Range Free is truly one of a kind. I'm so appreciative that it's one of the very few (if not the only) completely gluten-free and allergy-friendly places not just in Columbia, but honestly in the state. I've rarely come across places like this, and it makes such a difference for people with dietary restrictions to feel genuinely safe and included. Beyond the food, the staff is absolutely awesome. Everyone is so kind, welcoming, and thoughtful. The space itself is warm and inviting, perfect for getting some work done, meeting a friend, or just stopping in for a quick treat. This is a special place, and I really hope more people discover it so they can continue to grow. Would love to see more late or coffee items:) The must gets are the no bake cookies and bagels with dairy free cream cheese! It is so hard to find a place to eat that is entirely gluten free where I don't have to worry about cross contamination. I have eaten here many times and never had anything that I didn't like. The staff is always very friendly. Absolutely EVERYTHING they make is gluten free. They also make food that is dairy free, soy free, egg free, and vegan. They don't serve you a bunch of processed or premade frozen foods. They use locally sourced foods when available. I highly recommend that everyone check them out. I wanted to like it because I am a celiac and want to support restaurants that offer gluten free options, but this was gross. We had biscuits and gravy and a waffle. Biscuits were super dry. The gravy was off and the waffle was rubbery. The syrup was molasses which is fine if they had told us that. My son about threw up in response to it. I ordered a little of everything, a strawberry cupcake-the frosting was the best texture I've ever had for an allergen free dessert: I also ordered the 'N'oreo, a S'mores creation, and a strawberry donut with chocolate glaze. The s'mores thing was amazing. But strangely my favorite was the Donut, maybe because I haven't had one in so long? But the flavor of the strawberry in it was just incredible, as was the texture. I ordered the Brutus salad-and the only toppings were the dressing and the croutons, which I suppose is more like a traditional Caesar; I was hoping for more toppings, but honestly, the overall flavor was so good, I can't complain. This place is definitely a hidden gem in Columbia! If you are like me and are allergic to a lot of foods or if you just want to enjoy great food- you must try Range Free! My friend (who has no food allergies) and myself went for brunch on Saturday and I could have cried with happiness. I could actually order several things off the menu and ended up picking the waffle! So amazing!!! It had blackberries on it with real syrup. Then after I had to get a cupcake, obviously.... So I got the mint chocolate cupcake. I have had a lot of gf/ vegan cupcakes in my time, but nothing compared to this cupcake! It was so moist and creamy that I even went up to the lady to make sure it didn't have milk, eggs or gluten in it. She informed me that no grains were even in it- crazy!! Stopped by RF for breakfast and was pleasantly surprised with the menu. Granted, I found it a little confusing to locate, but once I was inside, I enjoyed the quaint atmosphere. My wife and I were the only people in the café at the time and were greeted by a nice lady behind the counter. I didn't get anything fancy... just some bacon and eggs... and both were good. I will always compliment a place that doesn't serve brittle bacon and RF did not. My only complaint is the wait time on the food, which I found to be a little long for what I ordered coupled with the lack of patrons in the café. Overall, a good experience nonetheless. read more

Oh my goodness!!! I can't say enough about how wonderful Range Free is!! The owner and staff are well educated in food allergies and various diets, AIP, Paleo, etc. I try to stick with a paleo diet, but it's difficult to find delicious options....and I'm a terrible cook! I have yet to try anything that wasn't scrumptious! They use locally sourced items, so the menu changes l regularly; which is wonderful. Being vegan I am all about trying places with vegan options. My friends quiche was absurdly small for almost 8 dollars. I was dumbfounded they charged that for tart. Because it was that small. They charged my husband 9 dollars for one waffle. My sandwich and small salad was absurdly expensive and the gluten free bread was horrible. I paid 3 dollars for a tiny vegan donut. It was decent but I pay 3 dollars for a vegan donut in st Louis and it's the size of my head. I feel like I was robbed of 25 dollars. I will never come back. read more

While visiting Columbia, my husband and our two small children walked through the District looking for Lunch. We walked past Range Free and noticed it was nearly empty. We kept going, but every restaurant was packed with a wait. So we headed back to Range Free and thought we'd give it a try (it was still nearly empty). We mainly just wanted a good, filling lunch. The way the (board) menu is written is very confusing. It stated that, for a sandwich, each meat was $3, each cheese was $1 and each veggie was $.50. So, we ordered a sandwich for our two kids to split and a sandwich each, plus a cup of coffee and a small (coffee mug of) soup. The total was $37. Whaaaaa? It turns out that the base price - for just bread and a bag of chips was $6 - plus all that extra stuff. Not exactly expecting $11 sandwiches, but we continued with our order. When they arrived, it was a joke - these sandwiches were literally only slightly bigger than a soda cracker. They were like sandwiches for elves. If they were outrageously delicious.... Maybe. But they were typical sandwich-y tasting sandwiches, except for the bread which was thicker and more tasteless than most bread. Also, the soup was tepid and the food took an unusually long time for being nothing more than Elfin sandwiches. Overall, disappointing experience. The lesson: If all the surrounding restaurants are packed and this one is empty, there may be a reason. read more

