If you're in the Overland Park area and craving Mediterranean, don't make the trek all the way out to Jerusalem Cafe or Baba's! Queen of Mediterranean does a solid job and they're my go-to for shawarma on a weekday night. My favorite dishes to order are the Beef Shawarma Plate (comes with hummus, vegetables, and spiced rice) and the Baba Ganoush. The shawarma is fully-flavored and tender and the portions are good. If you're unfamiliar with Baba Ganoush, it's similar to hummus but made with roasted garlic and eggplant rather than chickpeas. The end result is smoky, garlickly, slightly tangy spread that goes perfectly with their flatbread. I've also enjoyed the stuffed grape leaves, the chicken shawarma, the falafel, and the gyro--those are solid picks as well. Dishes I prefer to avoid here are the lamb options, the hummus, and the baklava. Even though I love lamb, I find that it tends to be on the tough side here and would much rather drive out north if I want that. The hummus is more acidic than I'm used to. While it's okay when paired with the shawarma, I wouldn't order it on its own. As for the baklava--proper baklava has a signficiant number of layers, with spiced nuts and honey spread between the layers. As a result, it's very labor-intensive to make can proper baklava can cost a pretty penny. The baklava here has the layered pastry on one side and the nut spread on the bottom, which is much easier to make but doesn't capture all the flavors and textures baklava should have. For the price, I wouldn't order it here. Overall, a great choice for a weeknight! The service can be hit or miss, so it's not dependable for groups, but even when I came with a group of ~20 the service time wasn't unreasonable. Atmosphere is fairly casual, so not a great choice for special occasions. read more

Don't judge a book by its cover, doesn't look like much on the outside, in a shopping strip. Inside was beautiful, colorful, and comfortable. Come up to the counter and got a couple of menus and told we could sit anywhere. Came up to our table and got our order. Asked about menu options and dish of the day and the staff was very helpful and gave us great details. I always have a hard time deciding on one dish because I love Mediterranean food so I opted for a combination appetizer plate as my meal. It did not disappoint, food was fresh, flavorful and delicious! My husband got a meal which had chicken, steak and lamb on a bed of rice (curry maybe?) with salad a generous portion of hummus. His dish was both pleasing to the eye and delicious! It did not disappoint. Had a large variety of drinks but we opted for Mexican Cokes. We left with a good deal of left overs and a half pound of assorted baklava. About average price for a nice dinner out for two. We were very pleased and we will return. read more

