Mom hired R.(Randy) Hendrick Construction of Islamorada after hurricane Irma,
An engineer drew a plan and estimate for repairs $40k something. Mom agreed to a $66k contract. Hendrick repaired some places not drawn by the engineer and neglected some places that were drawn. He charged 20% markup on everything including two gauges of rebar of 20foot lengths about 2 dozen of each that were not used, but put back on the truck at the end of the project. There were no credits of anything. Also for tools that a contractor should have. Also for the portalet for the men. Everything 20% markup.
The contract called for the removal and replacement of items to facilitate work. A hanging staghorn fern was removed but was charged $300+ to replace to the same spot. The contract said 40 days; it took 5 months and there is still work undone. He went over budget $12k. The porch screen framework was removed in 1 piece but was damaged when lowered. Randy said he needed $5k for "metal work" and half of it immediately. After she gave it to him then she discovered it was to replace the porch frame. (If it needed to be replaced, he needed to tell her that before he removed it; not after he damaged it lowering it.) Also he should have told her what the "metal work" was.
A worker, not Randy, came with a brochure and told me, not Mom (I'm not on the contract), to pick a color. He didn't ask if we wanted the concrete painted or how much it would cost. All he said was "pick a color". I assumed that because all the fights we were having with Randy they were going to comp this. The contract specificallystates that there would be no painting. I gave it to Mom, she picked a color (it's her house, not mine). He charged us a large amount for paint, labor and of course 20%. I got a brush and covered up all the drips of paint they left.
The corner posts to the catwalk rails have not been replaced to this day. They either lost or damaged them. The concrete wall by the 2 story entrance is crumbling. They repaired the ceiling in the toolroom and concrete dripped down the outside wall. They left it that way. The kindly neighbor next door hired someone to paint over it.
When Randy started sending invoices for more than the $66800 in the contract; Mom stopped paying. Randy visited her and demanded payment for the $12k over budget. She refused. He said that he would take her house from her and slammed the door. He put a lien on the property. He sued Mom. read more
