After reading all of the reviews about the bad service and pretentious atmosphere, I was a little apprehensive to book a dinner party at Que Rico. But, upon a friend's rave review, I went ahead and took the chance. My experience was not phenomenal, but I was very satisfied. I came in with a party of 16, the servers were very attentive and friendly, the margaritas were flowing, and the food came out quickly. The guacamole was tasty, but a tad pricey for the amount you get. My food was great, and everyone else in the party seemed to enjoy their food as well. I was a little bit weirded out by the Frieda Kahlo shrine on the wall in the back room, but Hey, it's not my house, i don't get to pick out the decor! Maybe some of the other reviewers just came on the wrong night? I will definitely venture back to Que Rico for dinner again. read more

Just visited this past weekend for the first time. My fiance and I have been looking for a low key Mexican restaurant with some decent margaritas and I think we have found just the spot. The bomber margaritas are legit and the empanadas were delicious. Sad to write this review, because I live in the area and love supporting local businesses, but our last experience at Que Rico was god awful. We sat out on the patio, beautiful evening, but the service was one of the worst I have ever experienced. We had waited 30 minutes for a table (not a big deal, we didn't have reservations), but after we were seated, it took another 20 minutes for anyone to come to our table. We finally got a pitcher of margaritas 15 minutes after (which were very good), but the 1 appetizer we orders (nachos) literally looked like a 5 year old made them. It was chips with cheese, tomatoes, and a dollop of sour cream...most of the cheese wasn't even melted. We decided not to order entrees given the terrible service and horrible appetizer. What a DISASTER! The owner and the only waiter were so busy visiting with one particular table that they completely ignored the rest of the paying customers. We waited for menus. We waited to order drinks. We were never told about the specials. When the food finally came they got both of our orders wrong. I sent mine back and got a microwaved dinner instead of cooked to order. My husband didn't bother to send his dinner back and the table next to us was also served the wrong food. The owner and only waiter were so busy visiting with that one table that they totally ignored everyone else. When I said something the owner she was completely sarcastic. A large group of us went here last weekend and had a terrible experience. We called ahead for a table, the reservation was lost, so we waited two hours for a table. Fine, we get it. Waitress comes to take our order, after taking 2 of 9 orders she "runs out of paper" and says she will be right back....have to ask her several times to take our order. Wait an hour for food, two people get served when waitress realizes she's giving us the wrong table's food - they pick up food and give to correct table (health code violation). We are pretty sure she forgot to put in our order because she goes over everyone's order and it's another 40 minutes before we get food. No apologies from server or management. Great food, Margaritas, & atmosphere but beware if you're the only customers in there. We went on a weeknight & even though they say they're open until 11p.m., since we were the only table(it had been more crowded when we arrived at 8p.m), they turned on the lights & started cleaning when we hadn't even finished our drinks, and it was only 945p.m.! This may be a deal breaker for us ever going back. Good atmosphere, really good food and great margaritas! My wife and I go here all the time and have never had a bad experience. A good friend of mine thinks Que Rico has the strongest margaritas in the city. He claims he had two and blacked out....Can't say I experienced the same results but they are good. If you have kids they don't have a kids menu so you have to choose from the main menu, which can sometimes be difficult and you have to pay full price.... read more

I consider this place a hidden gem! By far the best margaritas in the city of Chicago. Why get a regular pitcher of margaritas when you can get margarita Bombers! They are pricey but for $2 more it is totally worth it. And don't let the name "Bomber" fool you. Those drinks will creep up on you if you don't pace yourself And as an added bonus the food is also very good. I recommend the Carne Delicioso or the fajitas. Terrible. We tried to go to 2 other Mexican restaurants on Friday night and they all had waits of 45 minutes or longer. However, Que Rico had no wait and now I know why; the food was not good. My wife and I both got steak fajitas, which by the way were $17 per order. The steak had NO flavor and the side of guacamole and sour cream were enough for about 1 chip worth. The waiter also only brought 3 tortillas, really does that make sense for 2 orders and 2 adults.... probably not. The margarita wasn't too bad though, so that's why they get at least 1 star. read more

