Cafe de Ola with a shot of Chivas Regal Scotch Whisky
    Tenia B.

Unforgettable weekend getaway at a stunning hacienda! The estate is breathtaking, it is absolutely peaceful! Fabulous Sunday brunch, the food was amazing, we loved everything we tasted! The tortilla soup was the best ever with cheese, avocado and chicharones! You could actually hear the chicarones crackling as they poured the soup into the bowl on top of them! The presentation was perfect. Their Cafe de Ola is the best, especially with a shot of Chivas Regal Scotch Whisky ;-) Just try it, you will thank me later for it! The service was outstanding, everyone took such good care of us! We were sad to leave and can not wait to visit and explore the estate again and again!

Beautiful grounds, super nice attentive staff!

Rancho La Puerta is a place and an experience you didn't know you need in your life. Once there,…read moreyou realize how vital this place is to your well-being. As of 2025, this was my 3rd retreat to RLP and it won't be my last. I plan on making this an annual trip. It's hard to put into words how great it feels to be here, and even harder to show how beautiful it is because the photos never do it justice. Pros: - The food. It's delicious and makes you feel good from the inside out. Dining happens in the dining hall which is this beautiful building where meals are treated as more than nourishment for your body, but for your soul as well. Breakfast and lunch are served buffet style. You can sit outside with beautiful views of Mt. Kuchumaa or sit indoors. There are small tables and large tables to sit with new and old friends. Dinner is served table side. Each meal is crafted with care using a delicous, fresh variety of foods that include whatever is growing in their gardens (more on the gardens later). - The property. The entire property is rustic but cared for and loved. The grounds and gardens are meticulously maintained. - Mt Kuchumaa. My absolute favorite part of RLP are the morning (sunrise) hikes. Many different levels of hiking and no experience required. My favorite hike is Coyote and the Breakfast Hike. - No wifi or televisions. It's a great way to unwind. - The classes; fitness, art, speakers....there is so much to learn. - The rooms are rustic and clean. You have all the amenities you need. - Spend time relaxing at one of the amazing pools and spas. - Shuttle service from San Diego is great. They are also wonderful if you need to arrive or depart in an off-day. - I always felt safe and cared for Cons: (this list could be kinda short) - Sometimes it's confusing to navigate the property. Especially if it's your first time. Also, if you have mobility issues, you will want to keep that in mind as there is a lot of walking to do to get from place to place....BUT, with that said, I saw a lot of people with less mobility than myself getting around just fine. :) They may not be on sunrise hikes, but they were in all the classes, concerts and dinners. - Highway Noise. Unfortunately, you can hear the highway from the ranch, which is so strange because it feels like a different world...but yes, it's close to the major highway and you will hear semi truck air brakes quite often. Some casitas are closer than others. This is my must-do list: - Hiking Mt Kuchumaa. They have several options every morning. - Gourmet Breakfast Hike - Cooking class - Spa (getting a treatment or just spending a few hours relaxing in the women's only spa pool/hot tub) - Sound bath sessions - Instructor-led classes - so much variety! Pro-tip suggestions: - Don't go hungry...need more protein and avocados for breakfast or lunch? Just ask, they will bring it to you from the kitchen. - Don't go hungry....order a meal and a half at dinner or get half of each entree. - Don't over-schedule yourself, but DO make sure you look at everything that's offered all week. - This is not the Marriott or Ritz. It is a rustic, wonderful health resort that reflects the vibe they are going for. - Be open and relax. - Sign up right away for classes that fill up like the Organic Breakfast hike and things that cost more like the Cooking Class. - Review your folder and take a couple of hours to acquaint yourself with how things work, the classes and grounds.

Best spa and resort for a family vacation. Healthy food and excellent service. Price is worth it.read more

I especially like how I can sit in the room and see the kids on the beach at the same time. The members/families here are seem well mannered - no loud music, yelling, or complaining. Just people enjoying themselves. Even the kids are well-behaved and not being a nuisance to other guests.  All this makes lounging on the beach a very pleasant experience. I like that it's an active club with tennis, pickle ball, lap swimming, and a fun 9 hole.  Even with no surf, I can always find something fun to do. Plenty of activities for the kids as well. The food is on point so we never really need to go out to eat. Guest Services and the staff are always very courteous and helpful. Combine the above with the beautiful setting of La Jolla and no wonder the kids never want to leave when we visit here :)

Several rooms were in poor condition, and one room facing the parking lot had a serious pest problem, including cockroaches and spiders. The bathroom was outdated, worn down, and far below what anyone should expect from a property charging premium rates. Frankly, it felt more like a budget motel than a luxury beachfront resort. We also spent over $5,000 on a private dinner event and were never informed that the event would need to end by 8:45 PM so staff could begin putting away tables and chairs. Had we known in advance, we would have planned accordingly. To make matters worse, after already paying more than $24,000, we were presented with an additional charge of approximately $7,000 with little explanation. After requesting an itemized bill for each room, we were refunded $6,000. The beach location is beautiful, but that alone does not justify the prices being charged. Between the poor room conditions, pest issues, lack of communication, and unexpected charges, this experience fell far short of expectations and did not come close to delivering the level of quality advertised. I would not stay here again and cannot recommend it for special events, family gatherings, or anyone expecting a luxury resort experience. Instead of feeling like we'd had a luxury stay, we were left feeling like we'd just stayed at a cheap motel -- extremely disappointing.

