We're married now, and just went back to London with my side of the family, a party of 11 including three small kids. I was in charge of booking restaurants for a few massive dinners, and I decided we would all try the iconic St. John. This involved contacting the restaurant over a month in advance and going back and forth with events manager Thea Elder, exchanging over 20 emails about menus, children, signatures, etc. She was great, always prompt and helpful. With our party size, we had to pre-order the feasting menu, which was £100 per adult, and no charge for the children. It included two starters, two mains, and two desserts, served family style, which I selected with her guidance. I also added some extras, a starter and a few sides. Unnecessary, but I have no regrets. After all that, I had a sick kid the day of our reservation, and St. Grandma ended up staying back at the hotel with both of my sons. I let the restaurant know, but it didn't really matter. I understood we were on the hook for a dinner for eight, and to be honest, my mom wouldn't have eaten her share anyway. The restaurant was instantly likable, a casual, vibrant place with the easy air of a beloved institution. Service was professional and friendly. We didn't need much, as everything was pre-set. We weren't even shown the daily menu, and weren't given the option to order anything a la carte (I wouldn't have minded adding a thing or two that not everyone would have wanted, but Thea had told me this might not be possible, and we already had too much food). We did get an XL bottle of red wine to go with our XL dinner, as well as two other red bottles. Good wine at decent prices, especially for a Michelin-starred joint. The food was outstanding. I'd heard from multiple people that St. John was British cooking at its best, and that was certainly my experience. Everything was delicious, and unlike anything I ever see where we live, in California. The presentation was homey but nice, the platters intimidatingly large. Dinner started with the house brown bread and butter, fantastic, and langoustines with mayonnaise, one of my additions to the feasting menu. These were sweet, plump langoustines in their shells, served with mayonnaise and lemon. For our starters, I went with the roast bone marrow and parsley salad and the poached salt fish, samphire, and potato. The bone marrow is famous, a St. John signature, on the menu continuously since 1994. It's the direct ancestor of all the bone marrow dishes in upscale restaurants across the world, and also an approachable example of Fergus Henderson's nose-to-tail cooking. It was delicious and fun to eat, the rich gloopy marrow served in open bones with bread to spread it on, coarse salt and bright parsley salad to put on top. The salt fish was equally excellent, sort of a big salad with delicate cold fish and creamy potatoes with samphire, a salty seaweedy plant I'd never had before. I loved this dish. I ordered the roast beef and crispy pig's cheek for our mains, figuring the roast beef would be safe and the pig's cheek adventurous in the St. John spirit. The roast beef was lovely, tender and flavorful, served with horseradish, greens, and trenchers, bread to soak up all the juices. The crispy pig's cheek was great, meaty and gelatinous, tossed with green beans, roast shallot, and a dressing to bind it all together. There were enough vegetables in the mix that we probably didn't need our extra order of green salad, but it was nice. Likewise the potatoes. The Welsh rarebit, on the other hand, was definitely additive. A fat slab of golden toast smothered in a delectable hot cheese sauce. Desserts were splendid. Moist, spicy ginger loaf came in sticky butterscotch sauce. On the lighter end, a lush berry mousse with thick cream and sweet raspberries and strawberries. Both top tier desserts, as notable as the meats. This was a wonderful dinner, truly a memorable family feast. I hope to come back to St. John whenever I'm able to visit London. Maybe next time, I'll try a little more nose and tail.

A real food nerd's destination and an open mind is needed to be able to order and experience the offal and off cuts that reclaim some English, classic dishes. It's important to do a little research because the dishes served are not things often seen on menus, especially American menus. The bone marrow and welsh rarebit are classics and a must. The crab on toast is another menu mainstay; the whole brown crab is the alternative for those willing to put more work in. The green sauce is also ever present with the a daily fish. Our table went offal with the gizzard salad (wow, so tender and the dressing had good zing), rissole (mince meat croquet that packed intense meat flavor), roasted heart special (the cut was packed with umami and had a nice balance of toothsome and tenderness), and the cockles bacon and samphire (wonderfully smoke from the bacon and grass and salt in the sea beans). Service was pleasant and straightforward, but it was the food that really shined for us. A wonderful meal with the madelines being a nice finishing touch.

