My journey started over 2 years ago. It started while I was in the gym, I'd bend to deadlift or pick weight up from the ground. A jolting sharp pain would shoot down the front of my right leg. Some things would make it worse, and sometimes it was fine. In October 2024 I finally got an MRI and the orthopedic doctor found a tumor on the nerve sheath on the nerve root coming out of L3-L4 of my spine. I made appointments with all neurologists in Las Vegas that have experience with tumors. Unfortunately NONE of the neurologists here were willing or capable to operate on me. One of them referred me to Barrow Neurological Institute. I went to their site and submitted all of my test results and information to Barrow's Second Opinion portal. Within 1 week I had a response and plan of action from Dr. Randall Porter. It looked great and he was confident. We set up a consultation for March - they were booked out a couple months! March comes, the appointment went great, Dr. Porter was so confident, thoughtful and respectful that we felt GREAT leaving his office. Two days later his office called to schedule me for surgery in May; two and a half months out. The day couldn't come soon enough. The office was SO organized, I got a packet of information with anything I could think of ask. They have a portal that has everything and we could message and get information. When it comes to Dr. Porter - Words can't express my gratitude for his talent and thoughtfulness. The morning of surgery he came to talk to us, and asked if it's ok if he prayed with us. I'm not a very religious person but in this case I felt like it could only help! Whew! Tears, nervousness, anxiety- all of it. When other doctors tell you that your surgery will end up with more pain, loss of use, etc. You start to worry. Not only did Dr. Porter get the whole quarter sized tumor, and do a single level fusion (no disc issues). Fast forward, I'm 10 weeks from surgery, I have no pain like I did pre-surgery. I had a brain tumor removed in 2020. Thank God annual MRI's have been negative. I recently moved from Nevada to Chandler and was given a referral to see Dr. Porter. He came in with a serious look, asked me tons of questions about my surgery, gave me referrals for other issues and overall made me relax. One of the best Dr's I have ever met at a office visit. Dr. Porter is an outstanding neurosurgeon. I had an acoustic neuroma which needed to be removed, and he took the time to go through step by step what surgery would entail, what it would look like during my time in the hospital and recovery. His assistant answered every call I made prior to surgery. The morning of, Dr. Porter came into pre-op to answer any questions I had and to pray with me before going into the operating room. The procedure lasted a long time, but he went out after to speak to my family in a private room to share that he was able to get the entire tumor out --that it would be a bit before they could see me, but they would be taken back when able. He also came to check on me the next day when I was still recovering in the hospital. He told me each day I would see improvement. I am beyond grateful that Dr. Porter was my surgeon; at my 2 week follow-up, he listened to how I was doing, answered my questions about what to expect next, how to continue in my recovery, and "what next." Botched surgery by Dr. Randall Porter. Read this complete review before undergoing surgery performed by Dr. Randall Porter. Let's hope Andrew doesn't delete this post. Lookup the "I'm sorry" law: 12-2605: Evidence of admissions; civil proceedings; unanticipated outcomes; medical care. Dr. Randall Porter performed spinal fusion surgery on my lumbar spine to correct/fix sciatica pain. During my surgery Dr. Porter punctured the dura and a portion of a nerve was cut. At a minimum this caused a spinal fluid leak. I ended up in Intensive Care for 6 days because a drain was inserted in my back to drain the spinal fluid. The surgery fixed the sciatica issue, but I was left with WORSE problems. I'm sorry I had the surgery. I WAS AFFECTED MENTALLY AND PHYSICALLY BY THE BOTCHED SURGERY. LEG/FEET ISSUES: Neuropathy in feet; Pain and partial numbness in legs and feet; Painful spasms and cramps in legs; Trouble standing longer than 60 minutes; Difficulty walking on an incline. EMOTIONAL DISTRESS: Lost confidence and interest in life; Feelings of anger, guilt, shame, embarrassment, and dread; Hair loss for a duration of 4 1/2 months, due to stress from the surgery; Severe depression. The first post-surgery follow-up appointment I saw Julie Supple, NP. Statements made by Julie Supple: "...As you know we are very transparent...You are in the best place for something like this to happen...There hasn't been a Dr. that has not made a mistake...". During one office visit, I asked Dr. Porter what exactly happened during the surgery. He immediately took the video camera (all office appointments are recorded) and placed it in front of me. Using a spinal model, he described exactly what happened during surgery, and then apologized, "...At a minimum, I cut or damaged the sensory nerve...I used a curette I hadn't used before that was longer than usual, and I'll never use that again...I'm truly sorry for that...". Now I know why these statements were made. A lawyer informed us of the Arizona Medical Malpractice "I'm Sorry" Law.
