I was told when I set the appt date that there would be faucets on the truck for me to choose. Two workers showed up with no faucet. The information provided to me was wrong. I received pictures on the 30th asking me to choose a faucet. I did on Oct 1. Reminded them again on the 4th. The delays continued with (oh, my apologies response). Scheduled for October 21 at 11:30ish. I sent a reminder of the appt date and time on Oct 17th. On October 21 two fellows showed up at 1:30 - with the wrong type of faucet. Three weeks back & forth and they still had it wrong. The office called me to say they had contacted the manufacturer & they could order the necessary part. I told her to forget about it, I would go elsewhere. I called another plumbing firm on the 21st. I just thanked the one employee for my new faucet (came early and was here for 45 minutes). Price was reasonable for the scope and system specs, and James was extremely responsive and patient throughout the whole process. We also really appreciate James's help coordinating with MassSave (including some truly terrible inspections), ultimately enabling us to claim our full rebate. I'd highly recommend working with James, and we will continue to reach out to him for all our HVAC needs!

After a 3-yr search and MANY bids for a new HVAC, we settled on James Wu, who installed our system…read morelast month and proved the research paid off. Below are things I wanted to know before choosing a contractor; maybe it will be helpful for you. Our situation: 100+ yr old home with current boiler in basement. We recently insulated our walk-up attic - that would both freeze and melt items stored there - with closed-cell spray foam (more research there), added drywall and will use it for storage. This is where the air handler and ERV (for ventilation) went. Our upstairs is now ducted, with one vent running through a closet on the 2nd floor to 1st floor. We also added a Mitsibishi floor mount unit and a ceiling cassette on 1st floor. So, we had a VARIETY of equipment installed, requiring a contractor experienced in not only ducting, but mini-split installs with both a ceiling cassette and floor mount unit. We did not want the large wall mount mini split units. Our walls/ceilings are PLASTER, (metal wire mesh and cement-based): cutting them is a JOB. And, we wanted the floor mount unit RECESSED. COST - James was in-line with our other bids, which came in between 27k and 39k, largely depending on equipment recommended, with ceiling cassettes costing more. Many contractors simply would not install them, and wanted to run ducts in the corners of all upstairs rooms to first floor, which to us was a last resort. COMMUNICATION - James is very responsive to texts, emails, and even more importantly, he is a fantastic communicator. He is very calm, not pushy, explains things in an easy-to-understand way that clearly shows he knows his business. I actually told my husband after he left for the first time, "I think we may have found our guy" just based on his personality and knowledge. He's likeable, which isn't a requirement, but definitely helps. EXPERTISE - This is what truly sets James apart. Our needs were fairly complex, requiring interior ducting, 2 outside units with exterior line sets, and recessed ceiling units, but also RECESSING the inside floor unit into an interior wall. We've overseen several renovation projects recently and could tell these guys knew what they were doing. Also, they were perfectionists, and paid attention to details you don't often find with contractors. DEPENDABILITY - Not a single missed appt. Showed up on time with clear communication. The job took a week. He also helped with Masssave paperwork. They cleaned up after themselves each day, which we appreciated. KNOWLEDGE - Extremely versed in Mitsibishi equipment. He's a Diamond Contractor, which extends our warranty, but we'd have chosen him regardless. Every question I had about these units (cassette and floor unit operation, air handler, ERV, outdoor units, thermostats...) he knew the answer to. When I researched anything specific online, from multiple and trusted sources, I found the info he'd given me to be correct. I trust his knowledge and I don't automatically do that. One example: our ceiling cassette has an internal thermostat and it's off by several degrees regularly. I researched it and found we likely need an external thermostat separate from the unit to measure the room's temp. I texted James a photo showing the inaccurate reading and his immediate reply, "you need an external thermostat. I'll install one." That's what I'm talking about. INTEGRITY - Example: After the permit inspector left, James explained his philosophy on inspections. Each city apparently has different requirements. He learned several years ago how strict one particular city was, requiring a blower test to determine air tightness and the passing score was 4% or less. He got 4.1% and city wouldn't pass it. This required a lot more time/energy to go through everything and another test and more $$. So, now James says to his guys, "We install to the strictest inspection every time, regardless of the specific city's requirements, so we don't ever have to redo anything." In our case, the city didn't need a blower test but if they did, I feel confident we would have passed! I don't often take time to write reviews, esp this lengthly, but I felt it was warranted here. Finding an HVAC contractor is HARD; it's time-consuming and complicated. And a lot of money. Three years of research finally led us to James and now, looking back, it was worth the wait and headaches in research. I would highly recommend anyone in the market for a new HVAC, especially if it involves Mitsibishi and especially ESPECIALLY if it involves recessing any equipment like ceiling cassettes or wall units, to consider James Wu. He and his team are uniquely skilled in their work.

