Both the interior and the signage look like those of Safeway and Vons.
    Robert G.

I know I had written a review of this supermarket at a previous time, but I'm not seeing it. So, this review of Randall's in the "South Bay" is a fresh one as opposed to an update. I read reviews of supermarkets in general and see that people are going off based on one interaction or one experience with merchandise. Except for some bargain type supermarkets in sketchy neighborhoods where they are probably conditioned and instructed to view everyone with suspicion, this negativity does not come my way at most chain supermarkets. Randall's is part of the Safeway family of supermarkets which also includes Safeway (obviously), Vons, and Dominick's, whose catchment area I'm not familiar with. That said, I went in here and ... badda bing ... my Safeway club card worked. The price points of their items are just like those of Safeway and Vons. They are in the mid-range, with some items featured at good prices. That's why you should read your supermarket flyers ... to find those items. I have bought things from the aisles here but, at this location, I have mostly eaten sandwiches from their deli. Now, while they don't have the excellent spread of sandwiches like Safeway (and Vons) had up on their sandwich board about a decade ago, such as the tender Tuscan chicken and hearty meatloaf sandwiches, you can't complain about a nicely decked out, custom made sandwich for $ 5.99. It's practically a complete meal. I could go with a 3 or a 4 with this Randall's. Yes, the employees come in at about a 3. I won't go into detail. Their merchandise and its prices come in at about a 4. How manicured the shopping center, the parking, the circulation to the major streets, and the neighborhood are make for about a 5. The store itself looks like a 4 from the outside but, then, once inside, it doesn't have the higher ceilings that the exterior seems to suggest. Overall, this Randall's is a much better than average supermarket in a very nice area.

Another beautiful and delicious cake from this awesome bakery!

Thanks to the deli ladies who made us a gorgeous cheese tray! It was a huge hit and I was very pleased at the price! Thanks!

    Potato Topping

I COULD NOT find my favorite Potato Topping anywhere and the staff (Nathan) exceeded my expectations with their customer service. They special ordered these for me and called me the next day when they came in. Will definitely be shopping here all the time :)

The vegetable samosas are also my favorite in the area! They create an in-house sauce of brown sugar with spices, and it is my absolute favorite sauce I've had with samosas. It's better than chutney or tomato sauce. The sweetness and spices are perfect with the savory flavor of the samosas. The aromas of the varieties of spices light up the atmosphere.

The chicken kadai was very flavorful with lots of spices and aromatics, and the rice and naan were both good. My husband also had a mango lassi, which was silky and delicious. It was a lighter dish than I expected but turned out to be perfect for a warm night. It was lacking flavor but adding generous amounts of salt, pepper, and Parmesan cheese made a big difference. My companion had the tropical crab salad and it was fantastic. Refreshing and flavorful. The whole, sliced avocado was a nice touch. And it was just a vibrant looking dish. A large, soft, salty pretzel and creamy, decadent dip made this app a 10/10. Then we tried a couple of cups of gumbo which had the best roux I have ever tasted... Another 10!!! A small one crawling on the wall near our table and someone from my party saw a larger one crawling near the kitchen. And boy was it stuffy in there. I asked our waitress if she could move a floor fan near for some relief and to detour the gnats, she said she go ask but she never came back and when she did she completely forgot my request. We weren't seated in the greater eating area where it was cooler and maybe where the gnats were less of a bother. The food was delicious and homemade, you can tell it was made with high quality ingredients and that Southern skill that you can only get from helping Grandma in the kitchen. BUT the roaches made us lose our appetite. Such a shame. It seemed like the building went down. They don't seem to put as much effort into the condition of that place as they do the food. Dusty ceiling fans and crummy floors. I appreciate the homey vibe but it looked really junky, more stuff piled in unoccupied corners as before. I gave a lot of things the side eye, I mean it there has to be maintained asthetic. They charged an 18% gratuity on my tab for a party of 8 but I arrived with 4 people, the other 4 had already been there, paid and was almost done with their meal. Then of course the cashier/waitress still mentioned an additional, optional tip. I didn't think that was fair. At the end of it all she wasn't the best waitress.

