Affordable and Comfortable Stay Near Old Town Albuquerque - With a Few Caveats We stayed at Sandia Peak Inn - Old Town ABQ (a Howard Johnson by Wyndham), and I'll start by saying this: the price was definitely right. While it's not a luxury hotel, we more than got our money's worth, and I'll give an honest, balanced review. One of the main reasons we chose this property was the availability of EV charging. They offer both a J1772 and a Tesla destination charger, with a $10 nightly fee to use them. That was a great convenience and worked without issue. We booked the accessible oversized king room, which was very spacious, nicely decorated, and included a comfortable bed. We thought it had a sofa but found a day bed instead. The room also featured a small work table and a nice easy chair--well equipped for a short stay. The parking lot is tight, with narrow spaces and limited room, but our reserved EV charging spot helped avoid problems. Breakfast was modest but acceptable. There was a waffle maker, juice machine, coffee, peanut butter (the only visible protein), various breads, jams, and some overripe bananas. Vegetarian-friendly, but not very filling. One downside we experienced was related to smoking. Although our room was non-smoking, the moment I stepped outside in the morning, someone was smoking nearby. While I don't know how frequent this is, it would be preferable if the property were entirely smoke-free, especially near room entrances. The neighborhood felt like classic Old Town Albuquerque. I didn't feel unsafe, but I wouldn't recommend walking the area late at night. The exterior of the property has been nicely styled with Southwestern décor, which adds charm despite the budget-conscious operations. I hate spending more than $100 a night on a hotel room. Heck, might even knock that dollar figure down by $40. If I find a recently renovated Motel 6 I'm a happy camper. Sandia Peak Inn made me think I splurged at $188 for the wrong reasons. GF and I had left Amarillo, Texas early headed to Albuquerque early to explore as I'd hadn't been there since I was a kid. Checked out a few things; called the hotel to ask about early check in. Guy on the phone asked when I wanted to check in? I said 2pm. He then told me it was $50 to check in at that time. Turns out looking at the hotels.com website...that was the normal check in time! We just ran around and wasted time. Strapless bra for the GF for her new dress. OMG, weed is legal here! Hit up a dispensary; my first! Put the initial phone call in the past and walked in the door. There's my cc info on a print out. CCV number too; how does this conglomerate expedia/hotels/priceline work? Had to run my card twice for the $188 plus another $100 for "incidentals". We get to the room finally and wanted to unload our ice chest including my GFs insulin..mini fridge is unplugged. Also, it's over 90 degrees when we visited. Room PTAC was off. Something I've never encountered. Usually, it's at least cooling/heating your room when you arrive. I paid almost $200 for this? Hot tub was fine; while it works so well for pornos it was more just for show. Speaking of "show" alot of the local accents depicting the Southwest were just tacky. Most of you don't speak electrical but see the pics. All homes have light switches we use. It's basic one switch is one small notch in a plastic plate. Most of us have a plate that has two switches. See the pic of one switch with drywall peeking through. Cheap, cheap, and more cheap adorned the aged walls. More romantic hot tub weekend crushed by Sandia; enter the giant two GM SUVs with a million kids that barreled into the door next to us. Worst place to stay !! Do not stay here by any means . Rooms are nasty , owners are nasty . Don't care about their customers! I will be disputing the charges with my bank . We were asked to leave & when we asked the owner to give us some time , he refused . We were verbally harassed by the owner when I called to have the reservation cancelled & was told "shut the f up , stupid b" . We specifically told the owner we had 3 adults with us for OUR reservation. As for a different reservation, that had nothing to do with us. We did not smoke in the rooms , other than vape, & no damages were caused (i have a video of the room before we left). read more

Stayed here almost a week. Lots of parking, 24/7 wifi, good breakfast, professional staff, very big bed and comfortable, big pillows, near by shopping and super market, clean swimming pool, close to highway, quiet gated and peace full, will come back again. read more

