If you are a nw-sider and fan of fade shops, you may have heard of George's fade salon of west…read moreRogers Park. A long time barber of theirs has setup residency here. When I found him I was thrilled and quickly made the switch. There was a detail of the shop that I found to be a big plus because it would only help the barbers. Ie The large amount of natural light that streams inside and the available lighting above. This helps the barber to see the fine hairs on your head and face when trying to line up or offer a proper fade. The past year went along fine and I'd end up shooting selfies soon after great cuts. But later year I noticed some differences in the services and now that prices have jumped I'm ready to discover something else. In looks and offerings, this is a bare bones barber shop. Although with carrying the title of salon, I haven't seen any services performed that lends to that idea. The look of their shop is as if it's still in a transition. There's some of the hardware but not every detail that lends to a full service salon experience. Honestly, I would never bring a woman here. They don't offer paper towels or napkins in the restroom.. So they expect customers to use their Dollar store tp? #Ghastly. I mention this factoid because it lends to an overall conclusion about the maintenance. There are miscl. services, customer service, amenities, cleanliness, attention to details; that are expected in a business that offers a form of hospitality. These guys lack in many of those departments. For example, the other day I heard an older patron inquire whether their barber tools are cleaned between customers... The barber insisted yes, he uses clean tools with everyone. Though I haven't witnessed as such. The areas around the chairs get swept every so often. There are details that could see a higher level of care. Also.. they pay more attention to their phones and futbol than their customers. This is my greatest point of contention. If one of the two loses focus, one or both will be glued to the television. When they return to cutting, mistakes occur. Their attention is easily lost on everything. It's understood that a barber needs to be in contact with customers. Both walkins and those connecting via text, call, social media. But damn.. pay some attention to what you're doing. If this were a $5 - $8 haircut, there's not much to complain about. But it is not. A year ago, haircuts were $10 and beard work an additional $10. So, one could get a taper fade or fade with tight line with beard work for $20 dollars. This is my usual order. A tight fade line up, means the lining will look significant / stand-out. Around Chicagoland, at "bare bones" barber shops the average for this combo is $18 - $22. Whereas going to a traditional salon or upscale hair cuttery would cost $40 dollars plus. (It should be noted, there is a huge difference in every level of comfort that is included in that $40 price tag.) - As of mid March MJ's had a drastic increase in hair cut pricing to $15 dollars. Honestly, I think they are f*cking nuts to charge as much. But, that seems to be the trend with Chicago bare bones barbers. (Some people blame politics for the price increase. Word of mouth and recent elections, claimed a new alderman would look into adding a haircut tax. This guy was not voted in, yet, the prices have risen) I think they were trying to stay competitive. Other busier shops, had increased gradually. This is a price shock, it will be interesting to see how many "usuals" will stick by them. There are quite a number of services offered. I guess because their pricing has increased they removed all the old pricing signs. They are still doing services like eyebrows, waxing, coloring and more. A previous reviewer was ecstatic about their ability with executing "graphics." This is when the barber cuts an image, lines, features or letters, etc into the faded regions of your hair. Strangely, this review has been dropped into the "other reviews" section. Very odd. Given that it seems to be a real experience backed up with photos.. Although I mention a lack of attention to details above, if you feel that something is off, you should bring it to their attention. They will undoubtedly try to fix it.