We had so many restaurant options but chose this place because of the high ratings... and I'm so glad we did. I'll be honest--when we first arrived, I wasn't impressed with the outside or the area. I was a little hesitant going in. But the moment we walked through the doors, everything changed. The place felt welcoming, the staff was friendly and attentive, and the atmosphere--yes, a little loud--but in a good way. It's that lively Mexican vibe: music, micheladas, carne asada... all of it. We were just tired, so I think I noticed it more. Now let's talk about the food... I ordered the Maestro Plate but swapped the meat for short rib costillas--and OH. MY. GOSH. These were hands down some of the best costillas I've ever had. Juicy, tender, packed with flavor. I cleaned those bones completely--every single bite. The dish was served with perfectly grilled "nopales" and queso panela, que ricura! Ahhh, and of course the charro beans and rice that I barely made a dent in. The portions? HUGE. Two of us shared one plate and still had leftovers--and we can eat! Now this part says everything: my grandson, who is on the spectrum and very picky, ordered pollo asado... and he tore into it. No complaints, no hesitation--he finished his entire plate. That alone speaks volumes. My daughter had the birria (and she's a birria critic), and even she couldn't finish her plate because of how generous the portion was--but she said it was full of flavor and really good. My older grandson (big growing boy with an equally big appetite) had a birria quesadilla--again, huge portion--and even he couldn't finish it, which never happens. To top it all off, the owner surprised us with a complimentary dessert--warm, soft, pillowy sopapillas with whipped cream and chocolate drizzle. The kids were FULL... and still devoured every last bite. Not a crumb left. And let's talk about pricing... honey. Compared to Austin? This was a steal. I was honestly shocked at how affordable it was for the quality and portion sizes. Amazing food, generous portions, great service, and a place that turned my hesitation into loyalty. They've earned our business--100%. We will absolutely be back next time we're in town.

Opus Bistro is a fine dining establishment. There is a good variety of appetizers, salads, and beef, chicken, and seafood entrees. They also have a decent wine list. In addition, for a relatively small cork fee, you can bring your own bottle. I have been here a few times now and find the food to be pretty good but not excellent, especially for the price. The waitstaff is attentive but the support staff is lacking. Water glasses remained empty for long periods of time. We split a Caesar salad (which the kitchen split for us; nice touch). I ordered Redfish which was prepared perfectly. She ordered Blackened Mahi Mahi with shrimp. She liked it. For dessert, we ordered Cheesecake. Bottom line - Although everything tasted good, it simply was not extremely memorable. We enjoy the location and the ability to bring your own bottle of wine, but prices seem high for what you get. 3.5 stars would be a fair review. Bon appétit, y'all.

I was genuinely disappointed with my experience at Opus…read more My wife and I had eaten here once before and, frankly, were not particularly impressed with the food. When we heard about the Buffalo Trace Bourbon Night, we saw it as an opportunity to give Opus a second chance while enjoying an event centered around one of our interests. As a bourbon enthusiast and collector with more than 120 bottles in my collection, this was a special event that I had been looking forward to for over a week. About a week and a half before the event, I called and made what I believed was a reservation. During that call, I specifically asked whether my wife could attend and have something other than bourbon. The young man I spoke with even put me on hold and checked with someone before confirming that would be fine. At no point during that conversation was I told that I was being placed on a waiting list rather than receiving a confirmed reservation. When we arrived the night of the event, we were handed a drink and then informed that we could not enter because there was no space available. Standing there with a drink in hand only to be told we were not actually admitted to the event was embarrassing and frustrating. We had planned our evening around this experience and were excited to attend, only to find out that what we thought was a reservation was apparently a spot on a waiting list. What made the situation even more disappointing was the lack of effort to make things right. Mistakes happen, and most reasonable people understand that. However, there was no meaningful attempt to accommodate us, no alternative offered, and very little acknowledgment of the inconvenience and embarrassment caused by the situation. The food itself remains what I would consider average--certainly not bad, but not memorable enough to overcome the customer service experience. We ultimately left and went to Kemah Steak Company, where we enjoyed excellent service, great steaks, and some outstanding Garrison Brothers bourbon. Ironically, the evening we had hoped to spend at Opus turned into a reminder of how much good service and customer care matter. I wanted Opus to prove my first impression wrong. Unfortunately, this experience only reinforced it. For a restaurant hosting specialty events, communication and customer service should be just as important as the food and drinks being served.
