Red Horse has made me a convert for B&B's! When I found out I was put up in a B&B for a business…read moretrip, I inwardly groaned. I need a lot of electrical outlets, and I'm pretty picky about food, so I generally prefer hotels for work. But Red Horse has changed my mind with their scrumptious food, fabulous rooms, and fantastic hospitality!
First, Darlene, Phil, and their family are absolutely lovely, and they really made me feel like part of the family. Sometimes Grandpa Carl joined us for breakfast, and he's a hoot! He has so many stories ... he has lived thru the dust bowl, multiple wars, and lived all over the US and Europe!
I stayed in the Rose Room on the first night, and it is absolutely lovely and sparkling clean. This room felt like a designer bedroom fit for a magazine! I have many electronic gadgets, and one of my pet peeves is when there aren't enough outlets (most old buildings), or when the outlets are in inconvenient places. I pack an extension cord in my suitcase, but that was not needed here! Not only were there more than enough outlets, they were placed appropriately! ( Just look at my pictures!) The Rose Room is very roomy, and I was able to do my morning workout without having to move anything around. In addition, the Rose Room has a door directly out to the patio, so you can have your morning coffee out in the fresh morning air in your own private nook!
I spent the rest of my week's stay in the Wild West Room. The room had a more standard B&B layout, less designer and more "themed", but the fantastic bathroom more than makes up for it. The large, deep clawfoot bath was absolutely luxurious, and even included nice lavender bathbombs! Check out the old-school water closet! I noted a towel warmer next to the tub that adds a touch of luxury (but I didn't need it for my summer stay).
Both rooms had fridges with a tiny freezer and a microwave. Each room had its own air conditioning that you can control to your liking. The rooms also had filtered water included and a variety of soda pop drinks in the fridge (included) and a coffee maker with coffee and tea. Each room had a lock on the door that you can set with your own code. I never felt I needed to lock my door, but I know it's probably wiser to do so. (There were only two other guests, both who seemed very nice, and I didn't bother locking my door).
Also, in the dining area there were always fruit, some finer teas, real half and half, and sometimes treats like cupcakes or lemon bars.
Breakfast was different each morning, and Darlene would ask us if we had any requests or would let us know what she planned to make in case we wanted something else. There was also a big pot of fresh brewed coffee. You have to stay to taste the variety of food Darlene makes! Most of the food was homegrown. They have eggs from their chickens and the herbs and veggies were almost always from their farm. I had pickled watermelon rinds for the first time - grandpa Carl's recipe! One of the guests had signed up for the full inclusive meals, so she was getting lunch and dinner too. I might look into that for next time.
If you stay here, you HAVE to stay for AT LEAST 3 days! (Not a requirement, but I'm say'n ... you are doing yourself a disservice if you don't stay long enough to fully experience this place!). This historic Adobe house is filled with stories. Everywhere you look you can find another story. On the walls of the Western room I saw pictures showing the racehorses Grandpa Carl owned. The Rose Room had antiques from when Darlene lived in England. There are furniture from the original owners from the 1800's with the owner's initials carved into it. I didn't get the chance to see the art studio or small museum ~ I was here for about a week, ....I guess I'll have to prioritize that for my next visit!
All in all, this is the BEST B&B I have been to! If work brings me to Albuquerque, I'm going to INSIST that I stay here!!
========EDIT/ADDITION=======
I am heartbroken to have to report that grandpa Carl has passed away. I didn't want to take him out of my original review, I didn't realize that I never posted the review!
I am here on another trip this time staying in the Heritage room, which is next to the Rose room. Everything is fantastic. The only thing that takes some adjusting to is that there really isn't a closet. But the room is so spacious and comfortable, that it really isn't an issue. The Heritage room also has a door to an outside patio just like the Rose room. This is a start of a six day stay for me, and I am very excited to be staying here again!
