My wife and I had a couple of side salads and a pie (pizza pie, that is), and it was pretty darned good. Salad was far larger than I had expected, so that was a bonus. Perhaps heavy on the cheese, but that didn't stop me from eating it, so maybe I'm just looking for a negative? Lettuce was fresh, tomatoes too (in March). Not busy when we went, but service was fine (they were wrangling with a new POS system, which is no fun - been there, done that a couple of times myself), atmosphere/etc., all good. Pie itself was hot, well made (not a super-thin crust for those who care, but more thin than not; we found it really good, and yes, we prefer thin crusted pizza), ample toppings, and worth a picture (that we didn't take because we'd rather eat our pie than take a picture of it; we must be old, eh?). RJ's have been a staple in Galax since I was a child. I was in on the Friday night before Christmas and it was packed. I was dining with my Aunt while I was in town and we didn't have to wait very long for a table. I order the steak stromboli and my Aunt ordered a sub. Her sub was brought out first but it had mayo on it and she sent it back. My stromboli came out and was perfect. Her sub returned just a few mins later and was on point then. I ate about half the stromboli and took the rest home for the next day. The decor is pretty basic, however it's clean and was remodeled several yrs ago after a fire. Hadn't eaten there in 30 years. Returned for 30 anniversary and was somewhat disappointed. I guess memories are not always as good as you remember. Went there while visiting my folks over in Fries. We went for lunch one afternoon and had a decent experience. We shared a few pizzas and some salads - nothing exceptional, but not bad either. For a small town, local pizza joint I've definitely been to much worse! The pizza was not too greasy (we got a large cheese and a large sausage) and the crust was decently thin (what can I say, I'm much more a fan of the NY style rather than the Chicago style). My biggest beef with the place was that they were blaring Fox News over the TV in there - I'm not taking away any stars for that as I know a lot of people watch it, but maybe a public business should consider not taking radical political stances of either side as they can easily alienate their guests. I maybe a little bias considering I have seriously been eating here since I was 5 or so...so for 20 years this place has been a favorite for my family...and the biggest reason is consistency! This is a tough call for me. One one hand the subs are great,especially the hot ceaser sub, but the pizza is only so so. It's not bad but it's not particularly great either. If we are in that area of town and crave pizza we'll stop, but there are comprable pizza places between where we live and RJ's so I wouldn't make a special trip out of it. Also the service is alway really slow. I understand that you can't rush quality, and if the place is really busy I understand, but even when it's slow it takes the staff awhile to get your drinks and take your order. What a place! When I first went in the place was packed. Being in a wheelchair I was nervous I wouldn't find a place to go, but immediately the customers started helping me find a place. I was getting a few looks by others and even a few points but the feeling from that went away fast. The staff was so polite that any negativity went right out the door. I give this place 5 stars because it is my favorite place to eat in Galax and my favorite place to eat subs period. I love the salads, garlic bread, and the stromboli. I am not a huge pizza fan so I have never ordered their pizza. The ranch dressing here is the best I have ever consumed. I find it to have a clean dining room and clean restrooms. The service is fine. I mostly go on Saturday night when they are quite busy and I have never found the service to be bad. Pizza is my favorite food and I have traveled around the world eating pizza all over the place but nothing makes me salivate like thinking about RJ's cheese breadsticks and Stromboli. I remember when RJ's opened back in the 80's-I grew up eating there. And now that I live in California whenever I come home I eat there at least twice trying to get my fill. LOVE LOVE LOVE their cheese breadsticks. A casual laid back place to eat (as are all the places in Galax), fun for all ages. I also like their mini sizes they offer at lunch so I don't have to share. And they always give you crackers to munch on. Their crushed ice and sweet tea are also fab. I don't like the TVs they have mounted though as I find them distracting from conversation with those I am there with, but otherwise a great place to go! NOTE: they are closed on Sundays. read more