A friend and I tried Range Free out this past Saturday. Although neither of us have to eat gluten-free due to an allergy, we both try to restrict our wheat consumption for different reasons. Anyway, it's in an odd location, but then again, Columbia is starting to expand it's downtown businesses so stores are opening up in all sorts of old repurposed buildings. This is in a building with several other businesses, a salon, dance studio, Frame Works, etc. When you walk in, Range Free is in the front, it reminds me of a café court in a mall. Their actual kitchen is tiny. They have plenty of staff that are very friendly and willing to answer all your questions. The owner even came and spoke with us. Their menu is on a chalkboard that probably changes daily and then they have a small board that contains items they serve daily. Since I wasn't sure about some things and if I'd like them I stuck with biscuits and gravy and my friend a biscuit sandwich. We both went for the least expensive items on the menu for that reason. Still, $7.00 seemed a bit expensive, but I know specialty food like this is higher than normal. My biscuits and gravy were good, 2 smallish biscuits cut in half and covered with gravy with a tiny bit of sausage in it. The weird thing though was that it had red pepper flakes on top. Now I like spicy so it was fine, but I'm thinking it would be way too hot for a lot of people. The biscuit sandwich came with a choice of two toppings so she selected bacon and spinach along with the egg. I believe she thought it was good, but tiny as well since there was nothing else on the regular size plate it was served on. They served natural soda and water along with some teas, etc. After eating, we chose to try a chocolate cupcake with cream cheese frosting. I am not sure as I didn't ask, but would assume the cake was flourless. The cake alone I didn't love, but mix it up with the frosting and it was pretty tasty! I'm so excited for alternative cafes like this to open up in Columbia as there are a lot of people that have become allergic to many things. Nice to have a place that serves all natural and not processed food. I knew going in it would be more expensive, so not a huge issue and people that eat that way all the time will probably consider it reasonable. read more

I wasn't thrilled by by my experience here. I was in town for a conference and was so happy to find a place to eat that served gluten free breakfast. I read the reviews here and based on them I ordered the strawberry waffle. My mom had the biscuits and gravy. We sat inside and the waitress brought my mom coffee and said the creamer was up front in the fridge if we wanted it. Our food came shortly after, and the first bite or two I noticed a wet texture to the waffle. I investigated and sure enough it was not done. My mom cut into her biscuits and said they were not done. I understand with alternative flours the texture is different, but not cooked is not cooked. I've eaten gluten free long enough to know. I ate about six bites and I couldn't eat any more. My mom tasted the gravy but did not eat the biscuits. We took our food up to the counter and the gal said she was sorry about that and explained about about the texture due to the different flour. I told her I understood, but this was not cooked enough. She explained she used the waffle iron and took it out when it was done. I said well we can't eat these - indicating our breakfasts- and she again said she was sorry. I waited but there was no offer to make something else or a refund. It was money down the drain. The juice and coffee were good but not for the $20+ dollars we paid for it. Would I go back? I don't know. I want to support independent business who go gluten free, but I need value for my money. read more

I would definitely NOT recommend. Cake had a very fudgey texture. Cake was supposed to be 1/2 white & 1/2 chocolate, but the white side was brown & had a distinct peanut butter flavor. We had a guest with peanut allergies & thank goodness we discovered the peanut better before he had any. We had so many complaints about the cake and literally no one ate more than a bite or two of their cake & we threw so much in the trash. Would not order again. read more

I called ahead and made arrangements for our book club to meet here and have lunch. It is much easier to accommodate a group in the summer when it is quieter in our college town. The staff greeted us and brought out our delicious orders within a good timeframe. It was nice to have options for our vegan and gluten free friends. We enjoyed discovering the businesses inside this building, watched a day care take a class from the Missouri Ballet instructors and even took a walk around the Orr St. Studios next door. Holy mother of God, this place is great!!! I came to Columbia to visit Rock Bridge state park and found this place with a gluten-free app that my partner uses. My partner has an intense gluten allergy so she was very excited when she found out Range Free sold DONUTS! IT IS EXTREMELY RARE to find a place that sells gluten free donuts or CUPCAKES?!?! These items were so amazing, that my partner was brought to tears while eating them. It was beautiful! As for our actual meal, we split a waffle w/ strawberries, a half order of biscuits and gravy along with a side of bacon and a cheese biscuit. The bacon was thick, the cheese biscuit was sent from heaven, the B&G was seasoned with crushed red pepper and was amazing because it actually had FLAVOR! And the waffle... DAMN. Just. Damn. It was the perfect amount of food for the both of us and it was no more expensive than buying some prepackaged crap from some chain restaurant(and waaaay cheaper than most restaurants that up charge for gluten free options). Also, this place is CELIAC FRIENDLY!!!! There is no flour or gluten(or nuts!) even used in the Kitchen! RARE! The owner knows her stuff. My partner and I do some baking at home, and gluten-free baking is not as easy as baking with regular flour. Holy $#%@!!!! If Range Free was located in Kansas City, I would probably visit every other day for breakfast or lunch. Columbia is a lucky town. I can't wait to come back to have the pizza and grab a "no nutter" cookie for my nephew who is allergic to peanuts and has never had a peanut butter cookie. I loved this place. read more

My daughter just moved back to CoMo and this restaurant was a wonderful discovery! Our issue is Celiac and finally a restaurant where you can eat gluten free without worrying about cross contamination that the the corporate restaurants won't guarantee. So there is peace of mind along with very good food. The food is flavorful and there are enough options to satisfy. I have multiple allergies including egg/ dairy and most importantly Sulfites. If you do not know about sulfites its in processed foods, and you must be aware of how things are milled or prepared for consumption as it does not necessarily have to appear on packaging . My sons surprised with my first birthday cake from Range Free. So whats the big deal. I have not had a cake in over 10 years . It is such a luxury to have a place I know my son can eat safely, and not have to worry about cross contamination with nuts at all. That the food is delicious is a bonus!