I've been here several times and once for my birthday. I ordered margaritas and fajitas. Both were great. It's pretty cozy inside with a lot of fun decorations. This is a great neighborhood Mexican restaurant. The margaritas are delicious and pack quite a punch. The fajitas are great and the daily specials are always good. The atmosphere is very nicely done for a casual Mexican restaurant...they have great seasonal decorations. The service can be a bit slow so it's not the place to go if you are in a rush. It's also family friendly. We've taken parties that include infants and people in their 80's and everyone was happy. I was surprised by their overall rating....should be higher in my opinion. I cannot tell you enough about this awful restaurant. Food is completely bland, dining room is VERY loud, service was awful, management is rude. Just a few highlights: Made reservation, were seated 20 minutes late. Asked for no rice in burrito, were told "no, the kitchen is too busy." Server did not refill sodas despite being asked to do so three times. Food was flavorless, meat was tough and overcooked. Entrees were served incomplete and we had to ask for what was missing. Then we were given a bill with a 20 percent tip included.... For only 5 people. We complained. The manager told us that it was our fault- no apology, nothing. We had to argue to adjust the tip, still being told that we were wrong. Then they would not divide it on two credit cards (!!) There are so many other restaurants in this city - go somewhere else. If you want Mexican, this place is not worth a dime of your money or a moment of your time. read more

This is the perfect Mexican restaurant if you want to eat at a day care center. We have been there on several occasions, and toddlers were screaming in their high chairs and the kids were running around. If this suits your situation, it is the perfect spot, but we could not hear each other talk. The owner's son was apologetic, but the owner seemed to be more concerned about the bottom line as opposed the dining experience of the long time customers. I love Que Rico - not sure about all the reviews that are so-so! The food is way better than Cesars, so I don't mind forking over the few extra bucks it costs. The atmosphere is cool, kids don't bug me, and they are not there ALL the time. I have been here with 2 people and been here with 12 people and they accomodate both nicely. Second time didn't disappoint. I brought some friends to the place and it was a HUGE hit. Pork tacos (which went by a fancier, more accurate name that I don't remember), veggie fajitas and some other dishes were A+. It's such a neighborhood gem and I kick myself for not discovering it earlier. Now for the bad part.....this is totally out of the hands of the restaurant because I don't know what they can do, especially when patrons are clearly "regulars" and make a point of making that understood, but the kids. Ugh, the kids! I saw some other reviewers complain and can't help but wonder if it's the same family. 4 little kids all screaming from the moment the door opened until they left. As soon as the screams and loud chatter filled the dining room, every table gave each other "the look" (a/k/a "crap; so much for a nice night"). They were so poorly behaved the mom jumped over 1/2 the table to grab one of them and yell at her to stop whatever it was she was doing -- totally ineffective and extremely disruptive in and of itself. We (and the other tables) had to stop our conversations repeatedly when the chaos crescendoed because we couldn't hear ourselves think (aside from the fact is was really, really bizarre behavior). Mommy and daddy sucked down a pitcher or two of margaritas while the kids moved around the table screaming. Total crap move. Stay home if you and your kids can't behave in a public place. If I wanted a loud chaotic dining experience, I wouldn't be paying for dinner at a cozy neighborhood restaurant. Although I can't imagine being a restaurant trying to navigate such an awkward situation, I can only hope some day a parent of ill-behaved kids will recognize that it's rude and totally uncool to foist the little demons on the unsuspecting public just trying to go out for a nice meal and conversation. Essentially, someone else's poor parenting shouldn't be my problem. If you want a night out and your kids are awful in restaurants, get a sitter. We sit down and wait and wait and wait then our waiter which has a perfect job title as that's what he made us do WAIT finally comes to our table. He sets down a bowl of chips the size of a small salad bowl there were 4 of us dining that night and my first thought was that's hardly enough for me what are the other 3 gonna eat. They are tortilla chips not slices of truffle why be so stingy. Well maybe it was a good thing there was so few chips cause they were stale and paired with a bland salsa not good at all. If you cant get chips right at a Mexican restaurant you got issues. Next we order the guacamole and here we go again with the chip thing they have like 10 chips around the bowl of guacamole and by now our chip bowl we had originally received was empty. So I had to ask for more chips... crazy huh someone would want chips with their guacamole. Well we order dinner me and the wife split a carne asada it comes out guess what NO TORTILLA'S whats going on at this place are they the anti tortilla Mexican restaurant so when we finally get Wait the waiter over to our table again I ask for a few corn tortillas and guess what I wait and I wait and i wait and he brings the tortillas out but not until every one had finished their meals.. OK you get the deal I could go on but I will tell you I wont go back here to many good Mexican places to waste my time. I think they get people in because they have a somewhat cute atmosphere. I gave them 2 stars because they put carafes of water on the table the water is good they got that right. Very disappointing. I live less than a block away and today was the second time I called to place a take out order. After being placed on hold for 10 minutes the call was cut off(not sure if I was hung up on or if there is a issue with the phone) attempted to call back and line now goes direct to voicemail. This is exactly what happened the first time I tried to place a take out order the last time. I tried to call back 4 times over the course of 40 minutes. All calls went straight to voicemail. Solid Mexican fare. I'm pretty picky about Mexican food and Que Rico's offering is good, but not the best out there. I find their chips to be a little thick/hard and not salty enough, but the margaritas are good and the food generally is, too. I've had enchiladas and the fajitas and found both to be spot-on. Again, not the best I've ever had but also not Chevy's-quality. I went in on a Friday night and was able to get a table right away--no wait--after being told it would be 45 min. at least at El Tapatio. Love going out for Mexican...fun drinks, free chips and salsa, and an all-around fun atmosphere. However, Que Rico falls short in many areas and I am pretty sure I will not go back again. We had reservations and there were plenty of empty tables, yet we still had to wait for about 15 min. to get our table. Then, it took about 10 minutes to place our order and another 10 min to get our drinks. Stale chips...how hard is it to heat them up to make them a bit better?! The steak in the burrito did not taste like steak and the burrito. The only redeeming factor was the Queso Fundido and that the margaritas were good. read more

