Fantastic time! We went fishing with Captain Kamal and Deckhand Chad in late April. We booked a 6 hour private charter with them and loved every minute. This type of fishing is challenging in that its a big big ocean and its not easy to find the fish. That being said, we had a really really great day! It started off slow but the water conditions were phenomenal, allowing us to get ~40 miles off shore into 6000 feet deep water. We brought in a couple small yellowfin tuna and then everything else turned on! Our day finished with 5 small yellowfin tuna, 1 medium sized yellowfin, and then 1 larger (nearly ahi) yellowfin tuna, 2 skipjacks, an Ono or Wahoo, and the highly sought after short-nosed bill spearfish! Kamal and Chad were both awesome and I feel that I need to describe Kamal as an addict to fishing. The dude wants to land fish and he will try whatever he can to get you there. The boat is comfortable and the length of it helps provide for a smooth ride on the sea. I highly recommend Rascal Charters to fisher-men and women as well as those who don't really no what they are doing around a fishing pole. This was a terrible experience for my family. I emailed Charlie 3 times to confirm that we could break up our private charter into reef fishing, trolling and then finish with reef fishing due to having young kids on the boat. I even told him about a past experience where the captain told us no because they didn't have the equipment to accommodate the request. He assured me this would not be an issue and to ask the captain when we arrived. Guess what, exactly what I didn't want to happen, happened. The captain told us no and we spent 8 hours trolling, kids sleeping or getting sick and zero fish caught. I feel lied to and stolen from. Terrible experience! read more

I'm gonna keep it short and simple. The crew was friendly, the boat was nice, but something was lacking. Our trip was expensive and they were the professionals, but there seems to be a trend in their in ability to perform. I'm an avid fisherman and, even though this is only me second deep sea trip, I could tell something was strange. I have been and know the odds of being skunked on a 4 hr or less trip, but how do professional anglers who do this everyday go 8hrs without even a nibble! It may have just been bad luck but we cruised the same circle for 4 hours. Never once tried any sort of live or dead bait, it was insane. (Doing the same thing over and over again but expecting different results.) Hands down worst trip I've ever been on and a black eye on my family's hawaii trip. Do your research and shop around, even if it cost an extra 1k$ dollars, expensive fish is better than no fish! read more

After discussing with my teenage son and his friends, all avid fishermen, what kind of fishing trip they would like to have, we landed on a 'bottom fishing' trip. We knew before booking the trip that having rods in our hands and the action of reeling up (fish or no fish) was to be a much more valuable experience to us than a 'sport fishing' experience....which my son and his friends seen as driving around the ocean with lines out the back of the boat. We booked a 'bottom fishing' trip with Rascal Charters. Having a lengthy conversation with the boat owner (Charlie) when booking the boat, we were to do a little 'sport fishing' to and from the locations of the 'bottom fishing' and spend the majority of the day 'bottom fishing' When arriving at the boat we had another conversation with the deck had, who offered up "you're here for a 'combo' fishing trip right?". With which we responded, "yes, but with a focus on the 'bottom fishing', the 'sport fishing' is to be just to and from the 'bottom fishing' grounds".... which he appeared to understand and agree with. The captain made an appearance to introduce himself, but it was brief. 3 hours later, driving around the ocean with 5+ lines out the back, with our teenager and his friends sleeping in the cabin off and on, and listening to the captain shout orders at the deck hand to change out baits, we started to ask the deck hand about the 'bottom fishing' portion of the trip. Things got tense! The deck hand did not know what to do, he would go up and talk to the captain and then come down and tell us something like "the captain sees something floating, he wants to take a couple loops around it and try to put us on a fish". After this type of exchange happened a number of times, I essentially had to 'demand' we get to the 'bottom fishing' We arrived to what was presumably the bottom fishing grounds, there were two rods on the boat prepared for bottom fishing (with 5 of us guests on the boat). We drop the two lines, no sooner did they hit bottom, the captain yelled to reel them in he needs to reposition the boat. This happened twice... meaning we drop two lines three times. Then the captain said we're out of time we have to get back to the docks before our 6 hour trip was up. The day was not pleasant, it was tense! Although the deck hand (Chris) worked hard all day at the demands of the captain (Kamal). Kamal was highly unlikable and unpleasant to be around. Just so it is clear, this review has nothing to do with the quantity or size of fish caught, we understand there are good days and bad days fishing, this review is about not getting the trip we booked and getting the exact trip we intentionally were avoiding. The problem here was the captain had no intentions of bottom fishing, this was the captains 'sport' fishing trip, NOT the 'bottom' fishing trip we booked and paid for. What was supposed to be the highlight of our vacation, proved to be an absolute waste of money. 6 hours of driving around the ocean whilst my teenage son and his friends slept in the cabin.... exactly what we're trying to prevent by booking a 'bottom fishing' trip. We get back to the docks and the captain is aggressively 'fishing' for gratuity, uncomfortably so. Based on the horrible experience of the day, we chose to not to provide any. Shortly after we get a text from an unknown number "You are not welcome on Maui, don't come back"....because we know how the internet works, we quickly were able to determine this note was from the captain (Kamal). Just proves the unpleasant type of person you will be spending the day with if you book with Rascal charters. Don't waste your money on this charter! read more

