Selection and price - this Asian supermarket called Asian Supermarket has en edge on these two…read morepoints over competitors. If you're like me and can't live without a variety of Asian goodies like tea and crackers, your jaw is bound to drop at the sights as you walk in. Sure, the aisles are only wide enough for one person to walk through straight on, but that's a small concession for what's on offer here. Their produce section is surprisingly extensive, there's even a seafood section, and it looks like they've finally revamped the hot food next to the front entrance. The staff at checkout here are always quick and efficient, and I'm grateful they're such a decent Asian supermarket in the Capital District to complement the wonderful Kim's and Jang Tuh. They have their own parking lot and we have come close to not finding a parking space here, but there's a constant flow of people coming and going, so we've never actually not found parking.

The overall cleanliness of the store also raises some serious concern! It's really disappointing because a good Asian grocery store is hard to find in the area. I hope the management takes these issues seriously and improves their quality control and sanitation standards. Customers deserve better, especially when it comes to food safety.

I can always trust this place to have all of the freshest ingredients for my favorite Asian recipes…read moreand there's always something new and different there! Wednesdays are when they bring in all of their fresh produce and meats straight out of the loading truck, so call ahead if you want anything. They're more than happy to put them on hold for you before they sell out. It gets very packed though with all of their regular customers getting in on all the fresh food, so be prepared!

Utica needs a lot more of this. Places where you can buy fresh galangal and kaffir lime leaves are…read morefar more relevant than places where you can buy enormous food service Italian dinners. There's a large selection of fresh produce and a decent selection of animal parts, products, fluids, gels, and jellies. All sorts of esoteric products and a good range of Asian cuisine staples. And if you're tired of Hellmann's, you can always stock up on Kewpie mayonnaise (at least check out the weird label art!). Instead of spending all their waking energy figuring out how to pave over more of Utica's heritage, the city's leaders should be concentrating their energies on attracting more Nguyen Phats and Nguyen Phat customers. The chamber of commerce hypes Varick Street as if the city had reinvented bar culture. Yep, and Utica College reinvented higher education. I'd be much more interested in a solid southeast Asian restaurant row on Bleecker (man cannot survive on O'Scugnizzo's alone). And the City would be better off for it in the long run.
