Visited Kyoto Ramen 5 days after their grand opening. We were seated immediately for dinner on a weekday. Inside is Asian themed and with some anime decor. Our waiter greeted us fairly quickly. Two of the appetizers we wanted to order they did not have. We opted for shrimp tempura. They tasted exactly like the frozen ones from Costco. When our appetizer came, we had to flag down a waiter for plates. The plates they gave us were paper plates. We were also given plastic forks. This gave off a very food court vibe. If I'm dining in, I expect to be using silverware and regular plates! We ordered Miso Ramen and Tonkotsu Ramen. They were both mediocre at best. Soup for both ramen were warm and not hot. The chashu (pork belly) was all full of fat. Barely any meat on it. It was not good. I've had better. A great addition to Gurnee but I have no desire dining here again. read more

The place is so cozy, clean and well decorated. My fiancé and I both got miso ramen(I got the spicy one) and an order of egg rolls. The ramen was so delicious I couldn't stop eating we were seated pretty quickly and the staff were polite, welcoming and helpful with our questions. This was my first time visiting Kyoto ramen. I decided to check this place out for a lunch date with my husband. The ambiance inside of the restaurant is so cool and we loved the decor, very trendy. For an appetizer I got the gyoza, which was good. The appetizer came out but they never brought any appetizer plates, I think like it was a bit messy after dipping our gyoza in sauce. For drinks I tried the passion fruit lemonade, it was okay. The server was pretty nice, he gave us a run down of the menu and he gave us his recommendations. We tried two ramen bowls, I got the steak ramen. I thought my ramen was good, my husband thought that both of the broths tasted like seaweed. I think he was hoping for more of a bone broth flavor. Ordered delivery through Uber Eats when I was feeling under the weather, and remembered I have been wanting to try Kyoto since they opened. Delivery came on time, but the order was incorrect - the Tonkatsu was missing key ingredients listed on the menu, and the one ingredient I asked to be removed was still in the bowl. The chashu was also really fatty, I've never experienced it like that. The side of kimchi was so spicy that I couldn't take more than one bite. I love kimchi, and I love spice, but it was way too much. Maybe we will give it another shot... other reviews and photos looked good. read more

I didn't see that they offer coke or Pepsi products but they offered different alcoholic and no alcoholic beverages that look great. Service: 10/10 I don't think people are aware that there is a button on the table that needs to be pressed whenever they need service so I did see a few people standing up to get their attention. Service was fast and friendly. Ambiance: 8/10 The same song was playing over and over on the speakers which did get annoying, but it didn't affect the ambience as much. We came in around 2 on a Monday, it wasn't busy although there were others in the restaurant. The service was great. Most importantly the ramen was superb. Normally we drive 30+ minutes to get authentic ramen, so it's amazing to have something great in town. I had the shredded beef ramen, husband got the pork belly, daughter tofu and son meatball. I opened the door to this place and was totally surprised. For the outside it looked more like a storefront, but inside...wow, just wow. The decor was vibrant, with a trendy Asian feel. Each table had a little call button to let staff know when you were ready to order. The food was delicious...I had the creamy chicken Ramen and it did not disappoint. I've been excited for this place to open for over a month. I was waiting before they announced a date and when they finally did via Instagram and I saw they were offering free gyoza to the first 30 tables sat I was ecstatic. That's where the disappointment began. My friend and I arrived at 3, the time quoted in the Instagram advert, and promptly found out from someone leaving the restaurant that they'd actually opened an hour earlier and given out all the free gyoza already. I figured "well that sucks but hey at least there might be a good local ramen option" so I was still pretty excited at this point. I waited in line for 45 minutes, I was prepared to wait and didn't really care but this number will come back up later. After we'd sat down my friend and I spent about 5 minutes looking over the menu and used the button on the table to call the waiter over. When the waiter arrived at the table we placed our food order, miso ramen for me and seafood ramen with added pork chashu for my friend, and chicken karaage for us to share, and my friend asked what was in one of the drinks on their drink menu. The waiter replied "Some sec and like some food coloring, I think." He was so uneasy to provide that answer that it was clear he had no idea what was in any of the items on the menu. Then, we started to wait for the food, twenty minutes go by and I hear the runner ask our waiter why we don't have food and what we ordered. The waiter repeats the entree order but forgets the to mention the chashu, the appetizer, and the drink. Another ten minutes go by and finally my friend's seafood ramen shows up, but without the pork chashu, they claim they ran out, and without the mussels that the menu claims are meant to be in it. Looking at photos from what appears to be yesterday's soft launch on Google, they forgot the mussels that time too. After the seafood ramen was delivered to our table, the table next to us that had just sat down maybe five minutes earlier was mortified that they were already out of chashu 3 hours after they opened for their grand opening and decided to just get up and leave. They remarked about our 45 minute wait time and the fact that the meal was not even prepared correctly as well. When the ramen was delivered my friend felt it didn't appear appetizing, it didn't seem like we were ever going to get what we ordered or end up having a good experience so I again used the button to call our waiter over and told him that we would be leaving since it had already been 30 minutes and I'm not sure we're ever going to get our food. I also noticed one other fairly concerning problems on top of my direct experience. All of the staff in the restaurant wear these black gloves their entire shift, they touch their faces, their clothes, bring out food, clean surfaces, and pick things up off the floor with these gloves on and do not change them. Overall, this was a pretty bad experience and I don't think I'd go back unless they committed to running this like a real restaurant. I feel bad for everyone involved that their grand opening went so poorly but this is not a good experience. I didn't really care about the wait times or the disorganized staff, I care that their inability to be professionals rendered this an entirely disappointing experience. read more

