The Burning Barrel - The dining pavilion at the farm.

    The Burning Barrel

We heard about Burning Barrel and Origin Restaurant from a friend and quickly booked tickets online…read morefor one of their first weekends of service. We were not disappointed. We arrived on the farm (after our Ford GPS took us a wonky route along a few miles of dirt road--so make sure you stay on paved roads and you won't have trouble--I was told by Kristin, our host and one of the owners, that Google Maps has no problem). I have to share our experience in detail because I feel we discovered a new must-visit experience in the KC area! We arrived at the 30-acre farm, parked in the field, and were greeted by our server who welcomed us warmly and offered us an arrival cocktail to sip while we explored the truly lovely grounds, pond, and nearby goats. After our leisurely stroll, we returned to the dining pavilion and found our seats at the gorgeous (and massive!) live-edge dining table along with a menu specifically for this weekend. Our gracious host Kristen and server brought out our first drink pairing, a minted lime seltzer that was refreshing and light. Our first course arrived--Blue Jade cornbread with arugula, sweet pea salad, and chicken liver paté. The cornbread was unlike any I had before and was absolutely delicious. The sweet pea salad was literally bursting with flavor the peas were so fresh and the chicken liver paté out of this world. Such an interesting flavor profile and combination. The next beverage pairing arrived a short time later as we enjoyed the perfect evening, a blackberry purple basil shrub. This drink was also delicious and refreshing (and save that blackberry for last--what a treat!). The Mangalista pig, we were told, is the "wagyu of pork" and the crisp, tasty, marbled pork chop was excellent. It was served with a beet "kimchi" with fennel root and a sheep cheese dumpling that was creamy and flavorful. Finally, our coffees were served and a dessert of yellow squash cake, lemon honey ice cream with mulberry compote was brought to us. Again, the dish was original, delicious, and a perfect ending to our meal. We can't wait to come back and have try a new menu in the future. Such a perfect evening and the chef has such an exciting vision for hyper-local farm-to-table flavors and dishes.

We interacted with the goats, turkeys, chickens, ducks, pigs, guard dogs and farm cats. Also wildflowers and a well-tended garden. Delightful. Then a farm-to-fork feast with paired cocktails. When a Kansas storm arrived between courses 4 and 5 - the hosts were unfazed and the hospitality continued. The chef Brian is French-trained and THE SAUCES. The agriculturalist and host Kristen is genuine and lovely. We will definitely return. Thanks for a wonderful experience.

Really, it's $15 for each one. The taste was average. I also did not like how one of the waiters came up to us and said something along the lines of "by the way we are closing in 20 minutes." However, it was a fun social thing to do and some of the wines we got were really good.

The cozy, warm ambiance of the place makes it feel like the ideal place to unwind. I started with a wine flight that included a white, Moscato, and a sweet red. While they were a bit on the dry side for my super-sweet wine preferences, they were still enjoyable. The mulled cider, however, was the real star--absolutely delicious! We also ordered some snacks to share: a pepperoni flatbread and a charcuterie board. They arrived fresh and fast, and the server took the time to explain each item on the board, making the experience even more enjoyable. Everything was top-notch and super tasty. What really stood out was the friendly, knowledgeable staff, who made sure we had everything we needed. There's also a big patio that's perfect for summer months, offering a great place to relax and enjoy the outdoors with a glass of your favorite drink. Plates and water were readily available for self-service, which was a nice touch. I'll definitely be back next time I'm in the area--such a great spot with the perfect combination of warmth, good food, and great drinks!

They…read morewere very accommodating and helped ease some nerves during the beginning stages of planning. Their responses to questions before the event were a tad delayed, in my opinion, when we were trying to gather information about the venue for decorating/planning purposes but answered our questions, nonetheless. My sister's wedding was at the beginning of November, the trees were a perfect fall color and the weather was (almost) perfect, we had a slight drizzle all day but nobody can control that the venue had more than enough space to keep everyone dry after the ceremony, especially with the partially covered deck! *ADVICE TO FUTURE BRIDES* Double and triple think about adding the "day of" coordinator to your venue package. To start, she was not present for the rehearsal the day before the event, we had a Zoom meeting, days prior, where the timeline (that we had already had for weeks and had extremely edited ourselves) was gone over ROUGHLY. When topics of concern were brought up, we were not given details to ease our nerves, the tone was more "don't worry about it, I got it". This led to multiple errors day of, grandparents were walked down stairs when they shouldn't have been, the officiant missed cues to have audience sit/stand, bridal party had no idea how to stand or position themselves at the alter. We were presented with a list of tasks that she would be handling and those were not met. The tasks included some things such as communicating and directing vendors, serving bride and groom drinks for dinner/toasts, and at the very minimum, not adding stress to the brides day. Unfortunately, those specific needs weren't met, my mother had to direct vendors and I handled the rest. The coordinator was informed to direct all questions and issues to the mother and sister of the bride and that was not adhered to. One of the bridesmaids stated "the coordinator should not be telling (bride) these things during her day, she is supposed to be calming (bride)'s nerves, not adding to them". The coordinator was very dismissive and said "don't worry about it" too many times to feel comfortable in what was going on. When you plan a wedding for many months, there is a vision that we are trying to achieve. She had no interest in hearing about that vision or helping obtain it. She never came to the planners or bride to receive the download of what is going on or what stage we were in. She arrived, immediately started touching and rearranging centerpieces before even knowing what they are supposed to look like, did a walk around and then went to lunch....after she wanted to move 10 tables "just a little bit" after they had been fully set up already, to prevent centerpiece causalities, we declined that. There were multiple lights that needed to be turned on during cocktail hour, she stated she would handle that. When we gave her the list of things to turn on, she was half paying attention and very dismissive, as if we were bothering her with the information. When we walked into the reception, half the lights were turned on. Not the vision. We were never expecting perfection, but would hope no other couple has to deal with these issues on their wedding day.
