The staff is very helpful. I originally call to San Carlo's store by mistake by they pass the information to Palo Alto store. They accommodated our group lunch of 30 with flexibility of order by our own (other restaurants ask for Prix-Fixe menus). Although we sit in 2 long tables but were able to order by small group to share. The food were all goods. We have Tea Leaf Salad, Basil Chili Beef, Mix vegetables Curry, Salt & Pepper Calamari, Chicken Pad Thai. Remember to order coconut rice. Don't forget the dessert. This is one of the few Burmese places in the Bay Area, and overall, the quality was kind of mid. I ordered the pad thai and samosas. The taste for both dishes was probably average for these dishes, but worse than comparable items at Thai or Indian restaurants in the area. I'll note that the portions were surprisingly big, I ended up splitting these two dishes and I was still very full afterwards, so keep that in mind when ordering. The menu is accessed through a QR code with ordering done online, and so the service wasn't great. Would recommend finding a different place that offers similar menu items. read more

The ambiance was really nice, but unfortunately the food and service...not so much. Food wise, it's great to share with friends and family. I really enjoyed the palata appetizer and sooji with ice cream dessert. Didn't enjoy the tea leaf salad, Rangoon chicken curry and the pad thai was alright. Overall, I've had better Burmese food elsewhere. Service wise, The waiter -took a long time to serve our drinks -gave us the wrong order (chicken pad Thai instead of shrimp) and did not change the order until much, much later -it was my birthday, which we told them and they forgot to give me the cool flickering candle :(--really put a damper on things. It's located at a very pleasant and happening part of Palo Alto. The restaurant vibe is good and has options to sit inside or outside. The service is prompt and pretty polite. The food is also very good in taste and flavorful. We tried Samosa and Palata with veg Curry for small plates which was very tasty. For main dish, we tried Garlic noodles with chicken and Mango chicken. Noodles were good enough spicy to complement Mango chicken which was sweet-spicy mixture. Overall it was a good experience with the only exception - quantity. Compared to prices, the quantity seems a bit less but maybe the food itself shrouds that fact makes you want to eat more. read more

Not only was the food delicious, but the service was also incredible. We ordered the tea salad (with cabbage), the samosa soup, garlic noodle with tofu and the lamb kebat. The samosa soup wasn't the best, but each of the other dishes were amazing, and satisfied a diverse set of palates. Additionally, we asked for one dish to be made without jalepeno for spice reasons, and the staff made sure to come out and personally ask if it was for spice or for an allergen reason, in which case they suggested a different dish. It was also the night of my graduation, and upon seeing my graduation gown, they brought out ice cream as a free treat. All in all, experience was wonderful, and I would suggest this as a great dinner place for any occasion. read more