Off the old Route 66. Love this place. Clean rooms, very clean bathrooms. Got the queen suite so I could stay on the ground floor. The bathroom had a curved shower rod and nice thick shower curtain and a heat lamp. Microwave and refrigerator. The windows don't open in the rooms they are sealed shut perhaps for security, but the air conditioner works great. High quality valet to place your luggage on, huge 70in large screen TV with plenty of satellite channels. The lady who runs the place Kay is delightful, greets you with a good smile. A good motel! It's in the historic district and close to lots of restaurants, a Ross, and a Five Below. Check in was easy. The owners are very nice and it's family owned and operated. The room we had was great. It was clean, there was a working TV, comfy beds, and an AC. Personally, i loved that it was so clean. The towels are good too. There is a pool! It's square, small, and 4,6" deep. Definitely not dangerous but big enough to have some fun. The continental breakfast...leaves something to be desired, but there's waffles and Twinkie's, and that's enough for my kiddo! Anyways, it's cheap, comfy, and clean. I do recommend! read more

Very strange. This motel is also listed as a Howard Johnson and is painted bright orange. I'm just sayin'-- It's located on Central Avenue SE. Anyway, it's a good place, neighborhood is a little sketchy but I felt safe. It was clean and up to date. We chose it for being pet friendly for our little bird. Manager was super nice. We like motels for the ease of unpacking our car so they work well for us. Downside was that there was drag racing at night on Central Ave, but the cops were passing out tickets. Ear plugs took care of the problem. Never travel without them! Yes, I'd stay here again. If you stay here, be sure to have a steak dinner at the Monte Carlo down the street. It may not be the fanciest hotel with a big name, but it was hands down one of the best stays I've ever had anywhere. The staff was incredibly friendly, the property is cute, and most of all, it was clean! The continental breakfast was amazing. Waffles, cereal, yogurt, toast, juice, and coffee! Just right. Not too much and not too little. The bed and pillows were comfortable and I slept well. Almost too well! Had a hard time pulling myself out of bed. There was a mini fridge, microwave, TV, desk area, ice bucket, etc. It suited our needs perfect and there was plenty of places to eat dinner at near by. If I'm ever in Albuquerque again, this is where I will be staying 100%. read more

My 94-yr-old friend and I stayed just one night and the hotel is very nice, although a little run down. Freshening up would help. But the young woman at the front desk couldn't have been more friendly and helpful. Her whole attitude was happy and fun and she really cared about our comfort. Not sure what all the hype is about. It's a motel in Albuquerque. Not the Ritz Carlton. Pretty good rates, bed was decent for a motel, but my curtain would NOT close. Spent a good amount of time trying to get it juuuust right so no one wandering past with curious peepers could see in. When I went to tell the front office about this the next morning, there was just a pile of room keys next to a note saying to leave them there. Usually motels this size don't offer a free continental breakfast, so that is a nice addition. I did not, however, find any appetizing fare and left hungry. I really do appreciate the effort though. read more

This place was great. Don't judge a book by its cover. There is a gate around the front and it is on Route 66, that being said: 1. We expected noise due to facing route 66 - it was quiet. 2. It had FREE electric charging stations two- someone was parked in one space that was not electric, but the other worked fine. 3. The Taco Bus just a five minute walk from the motel- excellent Mexican food. 4. My wife forgot her earings ( very small ones) on the base of the desk light. We called the man who runs the place, he looked and called us back, but could not find it. We called again and asked if we could look. They were sitting right in the same place that my wife left them. He was extremely helpful. 5. The room was clean. 6. Based on the reviews and pictures, I was expecting at least a decent 2-star hotel. Unfortunately, this is more in line with a 1-star rated hotel. It's a basic Inn with some interesting and unique-looking decor. The rooms are very dated and in need of a major refresh. The exterior door didn't lock, there is an infant-quality plastic mattress protector that sounds and feels like you're sleeping on a plastic bag, the bathroom door hits the toilet, the shower faucet was messed up, the water from the sink faucet had a cloudy color to it (the public water is fine here - must be the plumbing), signs of dirt and concerning black grime in areas, and the list goes on. In addition, this location is right next to a busy street. Expect lots of noises from loud cars and people that will keep you up. It doesn't help that the door and HVAC aren't sealed up very well (you can see light). The breakfast is about as basic as it gets with the usual dry cereal, waffle machine, bad coffee, etc. It smells like an old cafeteria. There are new owners for this establishment, who were friendly, and helpful. But we were only here for two nights and didn't plan on spending the entire stay working with them to address every single thing in their room. Especially considering how obvious many of these issues were. The management/owners need to seriously check all of the rooms prior to checking in guests. Overall, this place needs a lot of work. Until then, it should be re-classified as a 1-star hotel/inn, and the price dropped. Otherwise, at the price we paid, there were considerably better options in the area. read more