Ramen is one of those things where even if it's bad, it's still pretty good. This ramen is middle of the road. I've had better but I've definitely had worse. I got the tantan ramen and my husband got the spicy miso ramen. Both were quite good. Neither were very spicy at all, but they did have sriracha at the table. My friends and I have made this our go-to spot. Recently, they've upgraded the menu and have so many options. I always order the tonkotsu ramen or the Korean beef bulgogi; the waiters are attentive. I visited the grand opening, and it has improved! I've recommended this spot to others, and everyone has enjoyed it. I'm not for sure what type of soup but all I can tell you is that it had noodles with what looked like thin slices of fat, but he said he likes it. We had the potstickers and they were good. I'm sorry I didn't take pictures but I will next time. We went in the afternoon like 2pm and we were there only ones there. The only thing I'd change first if I were manager there, would be the hospitality. Have the service person smile a little like he/she wants to be there. I was super excited to try Kyoto Ramen but unfortunately left very disappointed. The overall service was pretty slow, taking about 2-2.5 hours overall but I get that it was opening day so I can somewhat forgive the slow service. I've been to several grand openings and that is usually pretty expected. They advertised their grand opening at 3pm and free appetizers to the first 30 customers but when we arrived at 2:45pm, there were apparently already open for some time. According to their Facebook post later in the day, apparently they opened at noon, so that was extremely disappointing. Why advertise you're opening at 3pm and promise free food but then actually open earlier? My entire party was deeply disappointed with the food in several ways. First, the portions of the main entree seemed smaller than one would expect for the price. Second, nearly everything we tried tasted as if it was just bulk bought frozen and then reheated. The egg rolls and shrimp tempura were soft and chewy, bao buns extremely doughy, and the veggies in our entree were flavorless. Lastly, the server for the table adjacent to us lost his customer's credit card after going to go charge it which deeply concerned my entire party and each of us we wish we had cash on us to avoid a similar incident. I hope this is just a rough opening and things improve, I plan on visiting again in the future as I really do hope this becomes a fantastic addition to the Gurnee area. read more

Ramen was yummy! I had the miso tofu ramen, and the broth was delicious. There weren't as many fun things in it like other places, but what was there was very good - sliced mushrooms and roasted corn gave it a lovely sweetness. My husband has the spicy miso ramen and enjoyed that very much. Appetizer prices are high, but other than that, yeah, we'll be back. Nice to have decent ramen without having to drive 40 minutes! Decor is fun and if you're into anime you'll love the multiple screens showing that. read more

As someone who has had many different ramens all over I would give Kyoto ramen a 2.5/5. The service was very slow but could be due to the low staff which is not their fault. People were sitting without service for a long time. Staff were friendly however. The food itself was okay taste I got the spicy miso ramen the spice was there but no other flavor. the chashu seemed as if it was boiled which was not pleasant. Fun vibe. We expected a dull oriental place, but instead found upbeat music and spacious room for seating. The drink menu is very authentic Japanese, which I loved (give me Ramune, Calpico, or green tea anyway!), but my partner didn't (no Coke. Really?) I had the tonkatsu ramen, which was very good - delicious, spot on pork slices in a tasty broth with ramen that was neither overcooked or undercooked. My partner had the shrimp tempura bento, and while the side dishes were good, the tempura batter was too thick & heavy and there were only 2 shrimp. So, some good stuff, some bad. Everything was better than expected. When we walked in I was first wow'd by the lights and the anime on the wall, as for the food. The broth was so rich and the portions were well sized for the price. Went with my friend and my girlfriend and they both loved their meals as well. The egg rolls were very crunchy and definitely the best I've had at any spot so far imo.
