Royal Inn - Good choice: Venison

Royal Inn

Great Food - lovely hosts / owners…read more We stayed two nice at the owners rental cottage, which was absolutely fantastic! Got everything you need and more. Beautiful location and countryside views....just about 3mins away by foot. And this fantastic pub/restaurant is owned by the same lovely couple, Catherine and Paul. There is a - more formal - restaurant section and the bar/pub section, where dogs are very welcome. And that's where we dined for two nights. It's a cosy, classic and local pub, full of atmosphere and character. Hosts and guests are very friendly and good for a chat. We - coming from Switzerland - didn't feel like outsiders at all. A very warm and welcoming place. Here's a short list of the food we chose these two nights. There is a regular menu, available every day and then a daily special board: Crabcakes: nice size, good flavours Royal Burger w/ chips: superb! Good meat, crispy onion rings and a great salsa Orange Duck Paté: smooth and full of flavours, nice twist with the orange Venison with sides: tender pieces of venison, rich and creamy gravy Scallops: not overly exciting, but ok Eaton Mess (not a typo): really good, nice berries Cheese Plate: good cuts of nice tasting local cheese Banoffee Pie: sweet, rich....a good thing! Rhubarb Crumble: nice balance between sweet (they put some apples) and sour, a lovely combination I can't praise this place enough. It's exactly the kind of local pub you might be looking for. Lovely owners and the cook really knows what he's doing. Reasonable prices too and good beer and wine! We were lucky, living just around the corner, because it gets very dark at night....and it's mostly one-lane roads here. Combine this scenario with a couple of pints.... but it's surely worth a visit.

Once a humble collection of three silver miners' cottages, it became a pub in 1857 and is now cosy and full of character, with a wood-burning stove, exposed stonework walls, beamed ceilings and flagstone flooring, our beer garden overlooks the river & the views are extraordinary! We're really passionate about using locally sourced ingredients; all our food is freshly home-cooked using seasonal local produce: our popular daily menus of fresh local produce comes with impeccable local credentials (locals speak of our seafood-based mains in hushed tones of reverence) & are served by our very friendly & most welcoming team of staff. We specialise in providing an excellent local pint: a good range of beers & specially selected real ales, all the ales and ciders are sourced from local brewers, alongside a happy mix of customers and warmly welcoming licensees. Renowned for our live music offering & the convivial chatter, the musicians & Bands in the area often perform an intimate gig of an evening. Check out our Facebook page for information on upcoming performances and Open Mic nights.