Great place to stay, in part at least because of the fabulous family that runs the place! So sweet, they went out of their way to ensure we had everything we needed. To tell the truth, I never stayed in a motel before. But I picked this place instead of modern hotel in downtown because Sandia Peak Inn was a safe place to stay, clean, and very quiet. Large rooms, a little older, but man do you ever feel like your are "home". The owner lives on the property and takes great pride in all she does and it shows. The motel is nothing special other than it's a bet on Route 66 and that's worth something and we were heading out of town that way. We would score the Sandia Peak Inn 4.5 if we could. We wanted to stay at a local place when we found the inn. When I saw the reviews describing it as funky, I was there. The exterior of the motel is full of personality. Bright colors, fountains, interesting statuary. I loved that. The parking lot has an iron fence all the way around and they close one gate at night which made me feel a little better about our car being there. The grounds were kept up very well. They also have a rosebush which smelled better than anything I smelled at the botanic garden the day before Because we were staying for 4 nights, we upgraded to a suite. I would not recommend the suite if you like right angles and symmetry ( you can see what I mean when you look at other reviewers' photos) but it was fine for us. Overall, the room was clean and comfortable but needed some updating. The room did not have as much personality as I expected after seeing the exterior. The paint had stains, there were holes in the walls, the refrigerator rocked, and the upholstered chair needed cleaning. But housekeeping did a really good job. The biggest complaint I had was not about the motel at all. The inn is on Central Ave, which is a main drag. We heard revving engines and loud exhausts at all hours. This is not a ding against the motel, I just thought you should be aware. We didn't use the pool but it looked clean and nice. There was a complimentary breakfast each morning that looked decent and included waffle batter and a cooker. However we did not partake. And the staff was top notch; from office people to housekeeping. Despite the noise, we would stay there again and we definitely recommend it to you. read more

We had a decent enough (not terrific, mind you, but decent enough) stay at this motel early on during our recent vacation that we opted to return for another night at the end of the vacation. There are both pluses and minuses to note about staying here, though. On the plus side, the hotel is run by a warm, friendly proprietor who goes out of her way to make guests feel welcome. The rooms are clean, with a combination of updated features and 1950s/1960s-era roadside kitsch. This property has decorative elements to it that harken back to the days of Historic Route 66, giving it a memorable feel and quality that you won't often find nowadays. The hotel also has excellent wifi. On the minus side, this property is located on a loud, busy road; and that loudness subsides only slightly later at night. Although one of our rooms was temperature-controlled well throughout our stay, the other room was consistently too warm or too cold. Finally, when the main proprietor is unavailable to help/greet customers, her replacement does NOT wear masks to keep guests safe from COVID. Also worth noting, proper enforcement of mask wearing was not in operation in the breakfast area, even among people who were not eating there at the time. read more

Well, as I said several times to both front deak and man, I thought I had arranged for a noon checkout. If I was wrong, ok. It was too late by the time they came to the door and once again you've doubled down on the fact that because I was wrong, I deserved to have a very intimidating man come to my room, yell in front of class (which he did know about) and threaten me. I really wanted someone to understand how scared, violated, and attacked I felt. It seems you are missing the point. Nice motel on Route 66 near Old Town run by a very nice couple. We stayed 2 nights at the beginning or our trip and another night at the end. It is right on the highway, so road noise was loud the first stay and the lights were bright, so we covered the top of the window and turned on white noise to drown the sound, so no problem. The second stay we were in a room on the corner, and the window was in the back so there was no noise or bright lights. The rooms were clean and well maintained. Breakfast was minimal, but they say "continental breakfast" so that's appropriate. The couple running the motel were very nice and accommodating. When we go back to Albuquerque, we will be staying there! read more

Housekeeping knocked on our door at 9:30am.. check out time is 11:00... they knocked again at 10:00.. and then again at 10:30. And once again at 1050. We opened the door and they said o!
