Hand down one of my favorite Thai food to indulge. Food is authentic and one of my favorite things is that they use authentic super spicy Thai chilis, I advise starting very low on a scale 1-5 if you don't have a high spice tolerance. We arrived around 12:30 on a Saturday and were lucky enough to be seated right away. Unfortunately, we ended up with the two seats by the door, so every time the door opened, brrrrrrrr! Please note that there are only about a dozen seats, which are stools at the bar. This was not at all an issue for us, but I imagine it might be for some. The food was a bit of a roller coaster ride. The chicken satay was as dry as the Mojave Desert, the sauce was too sweet, and the portion size was too small. I ordered the jungle curry with chicken. Having seen the warning about their super spicy chiles, I asked for medium. Three hours later, my stomach is still burning. I enjoy spicy food, but that was a bit too much. There was also very little chicken in my dish, and it was rather bland. The vegetables and brown rice were the stars. My boyfriend ordered the Panang curry with beef. He ordered a "3" and his was milder than mine. The beef was better than the chicken in my dish. Overall, the Panang was better than the jungle curry. The Thai iced tea and Thai iced coffee were excellent but far too heavy on the ice. Service was timely and friendly. This place is the definition of a hole-in-the-wall. No tables, only a counter with 7 seats so a lot of customers do take-out. The had more workers (8) than customers (7). Ordered our favorites pad see ew and yellow curry. Food was ready in 15 minutes and we headed to the nearby park by the river to eat. Pad see ew was excellent. Did some work in Thailand. This place is absolutely authentic and the food is great! It's fun to watch the cooks blasting out amazing dishes with their ingredient preppers delivering the appropriate mix of veggies etc to them. I love downtown Mount Vernon, there are some great restaurants, and it's not difficult to find parking either. I am always hearing about how wonderful Rachawadee Thai Cafe is, even from people up in Bellingham. I was passing through town and decided to get Pad Thai take out before I went home. First off, the spice level at Rachawadee is serious, so unless you like very spicy I suggest ordering a one. My Pad Thai with tofu was excellent, very flavorful, and yes...spicy. My only complaint was that for Pad Thai it was a fairly small portion compared to other Thai restaurants, in fact this was the smallest portion on Pad Thai I've ever from take out. I would go back to Rachawadee to enjoy this awesome restaurant again if I am in dowtown Mount Vernon. I would probably go elsewhere if I wanted take out, only due to the smaller portion. Terrific dinner once again! There is a mix of locals and tourists that come here for the food. Fast service and you can either have one of the few seats in the restaurant or go and sit outside by the water. We ended up only doing a level one which about a 3 in most other Thai restaurants. Half was the spice level above no spice, haha. That's the level of spice we ordered and we were glad that they had warned us in advance. And let me tell you, this kitchen does not kid around!! They had diner counter style seating which was filled when we first went in (us being a party of 2 filling it in) as we were nearing 7:30 pm. It seemed like there were a lot of takeout orders. Definitely a hole in the wall spot and cooked with plenty of heart (and heat). I really enjoyed my tofu phad ba mee. It's definitely amongst one of the best Thai restaurants I've been to! I also enjoyed watching them cook up the orders. Post-dinner we took a black rice pudding to go which was also delicious- reminded me of congee pudding in a nostalgic way. This is a very small restaurant with a single counter inside and some outside seating. It seems like there was more staff than customer when you're inside. Two people help build the ingredients needed for each dish then pass them over to the two cooks that are right there at the counter. I ordered the Tom Yum Noodle soup and they warned me they make things on the hot side. I like hot but I told them to use the bottom scale for my first meal. The soup came out right off the stove from the young lady who was cooking it. It was so temperature hot I had to stir it a little and wait for it to cool to the right temperature. This was a very good bowl of Tom Yum soup. Large shrimp, fish balls, mushrooms, lemon grass, with noodles. It was spicy but I could have gone up one notch more. Glad I didn't for the first time. The only seating is stools along the long counter old time diner style. If you're old like me and from the Bay Area you would compare it to the old Doggie Diner. The seating is like that. I had the chicken phad see ew. It was very good. They tell you right away their spice numbering is different. They say your number is double what it is at other places. My bestie and I stopped into Rachawadee for lunch after browsing the Tulip Festival street fair. Rachawadee is a pepper-heads dream. Heat is guaranteed. Flavors are on point. Indoors is teeny. Seating is bar/counter style. There are about seven stools. Rachawadee is not ideal for groups or children due to the cramped space. My bestie and I had fun sitting at the counter observing all the food being prepped, cooked and plated. The phone didn't stop ringing once during our visit. Phone to-go orders were handled in an organized manner. My bestie and I shared the Chicken Garlic Sauce for $11.95: chicken breast, broccoli, carrots and cabbage in a savory fiery garlic sauce. Served with a side of Jasmine rice. Our lunch was also served with a complimentary cup of Hot & Sour soup. The vegetables were crisp-tender. The chicken tender. Our whole meal was absolutely delicious. The only thing missing with our lunch was an ice-cold beer. Sadly, Rachawadee doesn't serve booze of any type. I realize that sounds crazy but I've been to Thailand and had gourmet Thai food in big cities and I honestly would rather have Rachawadee any day!!
