It seems to me I got an inexperienced barber, just judging by her actions. I specifically asked if she knew how to do a skin fade, she said yes. She was very polite, gentle, and took her time without rushing. But my haircut to put it nicely is nothing what I wanted. I specially stated medium skin fade, and when she re-assured me medium, I stated low to medium skin fade. She gave me the exact opposite and gave me the highest of the highest skin fade. She blended the fade well but literally already started on a bad note when she cut the top of the fade thin, leaving her no room to work with now. It already happened, I couldn't do nothing about it so I let her proceed. Now for the top, I specially stated little, and when she re-assured me little, I said very little since what I stated before didn't work out with my fade. She started to cut the sides of my head more towards the center and proceeded to cut the top more and more. Pretty much to the point now that I have really short hair on top when I went in with a decent amount. Overall, I would not go back to her for a haircut. I'm sure she would do well with other types of haircuts, but there is no way I would go back to her for a fade. My haircuit was $16, and I gave her a $20 and left. read more

This was my first visit to this barber shop, and I was really impressed on a number of fronts. First of all, the service was great -- warm greetings from everyone in the shop, and apologizing for the wait (which was really only about 15 minutes). The cut was great as well - Sergei (I'm probably spelling that incorrectly) did my hair and spent quite a lot of time cutting, shaving and going over his work. I can tell that he's a perfectionist about the cuts he gives, and I really appreciated it. He used a number of different razors to give me a really sharp look. I live in CT and was travelling to see friends in Brookville. My son realized he needed a hair cut desparately. I asked him to check for a barber shop in Plainview as it was on the way to our destination. He looked up reviews on Yelp for Rafael and we called. The person answering the phone told us to come on over as we were walk ins. Joe spent a good half hour on my son's hair cut and did a great job. The whole staff was courteous and attentive. The place was spotless. I have a lot of friends on Long Island and I would definitely spread good word for this barber shop. read more

Came in with my almost 2-year old who most decidedly did NOT want a haircut. The barber was so patient and gentle. I was hoping for a quick trim, but since my son was really resisting, he opted to use the electric trimmer instead so he didn't accidentally cut or hurt my son. 31 years old and Danny is only my second regular barber. Making the drive out to Queens to my old barber was getting to be too much so I'm glad I found this place. Just moved out to Hauppauge a few weeks ago - hardest part about moving was finding a place to get a haircut. Gave them a call, Donnie told me to come on in, and half an hour later walked out with an awesome haircut and experience. I'll just start this review off by saying go get a cut at Rafael's. Call ahead if you want, ask for Donnie, and you will walk out with a perfect haircut. As I walked into the shop for the first time, I was immediately greeted by Donnie, with a big smile and very friendly greeting. When it was my turn to sit in the chair, since it was my first time getting a cut at Rafael's, I took the time to explain what I wanted done. So, for the first few minutes, I simply talked to Donnie about what would look best with the style I was going for. He paid very close attention to what I was saying, and offered a few ideas of his own. The cut was precise, simple and very detail oriented; exactly how a true haircut from a good barber should be. And the best part of all: Donnie made sure to run everything by me first and explain what he was doing, so I didn't feel lost in the process. If he saw something that could work better than something we agreed on in the beginning, he paused and discussed the idea with me. The cut was finished off with a perfect straight razor neck and side burn shave, and a hot towel. After looking for a good barber shop on Long Island, I am glad I made the decision to come to Rafael's. read more

Just left Rafael's barbershop. Decided to bring my son here for a haircut. Upon entering the two barbers one in the way back with the shaved head and the one in either the 5th or 6th chair were not welcoming or friendly. They seemed annoyed that I brought my child in with outgrown ethnic hair looking for a haircut (like that's a crime for a 9 year old to try to grow hair out). When I asked for Sergio or Donnie they said they weren't there but wait for Aron to come back so we did. That was no boggy he was there within a few minutes. Aron was very honest when I asked him for a faux hawk fade that he didn't know how to do it and didn't want to mess it up. I'm totally ok with that and super thankful that he was sincere and honest. I'm going to be very honest that I was a little taken back and confused when they did say they didn't know how to do that haircut since I saw both on google and Yelp pictures of very nice and skilled haircuts that resembled what I was asking for and I even brought pictures of what we wanted. This place was recommended to me and the hairstyle I saw was not much different then what I was asking for my son. Then the two barbers in the back were extremely rude and talking down to me by saying that he(meaning Aron) said he can't do it doesn't me that the other 2 barbers who are rude as ever can't and then wanted me to show them pictures on what my son wanted done. No way are you going to touch my child's head when you can't even speak to a customer let alone a woman with professional courtesy. Last time I checked the barber shop is a place of business and I was willing to pay the cost plus tip generously for a nice haircut for my child. Aron saw what was going on and intervened by telling me to comeback tomorrow and have Lenny cut my child's hair since he's Dominican and specializes in curly hair. Aron came from an innocent place I understand, but that is just racist and offensive. Our go to barber shop is super busy but amazing has Barber's who are Russian and are amazing at cutting ethnic hair so why even bother to use a person's race to justify why someone can perform a hairstyle or not. It's always totally based on talent and that's it. Part of the reason I've come to love taking my child to barber shops is because of the friendliness and extra care that the barbers give to him just as I get that same type of experience going to my beauty salon. Please Donnie you were not here and maybe that's why some of your employees are so darn rude. I'm pretty sure they wouldn't behave that way if you were around since it's basically taking money out of your pocket and not a good reputation for you store. Please have a talk with those two employees and teach them the importance of kindness. Off to our usual barber worth the hour wait. read more
