I had a confirmed appointment for myself and my two sons with Ru Cortez (the owner) for 10:30am mind you I'm driving 40+ miles to Kent without warning or explanation I got my confirmed appointment canceled by him.I would not have had any communication with him if I didn't text him when I left my home that we were on our way from Olympia. He text back an hour later saying sorry I gotta cancel. I usually don't write reviews, but the fact that he took two hours out of my day is unacceptable. I get it people are busy, but if you're running a business you should be more professional and take the time to reach out just like barbers would like their clients to give them ample time to maneuver around client cancellations. Traveling for work, I sometimes wait to get a haircut until I am in a business city. One thing I have found, is most black or major cities charge about $15 for a fade. At $25, I think R Barber is a little too ambitious, especially for the zip code. In Kent, the population of single mothers and families on government assistance is probably the highest in the county, but for some reason these guys are confident their pricing is fair and reasonable. Someone told me to never hate someone for their hustle, but I think when you overcharge for services, you are setting yourself up for failure. I don't care how good a haircut is, it's only worth so much money, and unless your appointments are 100% on time and every cut you give is clean, you are opening yourself up to criticism. I think you will get a solid hair cut here, but I also think you could get the same cut elsewhere for about $7 less. read more

I've waited a whole month to do this review solely just to see how long it took for my son's hair to grow back. Believe it or not, it's still short! Money well spent there! HOWEVER!!!!!!!! Our experience was very uncomfortable!!!! This was our first time too!!! I had made an appointment via yelp for my son. When we entered, they greeted us and Ruben (the owner) asked if we had an appointment or are we walk ins? I said we had an appointment at 11:45. He looked confused and had asked the other barbers if they had an 11:45 booking. Of course, they all said no. He asked me who did I made an appointment with and I said through yelp. He proceeded to check and couldn't find my booking. So I showed him my appointment through yelp. He was still confused and shocked to see my phone having a booking and his phone had none. As we go back and forth, another barber behind me said....YES! SHE DOES!!! SHE'S ON HERE FOR 11:45!!!! This is where things went left..real quick! Apparently, if you book through yelp, you are actually booking with another 3rd party! That 3rd party was being handle by that barber and not through the shop owner. They go at it about that ALL THE WHILE MY SON, DAUGHTER, AND I were sitting right in the middle of it!!! He proceeded to cut my son's hair. Got on the phone and started calling someone who knew about that situation and how it needed to be fixed. Now, I understand mistakes happen, but all of that bickering should've been handled AFTER! It's basic customer service 101! If they would have left it alone, apologized, and proceeded to give the best cut like all the other reviewers had rated them, WE WOULD'VE BEEN HAPPY! It was the bickering that killed the vibe. Making us feel uncomfortable. More importantly, my 5 year old was scared. Ruben was on the phone talking to someone 90% of the time, that I had to keep asking my son IF EVERYTHING WAS OKAY? (Like I was the barber) ‍ I still gave him a tip, it was a good haircut....Just a bad experience getting it!!! read more

Not a place for kids. My 2 year old needed a haircut and so we looked up places in the area. We were greeted very politely and told that we were right after the person he was working on. We waited an hour and then he said that there was a guy before us so we waited again. My kids were getting impatient but he wrapped it up and started on my son. We told him what we wanted and he actually cut off more than we would have liked. My son was crying half of the time and he didnt even try to hurry up the cutting of the hair. We had to cut the session short because he was taking too long for my son his crying made him red. But the barber had no regard for his crying. He needs to know how to work fast when it comes to small kids who dont like to sit still for a long time. Not going there again to take my son. read more

I've been a client of Ruben's for 7+ years now. From Tacoma to Lakewood to Kent now... I'll always go where he goes and I know if he goes out of town or is not available, any of the other guys in the shop will take care of me. Best cuts in WA and well priced for the services rendered. You can go around the block and get a $10-$12 haircut but then when you're unhappy with it, you would have wished you just went here to start.
