    Risotto Alla Vecchia Milano
    Janise Q.

probably one of my favorite meals in Milan. First off, reservations, highly recommended. I got really lucky and was able to be seated without any wait in their outdoor patio right when they opened. I did see a few parties get turned away. The staff was very nice and very patient with me as I only spoke English. They introduced the menu, gave me recommendations & even let me try some wines before I settled on one that I enjoyed! I ended up getting the Risotto Alla Vecchia Milano, one of their most popular dishes and I could understand why. Super creamy and filling, very rich, but not overwhelming. If I was publicly allowed, I'd lick the plate clean. For dessert, I got the Barbajada which was perfectly sweetened. The textures of the coffee crumble added a nice touch. Overall, Ratanà is a solid choice for anyone looking to experience high-quality Milanese cuisine in a welcoming environment!

We got in last minute, our hotel called for us and got us a reservation. From the moment we walked in it was a great experience--- the host was welcoming. the inside is small and cozy, tables are closed to each other and it's romantic. The menu was one of the best I've seen because it guided you if you have dietary concerns and explained where their ingredients/wines came from. Also it's open on Sunday- many places in Europe are closed on Sunday. The food was really good and different from what I think Italian food is so we appreciated trying other Italian cuisines other than pasta/pizza. The wines selection was vast and so good!! Everything was 10/10.

We came here for dinner on a Wednesday night upon arrival in Milan for vacation. I read about this restaurant on eater, Reddit and several other sites and the Ossobuco was highly recommended. The restaurant itself had a nice ambiance with both indoor seating and a nice outdoor space. For dinner we ordered: Mondeghili (typical Milanese Meatballs) - was not expecting these to be fried, but were good. Pink asparagus - was not pink but was well cooked asparagus on a creamy cheesy base. Cold Tagliatelle with toasted Pine Nut Cream, Pesto & Chili - we almost didn't order this because the idea of cold pasta sounded unappealing, but it ended up being our favorite dish! Tomato Tartine - very rich, but also delicious Risotto alla Vecchia Milano with Veal Ossobuco Croquettes - If you are looking for something more akin to a traditional Ossobuco, I would order the Risotto alla Vecchia Milano with braised Piedmontese fassona beef. This was very good, but the ossobuco meat was in little fried meatballs. Our waiter was very helpful in talking us through the menu and the dishes were coursed out nicely and not brought out all at one time. Lovely first dinner in Milan.

This was our first meal in Italy for this trip and when you are in Milan you have a lot of choices for food. Actually a ton! We looked at so many menus it is crazy. Michelin stars are everywhere (16) as are Bib Gourmand (6) and don't forget the Mom and Pop places as well. The task was super daunting but we got through it and chose Ratana which does not have a star or BG, but it is recommended by the guide. It has a 5 course tasting menu for 70 Euro and you can add 3 or 5 wine parings for 25 or 45 respectively. The pours are petty typical here in Europe and are maybe a quarter of a glass. That is fairly small for american ideals. I got maybe 4-5 sips per pour/per course. Don't get me wrong, I have had much more expensive meals in the US with the usual american pours and had difficulty remembering what I paid so much for. Thank you ridesharing for getting us home! This restaurant is super cute and is inside what was first a movie cinema, and then had something to do with the railroads here in Milan before becoming a restaurant. There is an expansive garden to the left of the front entrance with some pretty interesting plantings in it. I did not confirm, but I do assume that most of the plants end up in the food in some way or another. Why bother otherwise? Lastly it sits in a pretty cool part of Milan. There seemed to be a ton of Americans dining here, maybe there is an expat population somewhere nearby? The food? Yeah, I will get to it. It was fabulous! This is Milanese food, so think tradition, but with a contemporary feel. We did the tasting menu and Ratana has an interesting twist to theirs. You can pick each course from their a la carte menu or let them do it. It was our first night in Italy, we were jetlagged, so we let them pick. We were brought: Peach and tomato gazpacho with Piedmont hazelnuts and basil, Courgette (zucchini) flowers stuffed with ricotta and anchovy Milanese style, with courgette cream and in scapece, Risotto alla vecchia Milano, with bone marrow, gremolata and roast sauce, vitello tonnato with Salina capers (really thinly sliced veal, with a mayonnaise and tuna sauce, and large capers), a bridging amuse, and lastly, cheesecake with hazelnut sbrisolona, and black mulberries in sorbet and coulis. The meal was delicious! I usually do not prefer to have a gazpacho since I feel like soups should be warm, but girl!!! This was delicious! Peaches and tomato just work!!! That soup was hella good! I could have eaten a bucket of it for my meal! Whoa! The stuffed zucchini flowers were fantastic! Ricotta is different here. It is velvety and light, and shares little with what we mostly get in the US. The risotto was cooked to perfection! It was maybe a slight bit past al dente, but still toothsome enough to be perfect to me. The desserts were really good too! The cheesecake was probably the best I have eaten; sorry Basque cheesecake I am not forgetting about you......you are in a different category all together. I still love you Spain! The only disappointment for me was the veal dish since it got a bit fishy, and if you have read me for long, I do not do fishy. I saw another diner push hers from her plate to her boyfriend's and I made sure to eat everything on my plate during the first three courses, so I was pretty full already. So what is the bottom line? I had a great time hanging in Italy with H.S. on our first night here, the meal was fantastic, and with only one letdown. Not a bad start at all and at a great price! I am looking forward to all that Italy has to offer! Let's do this!

