Loved this place. I used to go to places like this on LA, like over 12 years ago. I felt sooo in my element. Theres a main room and two smaller rooms downstairs. Each room has a bar which is nice. There was a cover fee but the drinks weren't crazy expensive so i thought it was fine. One room had mixed 80s , another had industrial goth type music, main room had mix of 80s 90s alternative. Loved it. Everyone just in the zone and dancing. Fonally found something closevto home.

I've been a regular at this place since 1998. We all love our club. This isn't one of those places where you aren't required to dress up to go. This is a neighborhood staple where you can show up in your clothes from work if you wanna get trashed while being serenaded by The Cure or Hocico. If you want to wear your platform boots, dye your hair black or grab some army camos you're more than welcome to drop in of course. I just want to stress there is no pressure either way. Friday nights are "tamer"(Emo hipster crap ) than Saturdays (EBM/Industrial). The drinks are cheap, but they do raise prices from time to time to try to keep up with the rest of the clubs. Crowded and if you are good at avoidiong the unnecessary drama at a Goth/Industrial club you should do fine here. They built a stupid hockey arena a couple of blocks away so come early for parking free on the street charge for a couple of the arena lots. BTW, the PATH train RUNS ALL NIGHT so please ignore that reviewer. The area isn't bad considering its in Newark. I've drunkenly stumbled around all night many blocks away and have received no problem and I'm an attractive girl (I'd like to think). In short you want a place to go where you don't want to hear spanish music or hip hop or country. This is your place.

The place is gothic ,but friendly.Nice bartender and a comfortable piece to hangout. If you are a young person, you may fit in this establishment.

The bathrooms are spacious and clean, and I can't emphasize enough how important that is. My suggestion, particularly for sold-out shows, is to arrive early, like an hour and a half before doors, and park your car at the VFW across the street and pop in for a few three-dollar beers. The prices at Starland are considerably more ($8.50 for a 12 oz can) and the VFW is a great pre-game option. The sound in Starland is good, and their layout is one of their biggest strengths; pretty much anywhere you stand you'll have a good view of the stage. It never seems far away. I'm taking off one star, however, because the show I was at (Testament / Overkill / Destruction) was clearly over-sold. I moved around, checked out a few vantage points during the headliner and eventually found a spot with some breathing room, in a raised area by one of the bars. But man, just imagining some kind of emergency situation and the absolute chaos that would ensue with such a packed-in, oversold crowd, it makes a person nervous.

It's located on the side of the Prudential Center, but it was a little confusing walking around to find the entrance. There are some museum-general things, different versions of the award, some images of different winners, and some interactive things where you can put on headphones and pretend to play instruments or watch videos of different winners. The main part was completely empty when I went. The "special exhibit" is where a few other people were. At my visit it was about Taylor Swift, so it featured a lot of her costumed and signed memorabilia and some clips of her home videos as a kid and a big wall graphic of her magazine covers. It was nifty, but an exhibit would be more interesting due to longevity of career. She's still establishing. There was a room with a video playing and a list of all her albums/songs. One woman was sitting watching that video the entire time I read the exhibit information, so it was really entrancing to some. I was probably here about 30-45 minutes, because it is small. If the temp exhibit is an artist you like and you're already in the area, it can be a neat exhibit. I would have been disappointed paying for parking if this was all I was going to see.

