Purchased a bicycle through eBay from this shop. Bicycle was paid in full, with a local pickup option selected. When I called to confirm the pick up details of the bicycle, the shop said they were not willing to sell the bike for the price on eBay (which they set, and I paid in full) instead they wanted an additional $1000 more than I had already paid. So right now they have my money and the bike, which they will not turn over. eBay claim is pending. Dishonest seller. read more

One of the friendliest bike shops I've ever been to. They talked to me about my repair, they offered advice (but didn't push anything), they chatted with me about local bike events and other neat bike stuff while I was waiting. One of the mechanics even stopped what he was doing so he could fix my bike and get me rolling again. A friendly little shop dog roamed the store while I was there. Unless you have a total inability to service your own bicycle, or are pressed to purchase a needed part on the spot. I would avoid this shop. Service department is a mix bag of hipsters and toss offs, who are more that eager to make you feel like a total noob/ idiot for asking even the most well thought out question in regards to issues you have. Prices are through the roof, I'm assuming the bulk of there clients drop off there repairs and there gold cards and let em have at it. Everything they sell can be acquired much cheaper online most times w/ free shipping. Last time I was in there I had some little tosser hipster with short, shorts worked hallway into his ass crack trying to sell me a fixed gear when I went in to get a set of tires? We shopped around at both the smaller local shops and big stores. Ultimately, Todd was the most knowledgeable and really wanted to make sure we knew all the different aspects of the bikes and took the time to listen our needs. Ok. They did not get it right the first time but 3 other shops did not either. What was important to me was that they stood by their work, they kept at it and figured it out and solved the problem. Plus I was not from Springfield, not likely to be a repeat customer, yet they still treated me well, did things beyond the scope of the repair and kept something I wanted to purchase for 2 months until I returned from my 10,000 mile motorcycle/bicycle tour and then shipped it to me. And to the naysayer, hell, everything is cheaper on-line, duh. There's no storefront. There's no trained personnel, there's no tools to fix things and if you already know everything, why ask a question or if getting an answer offends your sensibilities, again, don't ask. First started going to R & M Cyclery in 1975 after I moved to Springfield. Quality of work has been invariably first rate and the staff and owners knowledgeable, friendly and helpful. The are willing to go above and beyond to help you get on the road on the RIGHT bike for you. I purchased 8 bikes at R&M over the years and all were recommended after discussions of rider needs. I've taken friends there as well for their bikes and staff and merchandise was extremely helpful. The shop helped me with purchases of bikes, dealing with two insurance claims after thefts and accidents. They went to a bike manufacturer's facility in Wisconsin with me when I was looking to upgrade my cycling and they've been there to encourage me and others to ride a bike. Their motto says it--R&M sells cycling not just bicycles. This shop is the ideal bike shop I look for now that I'm living out of the area. . I used to go here and loved everything about the place. It's under new management, by all appearances. The service is way, way overpriced and under value. For example, I went in for a simple tune up and 109.00 dollars later I got it back! 2 hours later on a ride, 4 spokes broke. I wobbled 10 miles back home, took it back to R&M and was told they would fix it. They charged me 25 dollars this time. They took no responsibility for this occurrence though it has never happened before. The lady in line before me was given new spokes gratis. Guess I wasn't his type. I'm through with this place. Two times is proof enough that the new ownership is not up to par. Side note, a couple of these guys look more motorcyclists than cyclists. read more

I bought my Cannondale road bike here in Feb. 2016, but since I live 40 miles away, during the summer I took my bike to a more local shop for tuning/maintenance (2x!) -- what a disappointment! The local shop slightly improved my derailleur shifting, but it was far from "tuned". To start 2017, I took my Cannondale back to R & M for pre-season maintenance and tuning and my bike shifts LIKE NEW again. Their service work is excellent. Highly recommended. read more

There is a little jewel of a bike shop located in the heart of Springfield, Illinois. Not a place known for it's bicycle friendliness, but hey, we're getting better. Rm Cyclery has been my one and only shop for the past 10 years. Nowhere will you find a more knowledgeable staff in the central Illinois area than Todd, Adam and the rest of the guys. Need a Trek? Got it. Need a Cannondale? Got it. Need a used 1983 Waterford? Got it. They have all the things you need, at reasonable prices. It's not a big box store, just shaped like one. I have never once walked in there and not felt at "home". That says more than "I'll save a couple bucks". Even if you want to haggle car dealer style, I'm sure they'd do that. But as far as value, service and a sense of real, down home Midwest friendliness, don't go anywhere else. I even stop in there for my soda pop. Keep it up, guys. read more
