Ratanà ended up in my top five dining locations for Milan. I almost didn't get a chance to go, but a a flight cancellation gave us an extra day in the city and this is where we spent it. Best additional detour of the trip. I found Ratana through Michelin's Bib Gourmand list which is highly rated food and reasonable prices. Chef Cesare Battisti cooks traditional Milanese and Lombard food with a modern perspective and I loved it. We did the tasting menu at lunch and the portions were genuinely generous. First they provide shared plates: whipped ricotta, smoked alpine char, zucchini olive salad, and a panzanella salad. The last one surprised me the most. I always expect panzanella to be bread-heavy. This one had almost none. It was cherry confit tomatoes, peaches, and was bright and clean. That dish alone was worth going back for. Individual courses followed. The vitello tonnato was unique (I don't normally have tuna sauce with means) and it was done well. The risotto alla Milanese was homy and savory as the traditional Milan dish. Dessert was a summer panettone with candied apricots, summer fruit, and rosemary. This was my first time trying Panettone. Ive seen it everywhere but never actually consumed any. The Panettone was light but rich in baking spices and fruit forward flavor. It paired well with the apricot sorbet served along side. The wine list leans natural, not always my thing, so I skipped the pairing and ordered a local sparkling to start and a heartier red with the meal. If you are looking to go, make sure to book early. We were lucky to get a 2:30pm slot at lunch to try out this menu. The kitchen is open for lunch through 4 pm and then dunner starts back up at 6:00pm. read more

We loved our experience here! We reserved a week ahead of time for dinner at 7:30. The specialty is risotto, which Milan is well known for. I would recommend sitting inside at this place - it's located right by / inside a children's playground, so it is quieter inside. My friend got poultry - it was not spicy but savory. It was very flavorful and good. My other friend got strawberry risotto, which was mostly savory with hints of sweetness from strawberries (but not overly sweet). The balsamic vinegar undercuts the sweetness from the strawberries, making it a perfect pairing. Our milanese risotto came from bone marrow. This was a delicious dish, the risotto was cooked very well and the marrow was so easy to scrape off. It was amazing. Probably skip the breadsticks. 5/5 stars. Would recommend. Absolutely loved! This was our first night in Milan for our honeymoon and Ratana kicked off our trip to a great start! We both got risotto and they were the best we had our entire trip. He had a lemonade which compared to what we get back and home, he said it was the best he's had - fresh squeezed and perfect. I had a gin sour and it was SO good! The ingredients aren't what you'd typically get in a gin sour but I don't think any will compare now. Everyone was so nice and friendly - I don't speak Italian well so we were nervous about the language barrier on our first night and it was never an issue, nor did we feel out of place or anything other than at home. I saw mixed views for Ratana but also noticed a lot of publications saying that it was definitely a must visit. And super glad I did! Would definitely recommend this for anyone looking for a wonderfully well-rounded meal. I did reserve in advance and believe at least the day of that it did run out of reservations. The interior is lovely and has both a bar area and tables. The exterior is super cozy and is next to famous sights like the Bosco Verticale which makes it super nice to just walk about before or after dinner. Coming in, the servers and bartender were super friendly. Being in the corner of the restaurant at the bar was interesting in and of itself where I got to see drinks being made; tons of awards and cooking books; and lots of other fun little trinkets. It may be a bit messy for some but was pure entertainment for me. Let's get to the food! There is an a la carte menu but I opted to go with the tasting menu which I wanted since this was my first visit. Here's what ended up in my dinner: *Negroi: I funny enough didn't have a negroni yet during my Milan visit so had my first one here. It was excellent. Not too sweet. *Local trout carpaccio: A wonderful opener. Loved the description and the olive oil that was utilized. A little sweet with great textures. *Classic Milanese risotto with bone marrow: I loved finally getting to try the Milanese risotto which I thought was delicious. I did personally think the bone marrow was an okay addition. It was a pretty small piece and didn't add as much flavor. *Duck + fried duck fat: A super delicious duck dish - well-cooked and not overly gamey. Loved the polenta and the fried duck fat on the side. *Strawberry mousse: I thought this was the final dessert and thought it was lovely. It was one of the prettiest dishes of the night and cracked open to showcase so much flavor. *Sorrento lemon tart: Loved the locally sourced dishes and having it called out. Thought this lemon tart was solid along with the beautiful meringue. The total came out to be around 70ish euros I believe with additional wine pairings available. probably one of my favorite meals in Milan. First off, reservations, highly recommended. I got really lucky and was able to be seated without any wait in their