I love this place! It's a good, solid, family-run restaurant with wide menu variety. For me, though, what makes it a destination is their Ethiopian food. This is Ethiopian home cooking like Momma used to make...had she ever made Ethiopian food! Excellent seasoning, nice presentation and generous portions. Their food is on a par if not above the restaurants in "Little Ethiopia" on Fairfax in LA, and a lot closer to me with easier parking. They have Mexican dishes (haven't tried) and American dishes (a solid club salad, good burgers), but my go-to and go-for is the Ethiopian. I get either the Ethiopian Chicken or Vegetarian Plate. Both pack a bit of heat, so keep a water glass handy. Their injera bread is consistently excellent and is just the scoop you need to savor every bit of the veggies and/or chicken. Friendly service every time by the family staff. Super easy on-off access from the 210, and plenty of parking in their lot or on the street. Go try it for something deliciously different! read more

Ranch Side Cafe - So LA: American, Mexican, Ethiopian! And all delicious! : ) - American Near Me - Sylmar, California

This is a great family run country style cafe with a cowboy and horse country flare. The owners are really nice and the food is excellent. They have the best chicken salad and their breakfasts are huge and really good. If you want to get away from the Denny's and el toritos and enjoy a local restaurant with a wide selection of food in a really friendly atmosphere this place is for you. I've been eating here for more than a decade and love coming back to people that remember your name and serve good food. read more

The workers are nice, however the food could use improvement. The Mexican food is awful if you're used to real Mexican food. Everything tastes pretty bland. The hamburgers are pretty decent but that's about it. read more

Everything I've tried here is great. Breakfast! Omelets, Eggs Benedict!, Avocado and Ham Omelet! So yummy. With perfectly rip sliced avocado on top, melty cheese inside. Lunch is also great, I love the BBQ chicken salad. I'm a big fan of BBQ sauce. They have great burritos and a ton of choices. My vegetarian sister always finds something there too. The service is also great. I have to stop here every time I'm in the neighbourhood - which isn't a lot. But I look forward to it every time. read more

Have yet to order anything here that I didn't enjoy. Friendly service and a welcoming atmosphere makes this place a great place to grab a quick bite to eat. Love the burgers, burritos, pigs-in-a-blanket breakfast, and club sandwich. Stop by soon! read more

Bad food. Frozen hash browns. Still cold when served. To heat up they put whole plate in microwave ruining rest of food and avocados. Stay away. read more

We stopped here for lunch on our way out of LA up to Sacramento. Super nice owners and a quiet ambiance. Not much by way of decoration. I can't recommend the American dishes- they were ordinary- but the Ethiopian food seems to be the way to go. I had the samosa-like appetizer with lentils and it was the most interesting thing I tried here. Very flavorful and tasty. This seems like a good place to try Ethiopian food! read more

I've been here several times and on average, it's just OK. If you want a local place to eat when your in the area, for me, close to the ranch, then this works for a quick bite. Don't expect too much. The food has it's good and bad days. The service is fair as well. I would suggest sticking to the burgers and you'll be safe. Much beyond that could prove to be a disappointment. The parking is weird and shares with other businesses. Leaving the lot, you can only go one way so parking on the street behind make it easier. read more

Not my first time here, but for sure my last. We brought my father here for breakfast for his birthday because he choosed this place. When we arrived I told the waiter that we were here because of his birthday. I get it if there's places that dont sing for birthdays but she could of at least told me. She took too long to pick up our plates after we were done took a long time to bring me the check and still had us waiting to see if they would sing to my father. I am sure my dad was waiting for something but unfortunately the lady didn't say anything. We left this place unsatisfied and sad that my father didnt feel special. read more

