The most epic example is on Mother's Day this year, she knocked out a permanent tooth while playing. Dr Christina left her own children for hours on a Sunday/Mother's Day to come in and replant the tooth, with skill and respect for my daughter throughout the procedure. The tooth is now thriving again thanks to multiple check ups and little interventions she has done along the way! Our appointment was for our 1-year-old daughter -- a very simple visit with no X-rays or special procedures. Because I was paying out of pocket, I was supposed to be charged the full amount upfront, with insurance billing afterward for reimbursement. That did not happen. Weeks later, I received a surprise bill for over an additional hundred dollars. This was never discussed at the time of the visit and came completely out of the blue. While surprise billing is generally not allowed in California (with dentists often excluded), this felt like billing in bad faith. When I called the office to clarify, I was told I still needed to pay the balance and that because I had used a "coupon" on my first visit, I was "still getting a good deal." There was no apology, no acknowledgment of their billing mistake, and no accountability for failing to charge the correct amount initially -- just a demand for more money. I specifically chose this office instead of an in-network provider because I assumed they knew how to properly handle out-of-pocket visits. They clearly did not. Additionally, I was not given a choice regarding fluoride treatment for my daughter. She was only 1 year old, had no evidence of tooth decay, and there was no discussion about whether fluoride was necessary or optional. I believe parents should be informed and given the choice before exposing such a young child to fluoride, especially when the need is not clearly established. That conversation never happened. Overall, this experience was disappointing and frustrating. If you're considering this office -- especially if you're paying out of pocket -- be aware that you may receive unexpected bills weeks later and that important treatment decisions may be made without proper discussion or consent.

During this visit, I got a zirconia crown made after a root canal. I was impressed how quickly the crown was made at Dr. Wong's office. The process took about 1 1/2 hours. My appointment was booked for 2 hours. His assistant, Emily, was very friendly and accommodating to my personal medical needs. Dr. Wong was pleasant during the procedure. He has a calm demeanor. However, I want to share about the great care we received after our 9 year old's dental emergency. On Sunday, she fell at home and broke her front tooth--not just a chip, but a large chunk, leaving exposed nerve. After a bit of panicked searching I found the right number to call and was immediately transferred to the emergency on-call dentist. Even though Parkside was closed, in 30 minutes we were meeting with their colleague (shout out to Dr Ozzie of Danville) who took X-rays and then successfully reattached the broken piece of her tooth. She was so warm and reassuring to both me and my child. Less than 2 hours after the accident, we were headed home and my daughter was smiling again. The tooth looks great--you can't even tell there's a line unless you look very closely. Even though this dentist does not normally take our insurance, for the emergency, everything was still handled as if we had been seen directly at Parkside. I can't say what a relief it was that they had this service/partnership in place, so we did not have to worry in the midsts of the crisis! My daughter was then checked by her regular care team a few days later. Everyone was so kind and empathetic and really cared about her--they'd all seen photos of what happened. The staff also took my feedback that having to click through their menu options to find the emergency number was somewhat confusing in the moment, and within the hour messaged me that they had changed their voicemail to list the emergency number first, so future panicking parents won't be confused! I think I earned a few gray hairs from this experience, but really have nothing but positive things to say for how things were handled in the midsts of such a scary event. Thanks Parkside for being there to save my daughter's smile.