outdoor patio right when they opened. I did see a few parties get turned away. The staff was very nice and very patient with me as I only spoke English. They introduced the menu, gave me recommendations & even let me try some wines before I settled on one that I enjoyed! I ended up getting the Risotto Alla Vecchia Milano, one of their most popular dishes and I could understand why. Super creamy and filling, very rich, but not overwhelming. We got in last minute, our hotel called for us and got us a reservation. From the moment we walked in it was a great experience--- the host was welcoming. the inside is small and cozy, tables are closed to each other and it's romantic. The menu was one of the best I've seen because it guided you if you have dietary concerns and explained where their ingredients/wines came from. Also it's open on Sunday- many places in Europe are closed on Sunday. Pink asparagus - was not pink but was well cooked asparagus on a creamy cheesy base. Cold Tagliatelle with toasted Pine Nut Cream, Pesto & Chili - we almost didn't order this because the idea of cold pasta sounded unappealing, but it ended up being our favorite dish! Tomato Tartine - very rich, but also delicious Risotto alla Vecchia Milano with Veal Ossobuco Croquettes - If you are looking for something more akin to a traditional Ossobuco, I would order the Risotto alla Vecchia Milano with braised Piedmontese fassona beef. This was very good, but the ossobuco meat was in little fried meatballs. The restaurant is situated next to a small park where the kids were able to play part of the time while the adults enjoyed their meal so that was great. However, be sure you use mosquito repellant if you are outside - the restaurant had some for us. The dish were expertly prepared - some classics and some more modern renditions. This was our first meal in Italy for this trip and when you are in Milan you have a lot of choices for food. Actually a ton! We looked at so many menus it is crazy. Michelin stars are everywhere (16) as are Bib Gourmand (6) and don't forget the Mom and Pop places as well. The task was super daunting but we got through it and chose Ratana which does not have a star or BG, but it is recommended by the guide. It has a 5 course tasting menu for 70 Euro and you can add 3 or 5 wine parings for 25 or 45 respectively. The pours are petty typical here in Europe and are maybe a quarter of a glass. That is fairly small for american ideals. I got maybe 4-5 sips per pour/per course. Don't get me wrong, I have had much more expensive meals in the US with the usual american pours and had difficulty remembering what I paid so much for. Thank you ridesharing for getting us home! This restaurant is super cute and is inside what was first a movie cinema, and then had something to do with the railroads here in Milan before becoming a restaurant. There is an expansive garden to the left of the front entrance with some pretty interesting plantings in it. I did not confirm, but I do assume that most of the plants end up in the food in some way or another. Why bother otherwise? Lastly it sits in a pretty cool part of Milan. There seemed to be a ton of Americans dining here, maybe there is an expat population somewhere nearby? The food? Yeah, I will get to it. It was fabulous! This is Milanese food, so think tradition, but with a contemporary feel. We did the tasting menu and Ratana has an interesting twist to theirs. You can pick each course from their a la carte menu or let them do it. It was our first night in Italy, we were jetlagged, so we let them pick. We were brought: Peach and tomato gazpacho with Piedmont hazelnuts and basil, Courgette (zucchini) flowers stuffed with ricotta and anchovy Milanese style, with courgette cream and in scapece, Risotto alla vecchia Milano, with bone marrow, gremolata and roast sauce, vitello tonnato with Salina capers (really thinly sliced veal, with a mayonnaise and tuna sauce, and large capers), a bridging amuse, and lastly, cheesecake with hazelnut sbrisolona, and black mulberries in sorbet and coulis. The meal was delicious! I usually do not prefer to have a gazpacho since I feel like soups should be warm, but girl!!! This was delicious! Peaches and tomato just work!!! That soup was hella good! I could have eaten a bucket of it for my meal! Whoa! The stuffed zucchini flowers were fantastic! Ricotta is different here. It is velvety and light, and shares little with what we mostly get in the US. The risotto was cooked to perfection! It was maybe a slight bit past al dente, but still toothsome enough to be perfect to me. The desserts were really good too! The cheesecake was probably the best I have eaten; sorry Basque cheesecake I am not forgetting about you......you are in a different category all together. I still love you Spain! The only disappointment for me was the veal dish since it got a bit fishy, and if you have read me for long, I do not do fishy. I saw another diner push hers from her plate to her boyfriend's and I made sure to eat everything on my plate during the first three courses, so I was pretty full already. So what is the bottom line? First time in Milan and had to try Ratana after hearing amazing things. I'm not a huge food critic but I do love trying new things and I was definitely very surprised at how good everything was! I was mainly compelled to try to veal Milanese which TIP: you must order AHEAD of time