Between my mom's transition and the heavy lifting it took to settle her estate, to covid, and then losing 1/3 of my hair (Deva Curl has been nicknamed Devil Curl since February 2020 for a reason) I needed to inject more sweetness, SELF-CARE and nature into my life. I researched deeply but always came back to Golden Door! The environment and the staff literally EMBRACE YOUR LIFE. The life condition on every level was unforgettable. I went on an all-female week and the sharing, fun and bonding were so wonderful. Women AND GIRLS I might never meet or maybe even resonate with in my "outside" life are now treasures! And the sessions!!! The pre-call to determine your preferences, goals and classes was excellent. But the amazing thing was that once I was there it was the sessions I substituted on a whim or because of availability WERE ALWAYS THE ONES WHERE I HAD THE MOST GROWTH AND AHAA MOMENTS! There is so much physical beauty. The serenity of every aspect of the design of my room and its surroundings! The FOOD (even the pizza was epic). The staff the staff the staff! The stillness (cell phone conversations only in your room.) I hesitate to rave about Sandy's fitness training, Daniel's massages, Crystal's skin care and Shannon - a tarot card reader with a true gift- and soooo many more because I will always ask for them!!! (But every woman loved THEIR "people" so there are only winners here!) I returned with new skills, a refreshed outlook and helpful printouts and reminders as tools to maintain the aspects I found most valuable. AND IF YOU LIVE ANYWHERE IN THE EXTENDED LOS ANGELES AREA THEY WILL ARRANGE FOR YOU TO BE PICKED UP AND RETURNED INCLUSIVE!!! (AND YET a teensy critique: Okay... the woman doing my hair service who acted as if doing me and my curly hair was an affront. That (given my recent hair debacle- losing one third of it last year to Deva Curl...now nicknamed Devil Curl by girls across the country) begging for a wider comb (she didn't even pretend to have ever even seen one) and for her to pleeeZe detangle from the bottom not the roots (breakage. Curly!) was insulting to her. Even asking for a slightly firmer scalp massage touch elicited a firm "NO." ( No explanation just...no!) But the fact that she stands out in memory is just A TESTIMONIAL TO HOW UTTERLY PERFECT EVERYTHING ELSE IS!

***I WILL NOT BE RETUNING***…read more Let me start by saying my first visit to Golden Door in January 2024 was one of the most magical, transformative, spiritual and relaxing experience I have ever had. From the food, to the choice of classes, the tranquil property and all inclusive amenities really stood out from anything else I have experienced. I have worked in the hospitality industry for 20 years and this was a very special and memorable place. I had such a wonderful experience the first time I decided to use my savings to return in 2025. The past 5 years has been filled with trauma and major life changes and I felt I deserved to treat myself even though I really couldn't afford to do so. I arrived Sunday, January 19, 2025 and until Tuesday afternoon my experience was exactly as I had remembered. I was so thrilled to be there. Tuesday, January 21, my massage therapist came to my room to give me a massage. The therapist was pretty firm with their pressure, but I assumed this would be good since I normally get soft pressure and my muscles were a bit tense. We discussed their type of massages and they explained they are prone to give deep tissue massages. The massage was ok, although slightly painful. During the last couple minutes of the massage, the therapist focused on my shoulders and neck area. They turned my neck to one side and pressed firm with their knuckles, then flipped my head over to the other side and continued firmly pressing my neck. At one point, for a couple seconds, I thought I may pass out, but soon recovered. I got up from the table and walked to the bathroom and at that moment I felt the room spinning. I told the massage therapist I felt dizzy and they directed me to sit down and drink some water as I could be dehydrated. Then they talked about common dizziness after massages and proceeded to tell me about a time when they gave someone a massage and when the client left, they got in a car accident. I was disturbed by the story but continued to focus on drinking fluids. The massage therapist left 15 minutes later. About 45 minutes later, I called the kitchen to send some coconut water, a banana and some cheese. I thought it was possible my blood sugar was low. Around 8 pm I went to bed, hoping that it was just a minor episode of dehydration and low glucose although the spinning continued after eating and drinking. In the morning I woke up and as I rolled out of bed, again felt the room spinning and became nauseous. At that time I called the front desk to ask about a car to Urgent Care. I spent 2 hours at Urgent Care to be told by the doctor I could have a "cerebral stroke" and I needed to head straight to the Emergency Room for a CT Scan. I spent 6 hours in the Emergency Room to thankfully be told I did not have a cerebral stroke and diagnosed with peripheral vertigo. I want to give you the facts of the story in case there are any future incidences, it could be a liability. I spent Tuesday evening in my room, all day Wednesday in the hospital, through my departure on Sunday mostly in my room trying to limit my movement due to the vertigo. My trip was more than ruined. I was extremely disappointed and disheartened Golden Door only offered to cover an acupuncture session while on property. I sent a letter to the Manager following my return home and they offered to take $2,000 off $12,000 on my next visit. I don't make six figures and don't have a lot of savings. I spent all year looking forward to this return. I had planned to return again next year if my finances allowed, but I will not be returning.