A few members of my family and I recently went through rascal charters for our fishing excursion. Unfortunately for us, the fish weren't hungry that day! However, we still had an amazing day out on the water with Capt. Kamal and Andy! They made our trip a great one. They were both very knowledgeable about the waters we were fishing and Maui as a whole! We did a shared boat 6 hour trip with captain joe and deckhand Andy. Our experience was spectacular. We left the dock right on time after a brief introduction with the captain. Following his deck duties Andy introduced himself and went over all the necessary information as we trolled out to the fishing grounds. Andy was busy as can be handling 6 rods and still conversing with and getting to know each person on the boat. We ended the day with 5 wahoo (ono) and 2 lost bites. Every person on the boat got a chance on the rod. (Understand when booking/reviewing) fishing especially in deep water is like hunting and while the objective is to catch fish it is far from an guarantee). read more

We had a great day. Captain and owner Kevin was awesome and crewmember Jordan was great too. Anytime you Charter about you never know if you're going to catch something you just hope the experience is awesome and all five of us had a great time. The captain you some great spots and kept moving us around so we made sure we caught fish. We took home half of each fish world's it up on the barbecue and it was awesome. Don't waste your time or $$ on this boat or with this Captain..Not only did we not touch a fishing pole, this captain pulled the bait onboard and rushed back to the harbor to catch the world series game 1..he was wearing a Detroit Tigers hat...hmmm ? Total waste of $500..I know, I know its called fishing, not catching. But anyone can feel when you just got half-assed by the captain..When you have not caught a single fish for a full boat of anglers and then pull bait in and rush to get everyone off your boat so you can watch a baseball game, you suck !! The distance traveled, the time and money spent, was not to my liking. I have been on many charters, and many fishing trips, this was the least accommodating to the customer. Costco water or snacks would be nice. I felt like I was on a date in a taxi. Until then, get rid of the sign reminding customers that it is customary to tip the captain and crew. Perhaps acquiring some bottom fish to take away, would have been in order, instead of running to shore with nothing more then the memory of one person's, "catch and release" marlin previously caught in the day. Extra star for a clean boat, knowledgeable captain, and helpful deckhand. I honestly think that the boat fishing here in Maui is like everything else, expensive, overpriced, tourist oriented, and beautifully pleasant for the ladies. read more

My husband and I took his father on this fishing charter trip in hopes of a great experience. My husband is a Fish and Game Warden and likes to fish on his time off. We thought we did our research prior to leaving for our vacation to Maui. In hindsight, we should have researched more thoroughly. For $225 per person ($675 for the three of us..) we felt as if no effort was being made. We were out for 6 hours and not once, realizing that the fish were not biting, did they attempt to move to another location or check the lines. We are easy to please in means of being customers and this was by far the worst fishing charter I have ever been on. We had to bring our own food and drink (not even water was provided). Everyone has to realize that they or others on the boat may not catch a fish. However, the captain needs to entertain the customers by at least attempting to make an effort- pull the lines out, change the lures, or flat out MAKE IT LOOK LIKE THEY HAVE DONE ALL THEY COULD DO!!! My objective of this review it to make it known that there are many fishing charters on Maui that are awesome and fun. Please do not make the same mistake my husband and I made by booking this charter for half of a day and $675 that we cannot reverse. The only time we saw the captain was in the beginning when we paid and at the end expecting a tip! In between we inhaled cigarette smoke and was not approached at all. I generally don't like to complain. However, after talking with friends and family- I was encouraged to post my experience in hopes to detour others. read more

Captain Kamal was nasty, confrontational and inappropriate with elderly and children. Boat was old, dirty and dilapidated. Horrible customer service by booking agent Fish Maui. Don't even provide water--you're on your own! I have chartered fishing trips all over the world and this is by far the worst operation I have ever experienced. read more

My husband and I chartered Rascal for an 8 hour fishing expedition. The boat and crew were amazing. Kamal and Andy were great and they did everything possible to put us on the meat. In the end we caught two nice Mahi Mahi. When we got to Maui went went down to the docks and talked with a couple of the charter boats to get information about fishing and how the catch was going. We ended up choosing Rascal because of their friendly nature and their honesty about what was being caught. The other boat Captain didn't even come out to talk to us. We knew that it had been slow, but it was my 60th birthday, and being been given the choice between jewelry or fishing, I chose fishng. Andy was constantly moving the entire time maintaining all the lines as Kamal traversed the ocean searching for fish.  We would not hesitate to hire Rascal on a return trip to Maui. If you want to have a great, fun memorable day sport fishing, then Rascal is your best choice. read more