Started with the butternut squash soup, which was rich and yummy, but somewhat expected. Then had the trout which was nice with a crispy skin, but a bit underseasoned. Chips were exceptional as advertised, but didn't need the extra truffle bit and cocktails were unexceptional. Service also was a bit flat so not I don't think up to the standard.

Cooked to perfection with a nice background of heat from the mustard. My wife had halibut. Again it was cooked to perfection. Her dish had a nice creamy tarragon sauce and green tomatoes, which were both delicious. Get the chips! These were the best chips I had in London!! They're huge! Such a wonderful crisp on the outside with a soft, warm center. And there was a nice touch of rosemary. Can't go wrong with the brownie for dessert - it wasn't too sweet, which I appreciated. A relief compared to the zoning laws I'm used to. The food was delicious too. I've never had food in a pub that was so good. They managed to nail all the dishes: The meat, fish, and the dessert. The high ball I ordered to wash it down was amazing too. Our waitress was extremely professional as well. Even when the restaurant started getting crowded at around 8pm. I'd say the Harwood Arms is probably one of the better Michelin Star restaurants I've had the privilege of dining at.

Tucked away in a quaint Fulham side street, the Harewood Arms has long since had a reputation for culinary excellence. So much so I'm not sure you can really call it a pub any more, that would be cheating. It's also the only 'pub' to have a Michelin star. Here's why. The Sunday Lunch here is off the scale excellent. They have managed to take all the things that make a Sunday roast a Sunday roast - the ridiculous excess, the gratifying satiation, the full on madness of the spread - and add enough fitness to make something truly memorable. Opulence abounds. Peacock feathers for chandeliers, massive gilded mirrors, the smells and sounds only proper wood panelling can give you, high corniced ceilings, space in abundance, a few stuffed animals in the mix, a sweeping bar. Victorian exuberance in every corner. The welcome is warm. The table is intimate. The food is proper. A thick paper menu adorned with curly writing tells us we're not leaving good old Blighty today. Completely unnecessary starters are ordered. Venison Scotch Egg from the 'snack' section. Grilled Scallop from the starters list. The Scotched Egg is moist and meaty with a real crunch to the crust. It comes with a punchy chutney and it's a delight but, to warn you, it's not a snack. 'Hearty' would be the word except I'm sure the heart might complain at being overruled by the eyes and belly. Scallops is pretty as a picture, presented in the shell and adorned with cucumber, shish and seaweed. We had already ordered soda bread and whipped butter and already we were wondering if we should order a crane winch to get us out of the place. Two thick slabs of nutty soda bread with butter a lot lighter than the feathers surrounding us. The roast itself is presented on a large board which groans under the abundance of its contents. It's a sight. Huge Yorkshires are delved straight into and the surprise comes when you meet the beef ragu encased inside. Luxury and decadence in abundance. We ordered the Cote De Boeuf (about the only thing that deviates from the Britishness) and it comes sliced into large chunks so you get the burnished black crust and the velvet red inside. Broccoli makes a pretty bedding plant on the board. The all important roasties have the all important crust and fluff within. We picked away but not before making sure staff were happy to give us a doggy bag. Once that was confirmed we were able to relax somewhat. The idea that any of this would go to waste is enough to induce a panic attack. Given that this is a place to hunker down, the wine menu is great, offering plenty of interesting choice and something for most pockets. Prices are no more than you'd expect - which is to say, it's not cheap - a meal and an experience worth every penny. Booking months in advance is essential if you want Sunday Lunch. Wandering in after a good Sunday walk on the off chance will end in disappointment. This is not a pub. It's a celebration of the heights the great British Sunday Roast can reach.