The Secret Behind the Magic of The Stone Pony is Community…read more There is something about The Stone Pony that goes beyond music. What made the venue legendary was never the walls, the bar, or even the stage lights. It was the community. In the 1970s and 1980s, Asbury Park became a kind of laboratory for musicians. Night after night, artists gathered in clubs along the Jersey Shore to play, experiment, collaborate, and refine their craft in front of real audiences. The Stone Pony became one of the central meeting points for this growing creative ecosystem. Musicians sat in with each other's bands, traded ideas, tested new songs, and sometimes performed several nights a week. Instead of guarding their talent, they shared it. Instead of competing, they elevated one another. Out of that environment emerged artists who would later become internationally known, including Bruce Springsteen, Southside Johnny, and Steven Van Zandt. They were shaped by thousands of hours playing together in small rooms filled with passionate listeners. The sound that developed in Asbury Park reflected this collaboration. It blended rock, soul, rhythm and blues, and big-band horn arrangements into what many came to call the Jersey Shore sound. Part of what made this ecosystem so special was the geography. Within just a few walkable blocks were other gathering places where musicians and fans flowed throughout the night, including Asbury Lanes, Tim McLoone's Supper Club, and the legendary Wonder Bar, all just steps from the Atlantic Ocean and the Asbury Park boardwalk. Music, ocean air, and a close-knit creative community blended together in a vibrant hub where musicians could play one venue and then wander down the block to hear another band. My curiosity about this history grew from a personal place. Over the past year my son, Chris Renner, a young guitar player who has only been playing for two years, has had the opportunity to perform rock cover songs on stages throughout Asbury Park. Chris's playing has reminded many listeners of the legendary precision and melodic passion of Randy Rhoads. His style focuses on melodic solos and phrasing influenced by classical music rather than typical head-banging metal. Because of the NJ music community, Chris has already had the opportunity to perform as lead guitarist on stages including The Stone Pony, Asbury Lanes, Tim McLoone's, Wonder Bar, and even the Ozzy Osbourne Tribute Show at the Cutting Room in Manhattan. Watching him step onto those stages sparked a deeper interest in the story behind the NJ music scene and the culture that continues to nurture musicians today. One of the most interesting aspects of the Asbury Park scene is how cover music and original music live side by side. Many bands begin by performing well-known songs while gradually introducing their own material. The cover band scene plays an important role. It allows musicians to build stage experience, connect with audiences, and become part of the local circuit. Those shared songs create a common language between bands and fans and foster a welcoming camaraderie. Something even more inspiring has been happening recently. Several of Chris's friends from the local music community have begun forming their own original bands and performing their own songs. Chris loves supporting them, showing up to their shows and cheering them on as they cheer him. This is how music scenes grow. Musicians celebrate the music that inspired them, refine their skills through live performance, collaborate with other players, and eventually discover their own voice. Even today the Stone Pony carries that legacy. Musicians still show up, plug in, and play. Fans still crowd close to the stage the way they did decades ago. Great cultural movements rarely begin in boardrooms or corporate offices. They begin in communities, in small venues, shared stages, and the willingness of people to create together. The Stone Pony and the Asbury Park music community are proof that when talent, opportunity, and collaboration come together in one place, something extraordinary can happen. If it's a sold out / crowded show I can definitely see how this is overwhelming for a small child. If you have a child under 5 I'd say to avoid, especially since they can't really see the stage unless you pick them up. Another huge disappointment was that Taylor Swift was not dressed up. When we saw this show at Starland Ballroom Taylor was in costume. At White Eagle the singer was just wearing a black Rock and Roll Playhouse tee shirt. I think they could've had a lot more fun with this and the kids would've been excited. For a sold out show they also could have also kept both sides of the bars open. Lines were crazy long. And for the kids drink on special they should probably consider offering a lid with the cup. It felt like miss after miss for a 'kid friendly' event, so we probably wouldn't head back here for a Rock and Roll Playhouse, or at least I'd wait until my kids were older.

A mixture of either old, sketchy, no sex appeal and rough around the edges. The dance floor was packed and the music was on point. There was some people that set up food in the back but it left a trail of an odor that was not appetizing. Drinks were ok at best but when I asked for a cup with ice it seemed to be an issue. Very off putting. Not quite sure what the issue was.... The bartender brought the manager over and I had to specify I wanted it for my beer. Yes, I'm a weirdo if I don't get a frosted glass, I'll take a cup with ice. The manager proceeds to ask me ; "So you want me to pour the beer into the cup with ice?" UMMM yes I don't mind pouring it my damn self but if it makes you more comfortable, knock yourself out. It truly didn't make a difference to me who poured it, I just wanted some damn ice to cool myself off! I'm not sure what type of sketchy and shady people they deal with but I am not the one. My boyfriend and I run a good tab on drinks, give me what I'm asking for and paying for! Meanwhile, I did not see just about any of the 30-40 people on the dance floor buy a drink. I then saw hookah's on a table and the price list. Unfortunately, they were not providing hookah service that night. So why have them out? Whewwww I love my house music community and love the Lincoln Park festival that is close to the bar but this past Sunday this bar and crowd missed the mark. The only redeeming factor was the DJ. I highly doubt I'd return unless it were to vibe out and dance to a DJ I reaaaaallly love.