I will start off with service, it was bad to say the least. She left us with menus and did not check on us for 10 mins and when she arrived she asked if we were ready to order and then never showed up after that. After the food was brought from the kitchen by the server , she did not come once to check if we needed anything. I should have left her with no tip. After we finished our food she just came up asked if we were done then removed our plates and then brought our check and left again. This place has a great vibe and John, the owner is always there to greet people checking in. This is by far the best place to have Burmese cuisine. I thoroughly enjoyed the chicken palatas, samosa soup. The minced jalapeño chicken was my pick along with the chili basil lamb. Overall the menu is vast and won't disappoint the ones visiting. We somehow got lucky and got a table without a reservation (s/o to my date for never being prepared). We ordered drinks and got the garlic noodles and red curry for food :) Okay firstly I'd like to say, the coconut rice is PHENOMENAL! It went really well with the red curry and I highly recommend it. I seriously dread giving 1 star reviews but our experience here really wasn't great... buckle up for a story! We visited Rangoon Ruby on my birthday (March 8). The maitre d was stern and focused on getting people seated. She exuded a confidence that let us know she was going to make this happen. We did not have a reservation so it was awesome she was able to get us a table without a hitch. It felt like things were off to a great start. -or so I thought! -__-'' Just as we were seated, the water guy came by to give us our waters and accidentally spilled water all over me and my phone. Water got all over both of my pants legs and down into my shoes. We haven't even ordered yet and I've got water in my shoes. Socks, squishy. The water guy came by with some rags to clean up the rest of the water and handed me some napkins to dry myself off. White paper napkins for black pants made for a linty situation. The dude quickly left and made like nothing happened and we didn't see him again for the rest of the night. I've never had anything spilled on me when dining out, so this was a first. Maybe it's good luck to have water spilled all over you on your birthday? I tried to laugh it off because I didn't want my bf to feel bad but this was pretty off-putting. This was especially off-putting since I haven't really been going out since Covid and this was one of the rare occasions where I was actually dining INside. I had hoped maybe someone else like a manager would come by to apologize for this unfortunate incident but it was as if nothing happened during the rest of our time here. Seriously!? Honestly, we would considered leaving after the water spill incident but it was getting late and didn't feel like picking another place to eat, especially since we were already seated. We ordered the tea leaf salad and garlic noodles with tofu using the barcode block found at the table. After we ordered, I went to the bathroom to attempt to dry my wet pants of under the hand-dryer. After spending waaaaaaay too long in the bathroom attempting to dry my black pants covered in white paper napkin lint, I returned to my table with slightly-less-damp pant legs and a long line forming outside the bathroom from me frantically trying to dry myself off. And now the lint was really plastered on to my pants. The food came eventually and the server who brought out the tea leaf salad was really friendly, explaining what the tea leaf salad was etc etc as she gently mixed the salad. Before she left, I had asked if she could bring by some hot water since I was getting cold from the damp pants and wet sock situation. Thankfully the hot water delivery was just about the only thing that went right during our visit. The garlic noodles were pretty bland. Not very garlicky (or at all) for something called Garlic Noodles, but at least the noodles had good texture. Maybe there was more shallot oil (I think?) than garlic, but even stating that is a huge stretch. The fixins were pretty sparse too. There were 4 medium-sized broccoli florets that were blanched separately then thrown into the noodles. They were not seasoned. I don't know if that was intentional or if they were supposed to be garlicky, but they definitely only helped to detract from the already garlic-deficient noodle dish. There were also some julienned cucumbers and fried tofu cubes. Everything overall was pretty disappointing. I felt pretty let down that THIS was the first place where I dined indoors so far this year. The only enjoyable part about this meal was the company, my poor boyfriend, who picked this place and was pretty unhappy about how everything was handled too. Did I mention that you are asked to tip with the contactless app BEFORE any food is brought out to you? We opted to hold off in case we wanted to order more, then we could add the tip to the second order after we had a chance to experience their service as the rest of our visit went on. Needless to say, the service was pretty lousy with or without the water spill. To add more insult to injury, the server who brought us our receipt also solicited us for tip!!! She didn't even ask us if we wanted to order anything else, or consider dessert. She explained why they had to turn to using the barcode ordering system then straight up asked us to please "help them out" *wink*wink*. Don't get me wrong, I have been a generous tipper, especially so during Covid (even just for take out) but the service we got from the set of servers and that one water guy was incredibly lousy. -And this is coming from two patrons who have both worked in food service in the past. The worst thing about this water spill incident is that we like to walk around DTPA afterwards and it was pretty darn cold trying to stroll around with soggy pants. This was so disappointing, I feel like I need to take a visit to Myanmar Tea Garden in Fremont to make up for this experience. Their entree was too spicy and we had to send it back. The server took the dish inside where It was tasted by the chef and brought it back to our table that it was not. We did not want to touch this food tasted by the chef and ordered a less spicy version and sent the spicy dish away. The server brought our new order with the old dish (tasted by the chef) in a to-go box . We did not ask for old dish to be packed to-go. At this point we lost trust in how the food was cooked at this place and thought that it was rude for the server to bring us back the food that we sent away. I paid full price for all the food and tipped the server while she was hovering over my shoulder. The entire experience was bad. I hope they train their staff/chef or just change them. First time having Burmese food and I loved it. Rangoon Ruby catered an office lunch that we had at work so we ordered a variety of dishes that could be enjoyed by everyone. The food seemed to be a mixture between Thai and Indian, which was interesting and I definitely tried some things I wouldn't normally try since I'm an extremely picky eater. Here are the dishes that I tried: Samosas - I had never had a Samosa so I was interested in trying this, it was like a baked/fried rice flour turnover filled with potatoes, veggies, spices and turmeric. It was really good but a bit spicy. These were a big hit in the meeting as people kept going back for more! Coconut Rice - It was simply just rice cooked in coconut milk (glad there was not actual coconut in it or on top lol). The rice was good but it was sweet which was a little different but it certainly balanced out the spiciness of the other dishes. Rangoon Lemongrass Chicken - This was by far my favorite dish, it was chicken cooked with lots of chili, garlic, soy sauce and of course lemongrass. This had so much flavor it was absolutely delish but it was also the spiciest dish that we had. It may have been too spicy! Basil Chili Beef - Beef cut into strips with chili AND chili flakes (they really love chili!) and basil. This dish was also good, it had a very unique taste to it but with all of the chili in the dish it was pretty mild but it did have a lot of flavor. Fiery Tofu and Vegetables - This was pan fried tofu with green beans, peppers, veggies and Rangoon sauce. This was a great vegetarian dish and it was cooked to perfection. The green beans weren't too hard or too soft, the tofu was good and the sauce was very flavorful. Overall the food was really good and better than I had anticipated and its definitely not for the faint of heart in regards to spicy, although I hate spicy food I would gladly endure the burn eating their delicious food. I definitely will be visiting the restaurant and trying some of their other dishes as it is very close to work and everything looks so good. read more