WARNING: Two Years Without Service, Then an Unexpected $916 Oil Delivery and a Threat of Small…read moreClaims Court I strongly encourage Massachusetts homeowners to think twice before signing up with MacFarlane Energy, particularly for its automatic oil delivery and Value Plan. I became a customer in 2022. My last oil delivery was March 18, 2024, and my last annual boiler tune-up was February 9, 2024. For approximately TWO YEARS, MacFarlane made no deliveries, performed no annual maintenance and never once contacted me about my account. Its own Value Plan documentation explicitly includes an annual heating-system tune-up, yet I received no further tune-ups. During that time, I began purchasing oil elsewhere to keep my tank above 50%. After nearly two years without deliveries, maintenance or communication, I reasonably believed my relationship with MacFarlane had ended. Then, on March 26, 2026, MacFarlane unexpectedly delivered 152 gallons of oil at approximately $6.03 per gallon, charging me $916.84 during a period of extremely high oil prices. No advance phone call, no email and no opportunity to decline the delivery or its price. Now MacFarlane is demanding $971.84 and has escalated the dispute toward small claims court. I dispute these outrageous charges. Why should a company be able to go nearly two years without providing the annual maintenance included in its service plan, never communicate with its customer, then suddenly resume deliveries and demand nearly $1,000? I believe MacFarlane's handling of my account raises serious concerns under Massachusetts Chapter 93A, which prohibits unfair or deceptive business practices. I intend to pursue the appropriate consumer-protection channels. I have retained my invoices, service-plan documentation, account records and correspondence to substantiate my experience. MY WARNING TO HOMEOWNERS: Do not assume that years without deliveries, maintenance or communication mean MacFarlane has closed your account. Read every cancellation provision, get everything in writing and make sure you're actually receiving the services promised in your contract. They will show up and fill your tank without talking to you in 2 years or without any warning. Based on my experience, I would never recommend MacFarlane Energy. I believe its handling of my account, its failure to provide annual maintenance and its response to this billing dispute are completely unacceptable.

In the current fast-moving real estate market, a decision had to be made quickly. It was late on a bitter cold Saturday afternoon on a 3-day weekend in January and we were at a house in northern Vermont trying to figure out whom we could call who might be able to advise us. Woodacre Fuel & HVAC have taken care of our heating and cooling systems at our home in the Boston suburbs meticulously for many years. They have always given us honest and practical advice and all aspects of their service is first rate. They are available to help their customers 24/7. We know this first-hand because during both bitter cold spells and scorching heat waves, Wes, Doug and the Woodacre Team have been there for our family. So, taking a long-shot, we called Woodacre Fuel & HVAC's office and left a brief message asking for advice. We had an e-mail back from Wes Woodacre within 3 minutes and a phone call too. He offered clear explanations on how a particular type of heating system works and advice on replacement with a rough, ball-park cost estimate. Wes was extraordinarily helpful and we appreciated this beyond words. This experience has highlighted for us what is unique and special about the best Family-Owned Businesses - there is a level of honest and sincere concern and caring for customers and their families that you do not get from a larger company. Woodacre Fuel and HVAC is a Family-Owned Business in the absolute best sense of the words.

On their first visit they were quick to tell me I needed a new water heater and new motor. Quoted $800 for the motor and said it would likely arrive in 2-3 days. I later looked up the average cost of motor replacement and it was half what they quoted ($400). Nevertheless, I tried to do right by this business and called twice to check on order status. Each day we had no hot water and substandard heat with toddlers in the house... Eventually a whole week went by and I called urgently when the fire alarm started going off and thought it might have to do with the furnace. The owner was upset that I had used another oil supplier in the meantime and said he honestly didn't care what happened to me or my family, and I could forget them finishing the original job I had hired them for.