I ordered a Chicken Gyro Wrap w/Fries ($12) & a Greek Salad ($9) via DoorDash for Delivery. The salad was already mixed w/dressing, so it was soggy by the time it got to me, the feta was in very large chunks (see photo) and the lettuce was not great. I wish they had put the dressing on the side as is customary with to-go orders, so I assume it's pre-mixed. Overall, the salad was not enjoyable. The entree was soggy, but that was on the delivery/DoorDash, as it has obviously been warm when put into the container and then I recvd it 20-30min later (so = condensation). There was more Mint in their sauce than I've ever had, so it was more sweet and... Mint-forward, so not to my personal liking. NOTE: 1/3 of this isn't on the restaurant! We love this place for the comfortable atmosphere, quick service, and delicious food. My friends and I arrived about 7:15 on a Friday for a birthday dinner, a total group of 8 people. I love that you can mostly walk in and just grab a seat anywhere. I've seen a group of 20 casually walk in and find easy seating. Love the accessibility. There are also big family platters you can buy and share family-style. It feeds 4-5 people. We got the Big Mashawi Plate (family style) with different skewered meats on a bed of saffron rice. It came with hummus & pita which came out first. The saffron rice is SO good here. You can smell the saffron, taste the toasted almonds, and everything comes together in a savory-umami goodness. The meats were also solid, not dry at all. Hummus and pita are delicious. I was kind of on the fence with the baba ghanoush here. There's something different in it that I can't really put my finger on and I'm not sure I'd order it again. Stuffed grape leaves were soft, warm, and chewy in texture. The stuffing was really tasty but I felt it ate a little mushy. Kafta Kabob (family style) came on a bed of veggies and rice. It was flavored well but thought it was a little too dry. I came close to closing so I don't know if that has anything to do with it. Half Roasted Chicken meal was really good. The dark meat was the best, white was a little dry. We also had two orders of the lamb shank which I think is the best they have here, hands down. The lamb is soft, tender, and fall off the bone. It doesn't smell or taste gamey and is just really delicious. If you must order something, order the lamb shank! We had a ton of leftovers but ate everything within two days. I'm giving this a 4-star rating because I felt really really rushed toward the end. I mean, I get that they close at 8 pm but the guy at the front kept saying he had somewhere to be and I felt like our group had to inhale the food. We also ordered a pound of desserts and they forgot to give it to us but tacked it on our bill. Glad we caught it before we left! The food was delicious and filling for a very respectable price. The service was wonderful, the family that runs the restaurant was very kind. I am Mediterranean but I felt at home. My waitress was a little girl with lots of enthusiasm who made me feel invited by the family to enjoy my meal. I'm a bit annoyed that I haven't heard of this place sooner! I mean, the quality of my and my wife's meal was AMAZEBALLS! I got the chicken Shawarma sandwich with fries. It's actually a chicken shawarma burrito with fries, and it was very juicy. But HOLY COW was it amazing. They could learn to drain this better but please don't change the recipe. My wife got their Hummus, and it was THE best hummus I've ever had. My only complaint is that it needed 1-2 more pieces of bread. My wife also got their mango smoothie and wow was that tasty as well. We also tried one of their baklava, and that was ok...I know the only thing I wasn't super thrilled about...but it's still worth you giving it a try. It was fine, just a bit dry imho. The meal comes with a good variety of meats -lamb, chicken, beef and all different styles. The beef was a bit tough but the chicken was super juicy and everything was well flavored. The meat sat on a bed of rice and small amounts of veggies. I didn't order a veggie dish since it was supposed to come with some but it definitely was less than I expected. I really hate to ever give a bad review, but sadly I must here. I had been here before when it was under different ownership and loved it. I saw it had changed over and decided to check it out. My friend and I decided to just try the appetizer sampler to just give us an overview. We added meat to the order and got a kettle of tea. Our food came out before our tea which was a bit frustrating. The food was presented very well and looked really good, until the meat came out. It was pre-made pre-sliced gyro meat that I literally have in my freezer right now, oh and it was super dried out. They took it back, but in a short amount of time the server brought us out another type of "gyro"meat that looked really good and made in house. We were really impressed with that. Also we noticed we were missing the salad so we asked about it and our server explained they replaced the salad with dolmas. Well again a short time later she comes back and said the owner wanted us to have a salad. Again SUPER nice, but sadly here's where it goes downhill. Although the server was super nice, she was also very inattentive. We had to flag her down many times for things. The place was busy, but not too much for a well trained server. Now to the food.... The salad was probably the best thing and it wasn't even suppose to be included. The hummus was fine, but I could have used more olive oil and some garlic chili, but our server was too difficult to get ahold of. Also the pita I was given to eat the hummus with was at least two days old. There is no need for that when we have great places right here in KC that make pita EVERY day! Make and sell pita chips with the leftover pita, I'd buy some seasoned with Zatar! Ok back to the food, the dolmas were fair and the meat the kind owner gave us was good, but we left some on our plate. The baba was too smokey for me, but that's just a preference thing. Not that we could have enjoyed it anyway since the pita was so dang old! The tea was fine, but I was super frustrated we were halfway through our meal before we got it. I also got the rest of my tea to go and wanted to take the mint leaves with me. There were definitely not more than five leaves in that whole kettle. I told my friend after my first sip, there's not enough mint in here. Yep I was right about that! So as much as I wanted this place to be even better than the last place it is not. Over the last 2 years I have become a frequent flyer at their northland location. I was super hyped that they were opening a Johnson County location for a couple of reasons: a possible reduction in the northland line at their tiny location and also that they deserved all the success that they were receiving. I drove across town on a quarantine Saturday to do some carry-out on opening day. The menu is identical of the original shop and why wouldn't it be?, don't mess with perfection! The new location allows chef Kay to show off her art of dessert in 3 new show cases and a soon to be opening case of frozen treats for smoothies and shakes. A coffee grinder sits on the west wall representing the wonderful Turkish coffee drinks that await the patient. I did a carry-out of my favorite - hummus and grilled meat. What a flavor combo! I also took home an assorted sweets tray. They have a plethora of pillows to accompany bench seating and Jordanian art whenever dine -in seating resumes. read more

We absolutely love Queen of Mediterranean. The staff is so wonderful and really care about giving you the best experience possible. Our favorite entree is the Lamb Mix Shawarma Plate (which is a large portion--come hungry!). Their Falafel is also perfect--crispy on the outside, moist on the inside, never dry.