for this dish! Meaning you must call the restaurant to place the order a day or two before you come. Was it worth it? Absolutely. This was one of the best dishes I've had my entire trip and definitely memorable. Everything was just cooked to perfection and was not too oily even though it's a fried dish. The bone marrow risotto was just chefs kiss. Flavors were powerful and decadent. Something I still dream about from time to time lol. The meatballs were good but I probably wouldn't order it again because it was just okay and nothing special - still tasty. We were excited to try this after watching Stanley Tucci eat here. First important note: reservation system can be a little confusing. Even though you snag a spot, your reservation is not actually confirmed until you receive a separate email confirming they accepted your request. We were unaware and when we showed up they had our information in the system but for some reason it was not actually confirmed. After a little back and forth, they were gracious enough to accommodate us at the bar. Food was absolutely delicious. Take note that portions are large which is great value. Eschewing white tablecloths and Tuxedoed service, a team of women in jeans and hirsuit young men bustling around for patrons wearing everything from t-shirts to three-piece suits, entry to Ratana sees patrons face-to-face with a scene more Venice California than the one a couple hours eastward, a tight bar and high ceilings reverberating overhead modern music with a dining room decorated in wood sporting closely packed tables. Having made reservations, but treated as a walk-in with a two-top at the room's center soon mine for the duration of a ninety minute stay, it was from a menu that changes daily in hand that options were deliberated, an original request for three plates deemed to be "too much" by one man, the housemade Headcheese reluctantly omitted and instead replaced by a duo of desserts. More than a little impressed by the warm bag of Bread, both Sourdough and Sesame options warm and robust with a dense crumb, course one saw the kitchen send forth creamy pockets of Pasta stuffed with Citrus-scented Ricotta, the Tomato enhanced by a touch of smoke with texture added by toasted Bread Crust, the follow-up Risotto making sense of the server's comments regarding portion, though the complex mélange of sweet, salty and sour with crunchy Pistachios was so varied and beautiful that the deep bowl in no way seemed to be "too much." Unable to decide on just one dessert, all five offered actually sounding quite great, it was after much indecision that the two most intriguing compositions were optioned for, a pull of Single Origin Espresso pairing well with the flavor of Grapes and Cider but even better with the inspired Vegan-Friendly spread of subtly sweetened Chickpeas and Zucchini Blossom with a nose of Black Truffles and crumbled Shortbread. read more

Probably the easiest 5* ever. In architectural terms 'Aesthetic paradise' .....It is the 'Bright White' in contrast to the modern stark dark White that surrounds it but it is so much more than that. Its location alone justifies its existence smack bang in the middle of Porta Nuova and a short walk from Garibaldi Station. Milano cusine at it's best and an oasis of culinary style in the midst of other modern con-fusion menus .... if Ratanà had a musical equivalent it would be a duet by Ray LaMontagne & Adele. Not cheap but you get what you pay for and their Wine list is a Sommeliers dream littered with fine Chianti, Barolo & 'spumantizzavano' you would be hard put to find all in one place at any given time including a 2006 Chianti Classico Riserva Poggio delle Rose!! Their menus are well thought out and always changing. My favourites were the Risotto dishes and Oggi cassoeula Milanese but don't miss out on the Chocolate Ganache or the Crema di mascarpone e ofelle I could dizzy you with superlatives but the only way you will get how good it is, is to be here and feel it for yourself. We didn't have reservations when we walked in and I'm so glad they decided to take us for dinner! Ratana was my favorite meal during my trip to Milan & Switzerland. We started off with a bottle of wine recommended by the hostess (and not the most expensive bottle on the vast list they had!) while we waited for our table. We landed on each having the chef's tasting menu for 45€ per person for 4 plates and a dessert. The cream of broccoli risotto was my favorite dish! The rice was perfectly cooked and the color was a gorgeous green. The main, which was a grilled chicken breast on top of greens was interesting. Very simple, but the chicken was sweet and the greens were slightly bitter..it just made for an interesting combination for my taste buds. Solid meal in Milan - I would have to say my favorite out of all the meals I had in Milan. We came in on a Sunday evening and the restaurant was packed! Thankfully, the hostess said it would only be a short wait and we made our way to the bar. She recommended a delicious bottle of white to start us off. The overall meal was perfect. Service was on point. They offered a chef's tasting menu for 45 euros and this is definitely the way to go. You get to try a little bit of everything and you will be happily stuffed at the end. Ratana is slightly off the beaten track - it's a little further out from the Duomo/touristy areas but well worth the trek. read more
