    Decent ramen. The broth is good. The toppings are solid. Would not recommend the edamame, though. Dry and heated up in the microwave.

My favorite items to get here are the Tom Yum soup, they let you choose the protein and the spice level and have an option for both bowl or a cup. The cup is about a pint size which is a great portion. I love getting the Tofu with this soup because I feel like it soaks in the flavor and breaks up the yummy spices. For the different levels of spice, just a heads up that there is a huge difference for a medium in a cup versus a medium in a bowl. Both are delish, but the cup medium is SPICY in the best way. I also really enjoy their basil fried rice with chicken. You can take the sauteed char from the basil and the medium in this is also spot on for us. Maybe one day I'll be brave enough to try a higher heat, because Thai chilis are no joke! All in all, we frequent here often since moving up here and are so glad to have a staple in the area and in our regular rotation.

On the menu it said that the beef sampler would feed 2-3 people, but we barely finished it with all 5 of us eating it. All of the food was super fresh and delicious, even all of the side dishes. Hwang Dae Gham is located in a non-descript strip mall with some closed store fronts, so plenty of parking. My daughter and I were in town and needed to visit in the Northern suburbs, so afterwards decided to have lunch at a place that had meaning for us. Unfortunately, it was closed on Mondays so chose another Korean restaurant. Hwang Dae Gham ended up a great choice. We came soon after it opened, and it was already busy. It is a family owned business, and they obviously take great pride in their food and service. We had a chance to eat a lot of their non-BBQ offerings, and every one of them was excellent. Started with two appetizer portions: mul-mandu (small, bite-size steamed dumplings...supposed to be only pork but I swear I tasted seafood/fish in it...very good...reminded me of eating pelmini in it's size and density); the other was a small portion of japchae which we devoured...usually not a fan of this style of Korean mung-bean noodles, but really enjoyed it. We got two entrees (didn't share for once, so each got what we wanted). I got the squid bibim-bap (mixed rice in a stone bowl)...it's important to look at the pictures, cause it clearly explains the difference between the normal bibim-bap. They basically put a large portion of the squid-bokum, on top of rice...missing the normal cold greens. It was different, and I loved it. It was served with the requisite gochujang sauce, but you don't need it. It's already pre-seasoned. My daughter got the Gamja-Tang (spicy soup with potato and pork neck), and she really enjoyed it....like most Korean hot soups, great for a chilly February Chicago day. All of it comes with side dishes and purple rice. We especially liked the sweet glazed potatoes, picked cucumbers, and sliced mung bean pancake. Service was very warm and consistent throughout. It was just a beautiful opportunity to have a great meal and spend a lot of time with my adult daughter, reminiscing about the past and planning for the future. The entire Hwang Dae Gham environment was very conducive to that. I really wish I had two stomachs so I could sample the other dishes on the menu...all of it looked so good. We ended up bringing home most of the entrees, and it was delicious re-heated. Really inspires me to explore K-Town more when I get home.

I tried the Bao of the day :barbecued…read morepork , the spicy chicken, dumpling, and the Ramen of the day, which was a yellow curry. along with a Tokyo old-fashioned as my drink. I will describe the place as more of a modern take on Ramen with Korean elements. everything tasted excellent in my opinion. I was torn between getting the yellow curry, Ramen of the day or the pork belly Ramen. To help with the decision They gave me a side of their pork broth to try for the next time I come in. So I ordered the yellow curry Ramen of the day since the pork belly is on their menu daily. The broth for both was so good. Since it was just me dining, I did have plenty of leftovers which were just as good a couple days later. Especially since the tofu in the Ramen really soaked up some of the flavor of the broth. I will definitely come here again, especially for that Tokyo old-fashioned. It was delicious. It was made with a tequila versus a whiskey and I think about it every day.