I enjoyed the Ethiopian Vegetable Plate, which was advertised with injera. The various dishes were tasty and certainly Ethiopian flavored. In my Ethiopian dinning experience, the injera was provided endlessly. In this case, the only injera provided was the one that the vegetables were served on. My education with Ethiopian food is that you eat with your hands, using the injera to scoop up the food. This is certainly difficult to do with only one injera, which soaked by the vegetables on top. When I asked about injera that typically accompanies the meal, I was told that it would be extra. And the owner gave me the most lame reasoning, as she stated that injera served at Ethiopian restaurants were made with wheat and not the traditional grain teff. As if the owner new where I had my Ethiopian dinning experiences. Having the $2 to pay for the extra injera, wasn't the issue. Having experienced Ethiopian dinning in a certain manner, thus having a certain expectation was my issue. The waitress was very nice and ironically the iced tea endless (not the injera). read more

First time here and loved this place! The French toast was absolutely delicious and the prices were very reasonable. We love supporting small local businesses and definitely recommend this place! read more

I have been driving by this place for a while, so one day some friends came in from New York. I took them there for some country cooking. The Service was ok coffees all around then the food took a while. The cook was in the restroom for some time, when returned the potatoes were cold, eggs were runny, bacon was not crispy. I'm sorry but I can't go back. Thank you read more

Been coming here for years. My favorite is the breakfast burritos. I recently tried their Ethiopian menu, which is also delicious! Loved the Ethiopian chicken. read more

I give this restaurant a 4* just because I don't believe a restaurant should be 5*'s. This is a great place to grab a bite to eat. The breakfast is top quality for a country style restaurant and they have a new coffee vendor, that is pretty darn good. The staff is enjoyable but I come for the great breakfast options. I'm never let down. read more

Fantastic little cafe, family owned and operated. Great food, conveniently located in the foothills just off the 210 freeway, exit Osborne. Breakfast, lunch or dinner with a glass of wine or a cold beer, what's not to love?!?! read more

Wonderful service, food and atmosphere. We've lived in the valley for 6 months now and this was the first place we tried because we didn't have a fridge yet. The staff was so welcoming and quick! It gets a little crowded after 9:30 but it's never overwhelming or too loud. The food is of great quality and the portions are wonderful for their pricing. When we can spare the money to go out for breakfast, it's always here. My fiancee loves their Fir Fir! read more

Excellent, delicious food served with a smile. We are never disappointed. We love the breakfast and are glad they have vegan/vegetarian options! read more

What a wonderful hidden find! My husband was craving Ethiopian and we didn't feel like making a trek into LA. Don't let the name fool you, though the standard selections looked good - the focused but delightful Ethiopian cuisine menu was a win. We had both a vegetarian and spicy beef dishes with injera, along with a sambusa to start in a very relaxed western motif ambiance. Very chill. The flavor and spice combinations were delicious. Along with the quality of preparation, the staff was wonderfully kind. Don't let the unassuming exterior fool you, it is worth the stop if you want an Ethiopian fix in the part of the valley. :-). Thank you and we will be back! read more

Ranch Side Cafe - Veggie and beef dishes on injera! Delicious! - American Near Me - Sylmar, California

See all

this is a place with a lot of movie stars and cowboys and cowgirls and a lot of bullshit and good food. The cook is great, just relax and think of being out in the boondocks. this is the place to go in this area. Full of super models for waitresses and horse right out side the door. great place. to eat and relax and watch the ranchers come in and talk about horses and polo. read more

We love coming here for their Ethiopian food, especially on the weekend. It's great to have an Ethiopian restaurant in the valley, saves a trip to Fairfax. Hands down, the best Shiro Wat you have ever tasted, highly recommend! Love the veggie combo too! The staff is really nice and they are always quick with take out. read more

We came for breakfast... Got the steak fir fir with eggs ( which isn't on the menu btw) and it was super Tay with a nice little spicy kick. My wife got the chicken fried steak with biscuits and gravy. Great gravy and fresh tasting biscuits. The coffee is also fresh and from a local roaster. I will come back and try more of the Ethiopian cuisine. read more

We heard about this place on FB and decided to try it out. I got a breakfast burritto with sausage and bacon. Excellent. and the hash browns were perfect. My wife had the chorizo and eggs. Delicious. My daughter had eggs, hashbrowns, bacon and sausage. Everything was tasty and the service was good. They also made some fresh tortilla chips for my wife. We plan on coming back and exploring more of the menu. read more

Food seemed like it was old and it was cold. Life's too short to eat food that is blah. Last resort if you are starving. My husband said it was like they had food out, then put it in the microwave. read more

Ham, cheese, over easy egg Croissant is AMAZING! Will be stoping here every time I'm heading up North.

