There's something about this instructive like name - Stop and Shop - that I find genuinely…read moreendearing as well as a little bit annoying. This is potentially the reason for me not entirely loving this little place. Yes, it has milk, papers and bog roll - the necessities no? But, it's nothing special. The stock is filled with all the basic run of the mill newsagent products. The prices and just as you'd expect to pay for these products in these products in a newsagent. Meanwhile, the staff offer mediocre greetings and services. So, it's alright if you want to pop in for one or two basics and this is the handiest place for it. Otherwise, I'd prefer to go elsewhere with a little bit more character and/or a wider range of stock including some more unusual items.

I remember when I was about nine, I used to go…read moreon my paper round with my best friend and after we'd finished we would split our pay of £3.50 and head to R S Mccolls' to blow it all on sweets. Today, I still have a pretty sweet tooth and usually pop in here to get some wine, a lottery ticket and plenty of sugary treats. Very useful newsagents and the staff are always really chatty. It also has an ATM attached to it, which is great as there isn't another one nearby.

Unfortunately, this newsagent doesn't have one that lights up or have a picture of a teacake on it. But, fear not, if does have some Tunnock's advertising on it's small plastic and rather retro (for this read old fashioned) canopy. This alone makes it worth about one star in my book. Meanwhile, the other stars are for: service, prices and character. You see, this is not a massive shop by any manner or means. Therefore, it does have something of a limited range of stock in store. This means that beyond your basic teabags, paper and pint of milk you won't find anything too exciting. However, it certainly does the job and sometimes it's nice to have a little morning walk for these bits and bobs. You know, fresh air and spring sunshine and all that. The prices for the above basic supplies though are decent and the staff are very pleasant. These small aspects of the shop really add to it and make it worth going slightly out of your way for. Last of all, and one of the most attractive elements, is the character rolled into this place. It looks a little run down but it still has a cheery vibe to it. And, cheery really is the word for it. Despite its size, it is well stocked, with food, sweets and milk- even if a simple request does send the owner scuttling off into his stock room. Although I don't use the shop daily, he seems to recognise me and remember both my milk and paper order. He has a few strange items on the shelves, the sort of thing that a larger shop would stock, perhaps, but there is no denying that this is a friendly, if cramped local newsagent. It isn't really that convenient for anywhere, except the local laundrette: that might account for the roaring trade he appears to do in magazines, especially puzzle ones. In an emergency, it doubles as a stationers, although it is best to avoid those times that the primacy kids turn up for their penny mixes.

I did also live pretty much above it for the best part of a year. Hence, I've been in here quite a few times and in an array of states.... No matter what state I wandered in here the staff were always very nice, friendly and chatty. The stock isn't great but considering you've got bigger stores - such as Barry's and A & S Food Stores - just minutes away, it doesn't matter greatly. The stock that they do have is just enough - fresh Morton's rolls, bog roll, newspapers and the usual soft drinks and sweets. The prices are slightly higher than the average supermarket but completely in line with other newsagents and fine for a few emergency bits and bobs. There's also a selection of local adverts in the window that are always worth a browse.

It kind of reminds me of a garden shed that someone has added some shelves to, added a till and stuck a sign on the door and as if by magic it's turned into a shop. It seems that they only stock the essentials but they also have odd items such as tinned gherkins, which made me chuckle when I saw them hiding on a shelf. As Laura has already mentioned, with Barry's and larger convenience stores nearby there's not as much selection here, but if you're just looking for a newspaper or a packet of crisps then you're sorted.
