Now see, I still have a soft spot for Rajous as a newsagent because it was one of my high school lunchtime haunts (it saved me clogging my arteries on the food in the kebab shop two doors down, that's for sure). I'd agree with what one girl said - the sandwiches are a bit of a grim culinery experience. They're the cheap ones that a lot of newsagents do where the meat looks a bit lurid....but this grocers offers a bit extra, such as hot food in the morning - instant hangover cure! I really hope the owner hasn't beomce a bit of a grumpypants as has been suggested because he's always been super nice to me, and he remembers me and my pals from schooldays which is welcoming! The booze is expensive, but so is everything in the recent economic downturn, so I guess you have to suck it up. It's handy having an offy if you're staying in the fairly new neighbouring student halls. And since this is student junction, I'm sure people take advantage of the fact Rajous has a license. I still stay faithful to Rajous. It might not be the cheapest in some areas but then no one can be as bad as R S McColl in my eyes and it's a pound for a Creme Egg these days, anyway. So if you're skint, get a packet of 20p crisps and shut yer face. This guy's bacon rolls have scared away my hangovers so I'll fight this shop's corner!

This 24 hour Spar is a very valuable asset to this end of Great Western Road. By this I do not mean, the world's biggest range of crisps. I mean they have all the usual chocolate, crisps and fizzy juice as well as ciggies, rolling papers and tobacco. However, you'll also find good two for £2 deals on litres of fruit juice (perfect for picking up on the way home for a Sunday morning breakfast). You'll also find a good range of - slightly overpriced - cheeses, meats and homemade samosas. Meanwhile, for the fast food folks among you there is a pretty good selection of frozen pizzas, chips, burgers and, of course, ice creams near the back of the shop. They even have an impressive range of Scot Pac stuff including scissors, super glue, thread and all that kind of stuff that you never think about until you need. Absolutely excellent.

It's a Spar, they sell Spar stuff. It's self reviewing, people know what to expect from a Spar. You…read moreget milk, bread, crisps etc. It is open 24 hours and is near me so it's useful. Does that really warrant five stars? No. This gets five stars because of the staff, who are some of the warmest, friendliest, most patient convenience store staff I've ever encountered. I just popped in to get a pint of milk. I wasn't feeling great, I have a bit of a cold. The guy behind the counter assured me that all I needed was a sunny weekend and I'd be right as rain. I nodded politely. He then gave me double finger guns THEN a double thumbs up. I left feeling much better.

There are two major advantages to this store:…read more 1. They stay open 'til midnight 2. They apparently consistently overstock on fresh fruit, veg, meat and fish - which means they then need to reduce these items when not enough of them are bought. So that's ideal if you're looking for a something for a cheap dinner the same evening (or if you have plenty of freezer space). There are issues, though. Although it's a large store it has huge rushes around midday and 5pm and the crowds don't disperse very easily. The queueing system seems to confuse a lot of customers (it's easy, folks, stand to the left if you want a traditional checkout, stand to the right if you want a self service one). Even when they get it right, at peak times these queues obstruct the fresh juices and the fresh vegetables. The timings for restocking shelves also seem to be far from logical and are usually planned to run right into the 5pm rush. Actually, this seems to be a problem for every Tesco Metro I've visited, so perhaps this store can't be blamed by itself. It is a fair bit bigger than the other convenience store branches of Tesco in the West End and they do have a good range of products. It is handy for a quick lunch deal or to grab a few items on the way home. Although be careful, being a convenience store means the prices of some items can be weirdly high, sometimes you might be better going to Waitrose or M&S. So clearly it has its place on Byres Road but I wish they'd find a way to fix those niggly issues.
