time. The tooth was stable, but it started discoloring and turning brown. I was told by my new dentist that had bought out the practice, that I would need a crown or replacement. Only to never address or facilitate that procedure. My wife and I were recommended to Dr. Chung by her friend, and the level of professionalism and care is a fresh breath of air. After my first appointment, I was able to schedule follow up appointments for the crown work. Dr. Chung does an amazing job of talking through his procedures and comforting his patients. The reason for my 3-star rating is the pain management aspect of my experience. After surgery, I experienced severe pain that lasted nearly two weeks. During that time, I was unable to work, and could do little beyond resting and trying to manage the discomfort. I understand the doctor's position that studies show Tylenol and ibuprofen are often the most effective approach, and I also understand that stronger pain medications should be prescribed carefully. However, in my case, I felt that the severity of my pain was not taken seriously when I expressed concerns and requested additional relief. I don't think it's one size fits all, and everyone's bodies and pain tolerances are different, and I'm sure the infection I had prior to the surgery didn't help the pain aspect. The small amount of stronger pain medication I was prescribed was the only thing that provided meaningful relief, allowing me to sleep and function without being in constant distress, along with icing my face, but it did not last me enough to be able to go back to work and function, which was very frustrating. I'm in my late 20s, so perhaps my recovery was more difficult than average. Regardless, every patient experiences pain differently and recovers differently. I have full confidence in this doctor's skill and professionalism, but I wish there had been more flexibility and consideration for my individual circumstances when it came to pain management. That part of the experience has made me hesitant about returning, despite my positive impression of the doctor and the quality of the surgery itself.