While the restaurant itself is very charming - both inside and out, the food we ordered was very bland - not at all what you'd expect from a restaurant serving anything approaching 'authentic mexican cuisine.' My husband's entree had no detectable seasoning whatsoever... not even salt (as far as we could tell) - and mine was just ordinary at best. This was the worst customer service I have ever received at a restaurant. 5 friends and I went one afternoon and had to basically beg our server to bring us chips, take our drink orders, and waited around over an hour to get a meal that was nothing to write home about. Que Rico is one of the best Mexican restaurants in Chicago that I have found. Their chips and salsa are ridiculously good, the bistec tacos are to die for, and the margaritas are an absolute must have! We stumbled upon this place one Sunday because they have half off margaritas and $5 bloody marrys and mimosas, can't beat that! I gave four stars because I was never really impressed with the service. We would frequent que Rico at least once a week. We always had the same 2 servers, sat in the same spot, and tipped well, in yet every time we walked in they never greeted us with a warm "welcome back" welcome if you know what I mean. And they would let our chips and salsa bowl sit empty for long periods of time, we would have to keep waving down our waiter. But all in all, great food and drinks. read more

It had been a long long day...we had just completed a road trip from WI to Chicago and naturally were starving when we got back. We thought we would try a new mexican restaurant in the hood called Que Rico! Here is the review: Prompt water and chip/salsa service. The chips were not the best ever, but were relatively thick and had a nice crunch. Salsa was delish! The chips were replenished in a very timely manner. We sat outside in the cool Chi-town breeze. The Margaritas had been raved the "best in the city". We give them a second best and thought they were very drinkable. The food came out very quickly and in huge portions. We ordered the Enchilada Mole with Chicken, the chicken tostadas and the quesadilla special. All was very tasty or... Que Rico! We all left feeling very full and satisfied. The meal was a little pricy but the ambiance was nice. Now a word about the down side: This pesky bug flew into my face half way through the meal. It landed on my eye. Then it flew onto my nose, I flapped it away, but it landed in my food. But c'est la vie. Overall we would go back for another nice meal! read more

The service is awful and the food is over priced and nothing special AT BEST. Oh, did I mention that the expensive margaritas are watered down? I asked for my 2nd one to have a bit more Tequila so I could maybe at least taste it. For $9 I don't need a sweet slushy. Well, I got the same thing. The waiter said that the alcohol kindof disappears once its blended. No joke!! If you want to eat good Mexican food, avoid this joint! The ambiance is decent but it is quite deceitful. Even my kids, who eat anything, had bad things to say about their cheese quesadillas and chicken strips. I let the owner's daughter, Patricia, know about my experience and she could have cared less.
