Rafael is a nice guy, so I almost feel a bit guilty leaving him a negative review, but will leave him those extra stars because I think he would've done a decent job if circumstances were different.
Short version: His team didn't really remove everything they were supposed to, and once I paid him, it took Rafael another 2 months to come back to do 20% of the remaining items. I had to contact him almost every week to see when he was going to come back -- I've now given up on the remaining 80% because it's too draining to have to keep contacting him.
Back in March, I hired him to remove all plants, grass, concrete, trees, rocks, etc. to get the site prepped for new landscape design. At that time, I had not decided on the landscape installers but wanted to hire a crew to remove everything so I had a better visual of what I had to work with. He seemed competent, friendly, and thoughtful about the work. I think one of the key issues with his delivery/execution is his team (who are apparently his friends) - whenever Rafael wasn't around (which was about 99% of the time), they would sit around on their phone. There was one guy in the team that was good -- he worked on tree & concrete removal and he was clearly a hard working guy. The rest -- not so. In fact, on one of the days, the entire day was spent removing 3/4 of the 110 sq. feet grass that I had in the front yard (which by the way grew back). I felt bad and wanted to tell Rafael that he was essentially paying his guys to take 4 hour breaks a day. My husband told him at some point and his response was "I know" -- apparently other customers have shown Rafael videos of his people just sitting around)
Anyway, to be honest, it didn't really bother me that they were slow because it was going to be awhile before I installed the new landscape design anyway. What is driving me to leave this review is that in the end the crew (hence Rafael Landscaping) didn't do what they said they were going to do. Even though Rafael is a nice guy, I do think that it was his responsibility to come back promptly to fix things but he really did not. He said he was very busy, which I get, but I'm pretty sure he would've came back right away had I not paid him yet. So here I am in May, and the crew that I hire to do the landscape installation will now need to finish prepping the site, meaning I will have to pay someone else to do it.
Lesson here is, if you do end up hiring Rafael -- do not pay him in full UNTIL you are 100% satisfied. And don't believe it when Rafael says he would come back to finish everything -- it's been 2 months and it's still not done. Once that check is cashed, he has no incentive to come back to finish things. One of these days, I will learn my lesson! read more