We were excited to try this after watching Stanley Tucci eat here. First important note: reservation system can be a little confusing. Even though you snag a spot, your reservation is not actually confirmed until you receive a separate email confirming they accepted your request. We were unaware and when we showed up they had our information in the system but for some reason it was not actually confirmed. After a little back and forth, they were gracious enough to accommodate us at the bar. Food was absolutely delicious. Take note that portions are large which is great value. We started ehr the veal croquettes, had the creamed cod tacos, their signature Milanese risotto with bone marrow, a pasta dish that was fusion-ish with peas and kimchi! We ended with a dessert - a granita raspberry meringue crumble. It was a LOT of food for 2 ppl. Absolutely delicious. We did have a little gi upset the next day but wasn't sure if it was something we ate or the fact that we ate so much!

Make sure to request the veal cutlet when you make your reservation online! Not on the menu.

After seeing Ratana in Stanley Tucci's show I made a reservation on line and made sure to request the famous veal cutlet. Our family of 4 shared two risotto dishes and two cutlets and all the dishes surpassed our high expectations! Our server also recommended a wonderful and reasonably priced local wine to complement our meal. Thank you Ratana team! We will be back!

First time in Milan and had to try Ratana after hearing amazing things. I'm not a huge food critic but I do love trying new things and I was definitely very surprised at how good everything was! I was mainly compelled to try to veal Milanese which TIP: you must order AHEAD of time for this dish! Meaning you must call the restaurant to place the order a day or two before you come. Was it worth it? Absolutely. This was one of the best dishes I've had my entire trip and definitely memorable. Everything was just cooked to perfection and was not too oily even though it's a fried dish. The bone marrow risotto was just chefs kiss. Flavors were powerful and decadent. Something I still dream about from time to time lol. The meatballs were good but I probably wouldn't order it again because it was just okay and nothing special - still tasty. Lastly, the almond ice cream was very unique as it had a lot of bits of almond in it and was not super sweet. It was perfect to end our meal. Overall, experience was great and service was great. Beautiful restaurant and ambiance. I would come back to try different menu items!

Beautiful night out eating alfresco. This was a truly special dinner with delicious twists on traditional Italian dishes. The seasonal tomato risotto was so flavorful and the "burnt bread" with seasonal local cheese is not to be skipped. The cherry on top was that the staff were some of the friendliest most helpful people and most pleasant dining experience.

Ratana is a very good restaurant in a converted building. While the menu and cocktail list is made up of primarily northern Italian classics, Ratana has updated their versions with quality ingredients. Their risotto is outstanding. Highly recommended.

One of the finest meals we've ever had. Fresh, creative, artistry combining foods and flavours that were incredible to eat and look at. The menu is unique listing all their suppliers and locations but also a broad list of allergen information for each dish to enable diners to be informed and avoid reactions. Not pretentious, but attentive service, and attention to detail that was not overbearing, but added to the food and dining experience. We ate outside in the centre of a lively changing and interesting neighbourhood, but the inside of this converted cinema was warm and sophisticated. Wine pairings and suggestions were excellent. If you get the chance visit this resturant.

My group and I dined here tonight (Friday) and felt compelled to warn any food lovers to steer clear of Ratana. We found them as a prospect on the Michelin guide website and booked our reservation months in advance. Both my husband and friend are classically trained chefs in New York and were very much looking forward to it. We ordered Starters: - Carpaccio (good) - Milanese Meatballs (good) First Course: - risotto with red pepper sauce and chimichurri breadcrumbs (overcooked and too much thyme) - saffron risotto ossobuco (terrible; cold, over seasoned and ossobuco was undercooked) - taglioni Ragu (overseasoned) Main course: - trout with potato and butter (potatoes were definitely reheated from night before) Above all, the most astounding feature of dining at Ratana was the coldness and apathy of our waitress & staff. We felt very unwelcome/uncomfortable. I have reported this experience to the Michelin guide so other foodies are not put through the same disappointment.

Amazing food inspired by the local cuisine . The restaurant itself is a delightful little old house nested among modern buildings. The service is impeccable. I suggest a reservation in advance .

My wife and I ordered the 5 course meal, partially chose some of the courses and let the chef choose the rest. Every course was special and definitely had flavors beyond our understanding! The chef pretty much brings chemistry class to his dishes. Wifey ordered the wine tasting and they paired her wines with our courses perfectly. When I'm Milan, GO HERE!

Both tasted like they'd been frozen beforehand and were among the worst meals we've had in Italy. What made it worse was the service. We were completely ignored the entire time. When we did get served, it was no eye contact and just staring at us to tell the server what we wanted (and that was after I had to wave them down!) At first, I thought they were giving us privacy, but everyone around us had their tables cleared and were offered dessert while we sat with our finished plates for at least five minutes. When we finally got up to leave, they stopped us to offer dessert, which was a nice gesture, but by then, the experience had already soured. There was no music playing either, making the whole meal feel awkwardly silent. With so many great options in Milan, I wouldn't recommend this one.

The food was simple and delicious - we started with a Caprese salad, very nice, followed by bread that was super fresh and a heartier flavor than we had at other restaurants. For entrees we decided on seafood after so many pasta and pizza meals - we tried their grilled tuna and grilled swordfish, and both were outstanding. The tuna had a nice salt/subtle seasoning and was prepared perfectly, seared on the outside and rare on the inside. My wife's swordfish was also nicely prepared, and the portion was huge - twice the amount she expected (see photos)! And the generous portion of veggies were tasty. For dessert my wife had tiramisu and said it was among the best she had on our entire trip (and she had many!). I had a wonderful pistachio dessert with almonds on the outside that was great (forgot the name), but highly recommend it. Service was professional and prompt (no hovering, a pet peeve). As we ate, the restaurant filled with locals who all seemed to know the staff personally, creating a friendly and comfortable atmosphere with a nice family feel. We walked to the restaurant so I can't comment on parking, but the neighborhood was clean and the restaurant exterior is well-lit.