Absolutely beautiful food!!! Three of us went there after a day at the range and we all loved our meals. We had the Ethiopian dishes of Sambusa (beef), the Vegetarian Plate and the Awaze Tibs. Each and every meal was top shelf and the staff were all very professional yet friendly at the same time. We will definitely be back. read more

I was surprised about how wonderful the food is here, the quality i ordered a burrito and they were huge and delicious i wanna thank them for all the hospitality and be back again soon from seattle read more

Very good Cafe style food! Great price and good portions. Would for sure eat here again.

Where to begin? The service was so bad that it was a complete embarrassment to the concept of customer service. To say the waitress was rude is an understatement, but it will have to suffice. The food was inedible to the point where we left our meals untouched before getting up and leaving. Neither their sorry excuse for Ethiopian food, nor their unappetizing Philly cheesesteak sandwich appealed to me or my boyfriend. Pretty much the only saving grace for our extremely disappointing experience was the guitarist in the corner who was playing pleasant music all the while we spent waiting far too long to be poorly served. We took our business elsewhere and will thusly never be returning. read more

Came here for a late breakfast and this has always been one of if not my favorite place to eat in the valley! The inside has a nice Spanish/western vibe to it which is extremely authentic being it's located in equestrian styled neighborhood! Love it! Ordered the breakfast sampler which was extremely huge I could barely finish it! And extremely worth it for the price, a meal like this in LA would easily cost 20+ and taste half as good so I definitely would recommend trying it! Their homemade salsa is also to die for! They're doing a great job with COVID and have the option of scanning a code with your phone to get a digital menu or some ready to read at the front! Plenty of outdoor seating spaced away from each other so there was never a worry in my mind about breaking any regulations! Food was so good I even took a burrito to go for dinner which I never do lol! Try this wonderful family owned restaurant I promise you'll enjoy it as much as I did!!! read more

Small case with great service. Also, in addition to the usual coffee shop fare, they have an Ethiopian menu! Delicious!

I have to agree with another reviewer. Super nice people! Love the ambience of the restaurant. The problem? Overpriced mediocre food at best. Had a turkey club & a side salad. The salad was wilted and brown. How can the chef not notice this? Should've been thrown out days ago. The turkey club was made with pressed, processed meat slices. Not fresh at all. Haven't seen a sandwich like that since my high school cafeteria days. Sorry Ranch Side, one & done.... read more

Serves Ethiopian food as well as customary cafe fare. Had tibs in injera bread (spicy stewed beef in a sort of crêpe) - delicious! The woman running the place was very pleasant and helpful. No negatives, didn't get to try any of the other dishes. read more

Kinda a meh-type place. But, I enjoyed what I ate. I had the quesadilla with carnitas. The carnitas were a lil crispy which I really enjoyed. The restaurants lay out was horrible. It looks like it was abandoned for many years, and they just re-opened last week. The waitress was friendly, a lil pushy, but seemed positive. The prices were what I expected. I may come back again solely due to proximity. read more

Ranch Side Cafe - Cowboy style eats!!! Love it! - American Near Me - Sylmar, California

Our whole group enjoyed their food. The portions for the kids meals were just right. The Mexican food was seasoned well and priced just right. My friend enjoyed her beautifully arranged salad. Breakfast is served all day. :-) So I went with the French toast slam. I was not disappointed. Will definitely come back when we visit the nearby Discovery Cube. The service was great. read more

I love this place. Their staff is made up of very sweet people and I love their food. I'd say this place is sort of hidden at the foot of the hill on Foothill Blvd. and I love going here early on a Saturday morning. It's so peaceful and pleasant. I usually get anything with pancakes. I always get coffee. If you're too lazy to fry your own eggs or even brew your own coffee even if it's as simple as operating a Keurig, you should definitely check this place out. read more
