Massive lake! Heard a lot of good things about this lake finally get a chance to check it out…read more We were invited to the 4th cookout. Food was delicious- hot dogs, hamburgers, chicken, fresh fish. The lake reminds me of Lake Lanier just a lot larger . The "beach" area is nice - plenty of picnic tables, docks, pravillions , and parking. The only thing missing is "white sand" This lake is roughly 1.5 hrs from Atlanta. If you're looking for "beach" vibes , this is a good place. Tybee Island is 3hrs away and Lake Lanier 2hrs.

*****UPDATE***** I called the Corp office this morning and…read morespoke with Susan whom I was told was the administrator for Holiday Campground. She listened to what i told her about the incident, and then said she had already been told by the person at the Campground what happened. Basically she said that it was policy and there were no exceptions, and explained people can cheat the system. Seems it would be hard to beat the system when you produced the card. It seems that if the card was not produced within a courtesy period then you have a problem, but it is extremely plain CUSTOMER SERIVCE or just Plain Common sense is not in their policy. They obviously consider it is a privilege you pay for to stay at the camp and that you will be monitored to make sure you obey the rules, better brush up and take a test or face the consequences. Anyway it was obvious Susan had already made up her mind before I ever called and she was 100% behind her Camp Nazi. She also told me they contacted her and she directed them to call the Sheriff. Wow, I am still in disbelief of what happened, but upon reflection it is just another government office with people that have no risk of consequence for their actions. Customer Service and Common Sense with. These people is an Oxymoron anyway. So Campers Beware the people that run Holiday could care less about the campers. We have been staying at Holiday for several years. We love the lake and the views and it is close enough we can bring our boat along. My wife pulls the boat and I pull the trailer. This time my wife was about 30 minutes behind me dropping off our dogs. It all started at the gate. I was informed even though we had paid way in advance and I had my drivers license I had to have the Georgia State Parks card to show. Nowhere in the website does it mention it has to be presented at checkin. You use it when you make your reservation online which we did. The card is registered to me. It's not like we used another name. I showed her my License and explained my wife was just a few minutes behind me. Well that was not good enough, she wanted me to pull over and wait until my wife got there that's a little petty don't you think. Anyway I had been driving for a good while and needed to go to the bathroom. I pulled to the bathhouse and when I came out I called my wife she was like just a few minutes away. So I went to our lot and pulled in. I had not even got totally unhooked when my wife called and said the woman had called the Troup County Sheriff on us, now 2 patrol cars pull up with the woman in tow after my wife just showed them the card, but that was not good enough we were told we broke the rules. The man at the window closed it on my wife, what an ass. Keep in mind only 30 or 40 minutes have gone by. I was floored that they called the sheriff with 2 patrol cars, i must be a 63 year old hoodlum. Needless to say I was livid and gave her a piece of my mind. The officers you could tell thought it was BS. We spoke after the Campground Nazi left and they could not understand why it was such a big deal. We had friends that came down with thier camper that we had planned this trip with. My friend witnessed the whole thing and could not believe the absurdity of it. Needless to say my wife was extremely upset with the rudeness it's like they enjoy some kind of sick power trip. Needless to say this ruined our trip and we just left. Reading past reviews it seems the only issues people have is with staff. One last thing we have been camping for many years and campers are the best people ever. This is the only campground we have ever had issue with that caused us to be upset. In fact we had a run in with I believe this same woman on a trip a couple of years ago. Anyway I am going to be calling the office tomorrow to file a complaint.

This review is not for the entire park, but just for one trail. We parked in a lot across the road…read morefrom the Callaway General Store and Café. We asked them about parking (no fee) and were returning there for lunch later anyway. We then hiked up Rt 190 about 50 yards and found the trail crossing. We opted to do the one on the left - I think it was Bentley? The one on the right was the Pine Mountain trail. The trail was a nice hike through the woods but never more than 200 yards from a main road. We followed it to a junction and turned right so as to begin the loop back. Since it had taken longer than planned already, we hiked back along Route 190 instead of another trail. In total, it was about 2.1 miles and took us from 10:45 a.m. to 12:05 p.m.! The trail was hilly with a lot of rocks so the pace was slow. I enjoyed the hike, though.

FDR State Park near Warm Springs, Georgia…read more Very nice state park with lots of nearby attractions to visit including Calloway Gardens and FDR's Little Whitehouse. The small town of Warm Springs had several little shops that were nice to walk through, even found some unique Christmas gifts. The highlight of downtown Warm Springs was the Bullock House Restaurant for their country cooking lunch buffet, a great bargain at $12.50 for the good food they serve. The park has several campsite areas, I believe were numbered as Campgrounds 1 through 5. The check-in building in a large CCC flagstone structure with a nice camp shop, but don't miss the scenic overlook out behind the building. Most rv camp sites we rode by were very wooded with good shade and seemed to be level. Each area has its own bathhouse. The one in our area was clean and offered two family restroom/shower room combinations in addition to the standard women's' and men's sides. Campsites in Campground 1 with numbers starting in the 100's are on or near a small lake. They did have some paddle boats but I didn't see any being rented so they could have been discontinued for the Winter. We did see several people fishing from the lakeshore. A Georgia license is required for fishing and the camp shop had a "Bait for Sale" sign. The CCC built Liberty Bell flagstone pool was also drained and closed for the season. A handful of the sites in Campground 1 are directly in the lake and some of those have full hookups. We were lucky to be in one of those lakefront full hookup sites. The park has several hiking trails but bikes are not allowed on them. It is a short drive to Dowdell's Knob, an overlook that FDR used to enjoy visiting and picnicing at when he was in the area. The foliage was still colorful but past its peak when we visited in mid-November. We enjoyed our stay in one of the best campsites we have had in a state park this year.