Terrible experience with service and food. First of all once you're seated, you are generally offered water and no one cared to even come to the table. So we poured the Voss bottle, without a thought. Well that was charged in our bill - $9 - without even mentioning the fact that water is chargeable. Now coming to the food, we ordered the samosa salad, which tasted like a warm lettuce salad with chunks of potato (from samosa), very very strange combination. Did not like it. Then we'd ordered garlic noodles which was toooo salty and had no flavour of garlic. We were greeted and offered a table right next to table that had their belongings all over the booth. I actually assumed we were offered the four top next to them. The waiter then said we couldn't sit there since there were two of us, so he directed us all the way to the far corner of the restaurant. I made a joke about the restaurant being full (it was pretty empty). Once seated they told us to scan the QR code, I asked if there was a menu, he said there was and I asked for two physical menus. He brought them and told us the menus are not updated and dont have the correct prices... After that I asked if they had water since I assumed the sparkling water was not free (looking afterwards its $10 but that is not obvious because its on every table and there is no price apparent) the waiter snarkily replied "Its a restuarant everything here cost money" I asked for tap water. After that I asked my wife if she wanted to leave and instead we went to Cafe 220 across the street where they have good service and good food. On our way out to their credit someone did see us leave and asked me about what happened. They didnt offer anything but thanked me for sharing my feedback. Being rude to customers is very short sighted, contrary to the snarky comment about things costing money, I dont mind spending money at restaurants and I value local businesses. I work nearby in downtown and I love to share recommendations with my peers and recommend restaurants for the office. If this had been a good experience I might have even come back. However the likelihood of me ever coming back or recommending anyone go here is now slim to none. read more

I ordered catering at my brother's home for a small family gathering (10 people). Stella, the coordinator, was very helpful and provided the needed information in a timely manner. I selected the dishes I wanted from their online menu, and she made it work for 10 people. I'm sure she would help you select items, if that is what you wanted. Everything went smoothly. My first time introduction to Burmese food was at Burma Superstar located in san Francisco. Since then I am a fan of Burmese cuisine. After that I tried Rangoon Ruby in Palo Alto and have been to this place for many times. I have celebrated many special occasions here. They never failed to impress me and I am convinced to say that this place is by far the best place to have Burmese cuisine in Bay Area. Our last order was: - Tea leaf Salad - Rainbow Salad - Samosa Soup - Garlic Noodles - Fiery Tofu and vegetables Tea leaf salad! Super testy! Samosa Soup was delicious. This is the first place where I tried Samosa Soup which was really flavorful and served warm. I also noticed that they are serving samosas in different forms which is quite unique and interesting. Garlic Noodles were good nothing extraordinary and little bit sweet but I liked the test and the texture of it. In Fiery Tofu and vegetables spices are overwhelmingly good! The staff is very friendly and very welcoming. They always suggest best dishes as per your test. I love their service. It is quite quick. The only thing is, quantities are smaller than most burmese places around. Also for dine in, I would say make a reservation before you reach there or be prepared to wait in long, I mean to say really long line. LOL :) I would highly recommend this place to those who likes Thai, Chinese and Indian food, they will definitely enjoy eating here and surely come back soon. This is not a Burmese restaurant. The servers, as well as the clientele, appear to be Indian. I also wouldn't call it Asian fusion. The tea leaf salad, which is the Burmese thing we went for, was dismal and flavorless - so disappointing. Mandalay in SF is great - not as great as it used to be, but their tea leaf salad is as good as ever. And truly Burmese food. Not a fan, and at $80.00 for two for lunch (no alcohol), which consisted of two dreary salads and four samosas, we won't be back. If the food is delicious, AOK, but not for this food. read more

I suspect real Burmese food is spicier but it was a good combo. The venue. The tables were jammed together and the volume is loud. The two-top we sat at wasn't big enough for three serving dishes, our plates and two bottles of beer. The young couple next to us -- Stanford students on a first date -- may as well have been sitting in our laps. (But I do wonder if there will be a second date between these very sincere intellectuals. The woman was very liberal-artsy while the guy was very engineer-ish.) There are so many reasons this place deserves 0 stars. First, their seating is so so cramped, there is hardly even a feet of distance between tables, let alone 6ft. The food was delicious. We ordered and shared the samosa soup. It was good but needed to be eaten quickly; the samosa wrapper was getting more soggy toward the end of my cup than I preferred. We also shared the tea leaf salad, which was fresh and fine tasting. My Pad Thai (Burmese style) was very well-seasoned. Man, this place gets busy! You will not get a table without a serious wait...even with reservations. The best menu item is the mango chicken - it hits the spot every time, and has onions which are a nice piquant counterpart to the sweetness of the mango shards. I wish there was a bit more chicken and a few less onion slices. Parking is a little tricky, as downtown Palo Alto always is, so be patient and arrive early. The seats are sturdy and armless, but the table setup is very cozy and assistive equipment and larger bodies may not fit well through the narrow aisles. They have one other location, which is in San Carlos, and the wait time might be better at that location. read more

I ordered the garlic noodles with chicken. They served it with a sweet red sauce, which was good because neither the chicken or the noodles had much flavor on their own. The garlic appeared to be limited to a sprinkling of toasted, chopped garlic on the top. This probably is safer for lunch than the Vietnamese/Thai dish I am used to!