I had the sea bass, and my husband had the trout. So good that I picked that sea bass apart all the way to the bone, which is saying a lot given that it was a very meaty, generous portion already. I wish we could've actually tried some dessert because others around us looked very happy, but we were so full it didn't make sense. If you like fish, go out of your way and stop here! My friend also ordered the French onion, but she got an earl gray tea, spinach and goat cheese tart, and sticky toffee cake. All of the food was delicious. The portions were very generous - especially for the entrees. I wish we could have carried out the rest of leftovers, but our hotel didn't have a fridge. Lastly, the dessert was delicious. My favorite part was the toffee surrounding the cake, which was a bit dense for my liking. Regardless, I thoroughly enjoyed my meal. SERVICE: Our servers were strllar, though I wish I could remember their names, which weren't on the receipt. Great job being attentive and helpful in being knowledgeable about their menu. I don't think I'll be able to find another scotch egg like that one. For my main, I got the fowl with mustard sauce and white beans. Savory and just SO good. Every bite. Delicious. Great meal. Pricey, but it's to be expected. Quite, quite good.

These upmarket businesses may change with the fashions. But the Guinea pub will be there long after the apocalypse has put paid to life as we know it. Mad Max himself after a hard day scavenging for petrol and water and hunting down demented fugitives is assured a roast of the finest quality in surroundings that haven't changed in any meaningful way since the first pub opened in 1473 should he hitch his motorbike up at The Guinea Mayfair. Wood panels, oil paintings of varying quality, brass fittings and staff who know what they're doing. There's a formality about it which is charming rather than offputting. Unreservedly English and making no apology. Arrive 15 mins early and have a pint in the bar. Pretend you're in a Dickens novel. When it's time to dine you'll be led through to the back restaurant and, in case you're wondering about the menu, past a refrigerated display cabinet groaning with choice cuts of prime uncooked beef. Yeah, it's not really 'what do I fancy?', more 'what type of meat sweat do I want at the end of my meal?" There are three separate dining areas because you can't really gut a building like this, take out all the walls and install a shiny concrete floor. All are big enough to impart a good atmosphere and small enough to feel intimate. It's Sunday. We've all come for the roast. But an aperitif of well shucked oysters gets the palate going. As does a well flavoured devilled crab tart with a good, short pastry case. Robust flavour but carefully done. Bread is offered beforehand and served betwixt silver spoon and fork by our young, well trained waitress. Guinness bread is a fluffy and chewy delight. Sodabread retains some moisture which makes it highly enjoyable especially when plastered with butter that sits on the table on arrival waiting for someone to peel off the greaseproof paper that adorns the top. Satisfying. Salt and pepper comes in weighty silver dispensers. It all adds to the experience and anticipation. It's reassuring to be asked how we want our roasts. I ask for medium rare and what is produced is a thick slice of perfectly medium rare beef from the rib. Burnished on the outside, pink and fleshy towards the middle. Prime quality, no chew. Accompanying the beef are excellent roasted parsnips and carrots which have had much of the moisture baked out leaving real sweetness. Chopped cabbage for health. The roast potatoes are the only slight disappointment. As with just about every other roast lunch place apart from The Anglesea (Hammersmith), they lack a crisp crunch and a fluffy inard. But the jug of gravy, thin enough to be real and flavourful, turns them into an agreeable mash of sorts. Mustards from France, Germany and England are served on a platter along with good homemade horseradish. You can order extra sides. Kidneys, haggis, black pudding, you get the picture here. They saw me coming. The haggis is a success with all who try it. Wonderful texture and punchy peppery flavour. Eton Mess is unnecessary and eaten out of greed but enjoyed. The wine menu is a real treat. Page after page of top quality bottles from all the places you'd hope. Not really somewhere to discover something new from Azerbaijan. Tried and tested absolute bangers from Burgundy to Bordeaux and beyond. Five times as many reds as there are whites because, did I mention, this is a meat restaurant. They've been serving this up for years. They know what they are doing. And they aren't going to deviate. Don't go veggie during the apocalypse Mr Max, you'll regret it.
